Through the fields of St Etienne Amidst the corn 🌽 I wonder In my hand 🤚 an ear 👂 of corn 🌽 The morning dew has kissed Here beneath the skies 🌌 I lay with my lover While the summer winds gathered clouds ☁️ of war Au revoir my love 😍 Though the reasons pass me Why we can’t remain in the fields of St Etienne Weaving proudly, singing 🎤 loudly Being young and foolish He was going never knowing He would not return Singing 🎤 songs of war Filled with God & country Marching down the road with the boys that day Au revoir my love 😍 Though the reasons pass me Why we can’t remain in the fields of St Etienne (Repeat) La la la la...
Whole generation of youth marched away to the total annihilation and masacre of world War 1 and this song is about that war. But people forgot about this and started another war, WW2 and this is the song of antiwar, foolishness of youth and meaningless of love.
Lovely song from Mary. Her sweet voice singing about war and death against a background of Vincent Van Gogh's masterpieces makes it very poignant. Thanks for posting.
I heard this or perhaps another singer on this same song during my youth in the 80's. I never understood what this song was all about, what war it was referring to, but I love listening to this song again and again.
Totally unfamiliar with this song and this rendition until a month ago, and it has become one of my favorite MH songs. It's beautiful! Different from the Postcard album track this version shines with minimal accompaniment - where can I find this version - album or CD?
51pogo The Post Card version was a bonus track. Call it a "first try" that ultimately was scrapped - with good reason. This is the "official" version, alas, just a B-side.
Great piece of editing there. When I play this on repeat on VLC the transition from end to beginning is perfect, doesn't miss a beat. Thank you! Have always loved this song and only found out about the movie connection when I came here.
