Ernest movies are underrated. Yes, they are low budget, but it didn't matter. Jim turned these films into classics that'll never be forgotten. Jim Varney didn't get the credit that he should have in regards to how great his comedic style was. The movies are "dumb," but that's what they are supposed to be. If the script is written and shot well, that's pretty much all you need in order to create a decent slapstick comedy film. Slapstick comedy is a film subgenre that's slowly fading away. My buddy and I are trying to revive it by creating films that are inspired by classics such as Naked Gun, Airplane, Hot Shots, Mel Brook's films, and Monty Python. They took the world by storm when they were released, but once the 2000s came around, they slowly started to die out. The Scary Movie Franchise was basically the last of the major slapstick comedy flicks that were ever made.
One of the brilliant touches of this movie is that the guards’ uniforms are just matter of factly pink. 🤣 Also gotta love how Ernest commits so thoroughly that he gripes to himself in character, knowing nobody can hear him.
When I first watched this, I wondered why the officers wore pink in this movie lol. As a criminal Justice major I had hoped a department actually wore those colors
Crazy how acceptable this movie was to watch as a kid. I'm pretty sure this one would give lots of kids nightmares now. Just a reminder of the differences in generations.
From 1:15-1:16, how was Ernest able to carry that ball and chain inside his disguise since I'm sure it's very heavy? That one police officer who put it on him said "that ought to hold you" but it's weird it didn't hold him in place as he was wearing his disguise.
