U seem to take great care of him but I think the tank should be bigger. I know it could be expensive but if u only have one then I think they need more enrichment.
I really like your above tank setup, I did something similar but with mostly wood and a little plastic window. I have a 90 gallon tank, I removed all the small rocks and left in a big Rock and a hidey hole that is used for above ground enclosures but works good for my turtle when he wants to hide. My red ear slider Flash is about Chunks age as well but he is only like 7-8 inches.
Wow, sounds like a nice set up for Flash. This is a good idea to consider for Chunks to have a small bit of variety in her environment. Thanks for sharing 🐢🐢
Chunks is very cute and I enjoyed your video😍 My red eared slider is 15 and I've had her since she was a hatchling. She acted gravid and laid eggs for the first time ever last year. Has Chunks ever laid eggs? Do you have separate space you use for that? Mine hated every nesting box I created for her (I made 4 different ones, including one attached to her tank) regardless of media. She did dig holes in the sand one I made but no eggs. She ended laying in the water. Next year, I plan to take her out in the yard when she acts gravid and see if that works for her.
Wow, interesting to hear about your turtle! Chunks has never laid eggs, but this is great information to consider for having a separate location for her. I am curious if bringing your turtle outside would be effective! 🐢 Thank you for sharing!
Don’t know if you know but you shouldn’t have your turtle in sink water and if you do you need to put water conditioner for the turtles because it burns them recently found out and my turtles are a lot happier now your welcome you should also get a bigger tank for them and also make sure she has both uv and uvb
I’ve recently found myself the owner of a turtle, mine is a 15 year old female Mississippi map who’s about 5” shell size. Saw this video in my RU-vid rabbit-hole of turtle related content. It’s heart warming to see what good care you take of your turtle and I’m picking up some tips for sure from the feeding routine you have - I already feed in a separate container but I might start using the bath. Investigating that food as well 😄 I would definitely echo what I can see others have said though - I would expect you to have a waaaaaay bigger tank than that - I just got an 80 gallon tank upgrade for my turt and she’s about half the size of yours. Would be cool if there was some more stuff in the tank as well - my tank is currently very simple / bare / clean like yours but I’m adding some black diamond blasting sand, decorations, drift wood and maybe a turtle brush as well as maybe an air pump and some other bits over the next month or two - I might make a video when my turtle’s new tank is setup and it would be cool to see any updates to yours so I’ll subscribe to keep updated - and to see some more turtle tips 🐢😄
Wow, thank you for your supportive reply. This is good to consider tank size and other accessories for Chunks! 🐢🐢🐢 Good luck on your turtle friend journey, they are majestic creatures!
I really LOVE readsliders, but i am very hesitant to get one again, since they are one of the biggest ones, as you surely know. Was thinking about a musk turtle, since they are one of, or even the smallest and don't need as much space. As Chrisg2419 already said, the tank is prolly a bit boring and small for the tourtle, even though it's most likely the cleanest option, and as we prolly all know, sliders will produce a lot of waste! Keep the good work up, i am not sure how many even bring the turtle to a live span of 22 years, i hope many, but well there are surely a lot of bad animal keepers out there! I wish you and chnuks all the best!
You seem to really care for her. They are a lot of work and people don't understand that before getting one. If you can i would get a larger tank. Ideally it should be 10 gallons for every one inch of shell length. So if her shell is 10 inches long she should have a 100 gallon long tank not tall. Then add some turtle approved decorations. Also a uva/uvb light. Again I still think you're doing an amazing job with her, but she's probably looking for an upgrade.
