I'm like sooo WoW'd at all the diff't regions of the world who was taught this or a variation similar to this memorable dance. My hubby & I also did it during gym in our school days 10 yrs apart & in diff't cities (same state tho) Thank you Posted Aug 27.2024 I was telling him about this little boy who always had sweaty hands .... Gross!! We used to tease my sister His name is Donnie & Her name is Marie Sitting in a tree K. i. s. s. i. n. g. First comes love Then comes marriage Here comes Marie w/ a baby carriage 🎵 Poor Donnie was a little boy in a man's body... He was huge, awkward, obese, & talked funny. I wasn't friendly towards him b/c I didn't want him to think I liked him... but I did feel bad that he had to go thru life looking like that.
This is the best Virginia Reel video I have been able to find for teaching. And the music is the best also. I will I could find the music somewhere without having to have the youtube video on. Is that possible?
The reason for my previous comment about the men and women on the wrong side is this. In most Continental and American dances the man is to the left of the woman, or coversely, the woman is on the right of the man. If you face the top of the set (which one does in some contra dances), the men's line will then be on the left side of the set, the women on the right side - just opposite from what is shown in this video. "Peel the banana" is very descriptive in modern society, but in the old days when this dance was first developed, the term used was "strip the willow". Also descriptive, but not something most modern folks would relate to.
Now you all join hands and you circle the ring You stop where you are and give your honey swing You swing that little gal behind you You swing your own as you go out to meet her Then alemande left with that corner gal And do-si-do your own Then you all promenade with that sweet corner maid Singing Oh Johnny Oh Johnny Oh
I learned this on grade school many years ago. About 10 years ago, my mother was in a nursing home and I joined her for lunch. We were seated man, woman, man, woman, around the table. O Johnny O popped into my head and I began singing. How fun it would have been to do O Johnny O there, even if some were in wheelchairs.
I try to click on dance instructions - but it won’t open anything. Can you repost? Thank you! Oops sorry - meant to ask for the dance instructions for O Susannah!
I love this!!! What is the title of the music you are using? It’s a little more relaxed than some of the reel music, which works well for my younger students…please let me know and thank you so much!!!!!!!
These are the lyrics I learned in Canada when I was a kid: All join hands and circle the ring, Stop where you are, give your partner a swing, Swing that left-hand girl, Then your own when you get home, Alaman left with that sweet corner girl, Do-si-do your own, Then you all promenade with that sweet corner maid, Singing “O Johnny O Johnny O”! It was a little simpler than the one above, but I’m sure it’s just one of many versions out there!
