So i have to pass this riding section before i can even get a learners permit?

What scam the school's have in WA state. The stata WA no longer administer the test. You now have to a pay a private school 50 bucks to take the written permit test, then 60 bucks to take the riden test to get you permit, and if you fail either one you have to pay agan. How are you supposed to learn enough to pass the riden test, oh take there 250 buck class. Then you have to take another 50 dollar written test and another 60 dollar riden test to get your endorsement. What a fucking scam 220 dollars to get your endorsement. And an experienced rider from out if state that has a endorsement from that state still needs to take all 4 test. I hope you that run these school's are happy knowing you are ripping people off with the help of WA. You all a bench of thieves.

Take the class where they teach you to ride. Then on day two of that class you do skills and written test. Finished. I did mine through WMST. Then you do the endorsement testing, which from all the information I can gather actually sounds easier than the permit testing but I think you need your own insured bike for it.

In WA state, you first pass the written exam, then you get a learners permit for passing that exam, you can then legally practice similar to a learners permit with a regular licence.

You can complete all of the testing before 6 months to earn your permanent endorsement. Your temporary permit just expires in 180 days (6 months) meaning you have that much time to take all of the tests.

I will always lane split idc what cagers say. If you care about biker safety, let them lane split. On hot days, sitting in traffic under the hot sun PLUS the heat coming from the engine you are sitting on top of (which is also overheating due to no air flow) puts riders at high risk of dehydration which causes fatigue, brain fog, decrease in awareness, and even loss of consciousness. Even when the temperature is 50-60 degrees, you can start overheating because of all the gear you wear. When a motorcycle has to sit in stop and go traffic, it also puts a ton of wear and tear on the gearing, brake pads, clutch, and the riders wrists and muscles because they are manual transmissions. If the rider's wrists are hurting from all of the clutch manipulation, they have less precise control over the vehicle. Most importantly, cagers should be thanking motorcyclists as lane splitting frees up space for cars and trucks to occupy. We are not slowing you down in any way, trust me, we can often go 0-60 in 2-3 seconds. All of the pushback against lane splitting has nothing to do with rider safety and everything to do with people not wanting motorcyclists to "cut" in the imaginary line. The road is not a line at starbucks and there is no order in which you must wait for the person in front of you to get to their destination before you can get to yours. Many of the people acting like they are against lane splitting because they care about biker safety are the same people that say things like "I cant wait to see you dead on the side of the road". Has nothing to do with people caring about safety and everything to do with emotions and ego.

If my bars will fit, so too will my panniers. I experience about as many problems with aggressive drivers against my splitting a lane (i.e., moving toward the line to interupt my pass), here in CA, as I do when I drive my car in general. If it's actually safer, I don't know, but it is a nice escape from those drivers with the selfsame attitude intent on marginalizing, injuring, or manslaughter of a rider, namely me. As I drive closer to the city center in my region, this defensive riding becomes a much more apparent reality. Our carpool lanes, however, have not seemed to make things better for commuters down here, and now we are just taxing drivers for special lanes through "passes," so with that I'm not much into the congestion issue or city planning as such may just lead to higher taxes so to speak, my opinion. As for "learning how to do this," I would say lane splitting is intuitive and there is no learning curve. The crashing rider exemplified in the video here was simply a dangerous rider anyway: should attend safety classes...and read "Smooth Riding," by Jim Ford :)

In California the law explicitly says it's illegal to split lanes going more than 10 mph faster than the flow of traffic. Your video makes it very clear why this is the case. I don't split lanes because I'm a coward, but I'm well aware that I'm in more danger being between cars. Not a day goes by when I don't see rear end collisions on the freeway. Occasionally there are motorcycles involved and it goes from tow trucks to paramedics very quickly. The Berkeley study is very good.

It’s not self recovery if you can’t do it by yourself. You typically need one person on the rope, and one holding/walking the bike. The Chris Birch method of using your rear hub to wind up the 8mm rope is much better as it makes your engine a high power winch, and one person can do it by themself. Of course, pretend adventurers with shaft drives can’t use this method.

I totally and absolutely agree with lane splitting in washington state. We have way to much traffic here and its 90% safer than sitting behind people breathing in all the toxins and chemicals from the brakes, exhaust, peoples cigar/cigarette smoke, ALL weather not to mention they/we are covered in gear which can cause health risks and let's not forget the RISK OF BEING CRUSHED BY SOME DUMBA** who isn't pain attention because they are on there phone or eating or whatever the hell people think they have the luxury of doing while safely enclosed in their "cage of stupidity”........ and so there are definitely a lot of reasons why this should be legal. NOT ASKING FOR CALIFORNIA LANESPLITTING SPEEDS, JUST 5-10MPH OVER CURRENT TRAFFIC FLOW SPEED........DO SOMETHIN!!!!!!!!!!FIX IT.

6/4/18 lane splitting 2018 bad or good in the beginning it would be bad because drivers are not going to be aware of when this law passes for lane splitting so expect more accidents if this load does pass for lane splitting then I think the government or safety department for Washington should put it on TV for about 1 or 2 years about any new motorcycle laws that has to do with the roadway in cars should make a commercial about Lane spinning and it's legal to inform the public about the new law until more people are aware of this law if it past you will have accidents on lane splitting so it is up to the government and the government's responsibility to make sure the public and the general public and all public are aware of motorcycle new laws until then lane splitting or any other new motorcycle law is bad until the full general public is aware of it and the only way to do that is to put it on TV and radio thank you.

NO lane splitting in Washington state at all, even though the motorcycle riders think they should be lane splitting in Washington they are wrong because motorcycles or small and hard to see, M people that drive vehicles when they are driving on the road or Highway are not going to look in the middle of the road or Highway between those lines on the road that you look from side to side either way on the highway or streets motorcycles are hard to see so no on lane splitting in Washington motorcycles are just too small to see, and if you pass lane splitting in Washington State more people on motorcycle will die because they are hard to see between traffic.

The Berkely study that so many commentors love to recite is misleading. It is comparing apples and oranges. Additionally, the Washington State Patrol strongly opposed this proposal for safety reasons. Riding motorcycles has its own risks. Lane splitting is no different. I guess we just need to decide what our limits are.

Lane splitting is legal in California where more traffic prevails. A recent motorcyclist lost his life in Tacoma for obeying the law. He is dead right because of it. Splitting lanes would have likely saved his life. Think of it: No rear-ends or being struck from behind by inattentive motorists. Getting out front of traffic at red lights. More people would ride lessening traffic. Frankly, it is as if this law was promoted by those who have never ridden.

city lane splitting is essential to reduce congestion and be more environmentally friendly. should be 35mph or less. i did it in san francisco for a decade...no problems. as always, riding a motorbike means you have to be more aware of the idiots driving cars than they will be of you....no change there whether you lane split or not :-) idiots in cars will always cause accidents - don't blame lane splitting for those idiots. most city car drivers can learn to accommodate lane splitting motor cyclists.

As a learning rider and a citizen I think we should allow this. I understand where the opponents are coming from when they state their reasoning but to be honest their argument that it is more dangerous is only slightly valid. While they are right it could be dangerous at the begining when not everyone would know about the law, bikers aren't forced to do it. We wouldn't have to unless we wanted to. It's similar to saying riding a motorcycle is wrong because it is more dangerous than a car. While it is true it is a conscious decision we make.

This video needs to be updated to reflect the findings of the Berkeley study, and change in position of the California Highway Patrol, which shows that filtering not just likely safer, it IS safer. I have been riding into London, and through the worst of London's traffic and road engineering on a daily basis for 22 years before I immigrated to Seattle. In the four years after, I have suffered two collisions both from the rear in congestion and hospitalised on the latter because of being in the queue rather than between lanes in the queue where I would much rather prefer to be. Between lanes I am protected by stationary, or nearly stationary cars that can muster little to harm me, even if they wanted. It is utter madness that some numpty texting away in their Subaru during congestion can kill me because I am legally compelled to be in the least-safe place for a motorcyclist to be. Since the second the second collision, I have filtered where and when I deem it the safest place to be riding as the traffic offence point and fine are less of an inconvenience than being maimed or killed. The States are self-stroking idiots for not having sought conformity with the best practices of the rest of the modern world, even the Ozzies have legalised it in NSW.
