Awesome! Gorgeous fish! A species I haven’t yet caught on the fly down there. My dad and I caught over 20 species on one trip. Amazing all the different fish down there that will eat sardina patterns. Like a narrow’ish spool Abel you used? 4N or 4.5N?
Yes. These snapper show up in massive red schools. Pretty cool to see. It’s hard to hook them as they have very hard mouths and they’re notorious for swimming straight at you without turning when they eat your fly. The reel is my Abel super 11
Currently in Oregon (we have a vacation home in Waldport, we live in San Diego) I love fishing smallies on the Umpqua - particularly at Big K ranch and other pullouts along the Umpqua. I've done really well on John Day and at the junction of John Day and Columbia. Looks like you're fishing somewhere on the Willamette - that's a river I need to spend more time on. Great clip - I love fishing smallies in Oregon.
Pargo on fly? RADICAL. I fish Southern Baja 3 to 4 times a year - first time I've seen large pargo taken on a fly. We've picked up many pargo amarillo but only about 1/4 the size of those (look like cubera or maybe mullet pargo) you got into. I've been in mangroves were there are some that size in 2' of water during the spawn but have only hooked one once... and it bent out the hook. Very cool clip.
Thanks for you comment! These were red snapper. In Mexico known as Huachinango. We were casting to schools of them the size of a basketball court! Very hard to get a hook into. They love to overtake the fly coming straight at you. Combined with having a very hard mouth, they’re tricky to get hooked. We also got into some cuberra snapper. Very tasty!

Oh it’s possible. And I thought about it early on. I know where these fish are in the spring and fall in 2-10’ of water. But now that I’ve caught several hundred sturgeon I know it would be suicide on a fly rod. Unless it was fiberglass. The way these fish behave at the boat would snap a rod like a toothpick

Wow man. I don’t think anyone would turn that down! At the moment I’m just finding combining pics and video clips into a film strip is the best way to preserve the memories and share the excitement
Yeah man, stripping line for days! What kind/size of fish were you battling there man? Strong af!! I’ve never hooked a wild fish of this size and strength on fly gear outside of pinks, which are also super fun on light gear.
