Most if not all vintage high end audio till the mid 2000's were Philips technology based! Philips also has made absolute high en components like CD players pre and power amps tuners reel to reel and TV's house hold apliances defence, Medical,Video streamers PC's laptops etc cassettedecks under it's own brand name. Just facts! Philips was THE TECH innovator, although it's main market segment under it's own brand name Philips target, was indeed entry level and higher priced midlevel consumer audio market most and foremost, that is correct! Bigger corporation in the surpassed General Motors even. With factories in more then 79 countries word wide. Radio and TV etc for the masses! Note: The CD850 had a white hiss background issue on analog out only, caused by a bad design of the analog pre amp line out of the player. Solved with 850 MKII which Philips replaced for free your CD850 (MKI) with if purchased new and being first buyer owner!
hey mate, any idea if this mechanism works on the OPPO 105AU? My disc tray is jammed and wont open or close. Would you do a service? I am from Tasmania
For a jammed one you probably don't need new mechanism but only belt replacement. Yes, I could do a service if you can't find anyone local. Shipping to and from Tassie is expensive
Some years ago I've done two CD-80 in quick succession. One wouldn't work at all till re-capped but other still worked OK, even though capacitors were just as bad.
I have an old but fresh Marantz 63se, it gets out like 5mm but then gets stuck and when u help it a bit it can slowly get out. I cleaned the tray and slides. On the way back it goes in perfectly but again the last cm it gets stuck somewhere. Very hard to see even if it’s open but ah, don’t wanna pay like 50-100 for it. I mean belt is okay and wheels too but cant figure out where the problem is and I know it’s just something minor. Any ideas?
Maybe belt is not OK and needs to be changed. Also, clean pulleys with belt off. Once you have the belt off, see if the tray travels in and out effortlessly. Finally, do pulleys spin freely?

Great video. I would argue I'd prefer one of the old (early 90ies) CD players with a Philips CDM transport or Sony BU magnetic transport mechanism. Some of those top-line players were also "overbuilt" but not quite to the extend here where it's mostly the 1cm thick slabs of aluminium / steel responsible for the weight, and not necessarily hyper advanced engineering inside. Especially, considering this is a transport-only. Many old players have digital out, so you can use them with a brand new modern DAC, should you wish to.
Hello, I have an EAD ovation theatermaster, when the switch is ON, the screen displays the model. When it is turned on, the screen turns off and there is a continuous whistling sound, a red LED on the motherboard lights up permanently. The original remote control does not work, I would like to have your opinion before entrusting it to a professional. Thank you very much in advance. Kind regards
Without opening my unit which is sitting on the shelf still gathering dust, it seems that there is a switched mode power supply that is trying to start but can't. This would account for whistling sound. But I am not sure if indeed this unit has any SMPS. Or it could be a display power supply. One way or another, you have to give it to the local wizard.
hi, what is the repairability index of this EAD Ovation preamp? are the parts still available? the hifi repairer where I took it this morning told me that it is a very special device 🤔, what do you think? Thanks
@@juanmickaelrhobinson2556 it is a very special device. It all depends what is wrong with the unit. If fault is in inputs or outputs, there's good chance of getting it repaired. If it is with the smarts, it's much harder.
the problem may be with the remote control sensor, the remote control works but does not communicate with the device. we hear a continuous whistling sound, the red light is permanently on (dvl/err), this is the description of the problem
Not if you are maker if them. Plenty of people dream of having one of these. There's a guy in Melbourne (machinist) who strips them and re-manufactures bearings and spindles. People (some) pay $3k to have it done... What do you call that? He also replaces capacitors in PSU and connects them via forest of wires. See my older video about TL-1 (the red one)
The idiots who pay $70k or even just $8k for this don't understand how CD works, CD has a memory buffer and an error correction scheme, it doesn't matter if belt driven or direct drive using a $5 motor, The speed of the disc has absolutely nothing to do with the music stream, this is not analog Vinyl, The bits are read, error corrected and streamed according to an internal clock not according to the motor speed, Unless you stall the disc by hand the music is not affected by the motor speed variations.
@@hear-net-au Even if they earn $1M an hour it is still a moronic decision and most likely based on ignorance, because usually rich people are more greedy than normal people so they wouldn’t throw away money for nothing in return..
@@hear-net-au So many new DACs even ChFi 400usd ones offer I2S inputs , it would be great to take full advantage of it with a CD transport without spending a fortune
@@kdomster9141 but I2S is not something that makes the sound great. It's merely SPIDIF split into its components. It makes very little difference at short distances and at low frequency of 1.5MHz which data transfer format is being used. Some offer better noise immunity, some higher transfer rate, but for listening to red book CDs in a regular home setup, they're all much the same
Not really. I would have to see it myself. ATM in Australia, we have winter and things are cold, so player with perished belt will not work in the morning, but late afternoon, when the rubber softens, it will play. You need to come up with more detail. Are CDs you try always the same? Ambient temperature? If it does not play, will trying for 15 minutes finally wake it up?
@hear-net-au it works after ive put a few cds in,once it goes its off fine.but the next day or night you have to do it again.may just want a clean or new laser its over 30 years old.Quad are not far from me so may get get a serviced there.they have done the cogs for drawer a few times at £100 a time, tho i think i could do it myself.its just a great cdp!...
@@dalebradley6039 if you can make player work each time, then it's not a laser problem. Most likely one or more capacitors are becoming leaky and have high ESR. Cleaning laser lens with isopropyl alcohol won't hurt, but I bet it's an electrical problem.
@hear-net-au think your right.i can clean the laser but the other iam out of my depth.best left to quad.its never had a laser change i 30 years.the guy at quad said they stopped making them they lasted to long! The new one they wouldnt last as long and there pricey to replace..but imho the quads worth it..
@@dalebradley6039 lasers are normally not an issue in CD players. If things go according to plan, they outlast the mechanics of the player. Sine are only 10% worn after 30 years
Hard to say. Some people are itchy and would modify any piece of gear that comes their way. To really make an informed decision, you'd have to have both modified and standard unit side by side and compare them. I myself wouldn't do it to my unit but if someone were to pay me to do these mods, I would.
Hmmm... they added more capacitors, then put them on the end of a fairly long pair of wires. That would negate any lower ESR that the caps could have provided. The balanced output wiring is also not shielded or twisted?
Mine strugles to read CD. “No disc” message shows up frequently. Where can I find the laser unit to change it? Whats the model for the SA11 S2 model? Thanks!
AES/EBU was also developed for long cable runs , volt drop noise from other cables ( common mode rejection ) etc , maybe a better test would be to see which signal is still usable over a 1KM coax cable. also agree though that aes3 signal looks like a mess though
Omg thats a dream!!! I found someone selling that in greece!! I own an intersaded one eci-2 who can work in a preamp mode also!! What is a good price for this power amplifier?????
@@hear-net-au on the contrary my tech guy told me that even the laser that I replaced was good. Can you give link to servo alignment info? If the transport was not that heavy I would have send it, it's very special audio piece this transport...

Definitely not even close to their best they made tons of es players. Look up a xa50es , the scd777es (60lbs pounds ) just the transport aloke is worth owning
I have the same unit, which I purchased in 1992. It has so many features for its time. Incredible unit. ES = Elevated Standards. I would fixed, which is why I am looking this up. Taking mine into a local repair shop.
@@hear-net-au ithank you for the reply. I know this video is 2 years old hahaha Also where would one get a manual for this? I just picked one up and its amazing. Thank you
I just won one of these. The door opens on its own but won't close, the guy is telling me. The guy pushes it to close! It's in Japan I haven't paid for it yet! I hope it's an easy fix.
Hi, Some of my DVD's are no longer playing on my Azur 650BD. I would like to increase the power to the laser slightly but I cannot find any screws under the laser to this (as is on many other players). Do you know how to do this on the BD650? Your help would be very much appreciated!:)
Wow, that is quite a construction! I was totally unaware of what was going on inside these. Back in the day when these came out it was only the belt drive that was touted as its most significant difference to other cd players. It quite obviously isn't and I have no idea why they did not emphasize more all the over-engineering that exists inside these. I'm sure consumers would have appreciated that. It is very common now to show the inside of a device when it is advertised or reviewed. Back then it was very rare for reviewers to show the insides of the device so if the manufacturer did not do when advertising it, the consumer pretty much bought blindly.
Well, a lot is going on only because a lot of expensive aftermarket mods were done. Normally, it's just this belt drive mech, basic power supply, boom-box servo board and display driver.
The odds of me repairing my own CD player are pretty slim, because my hands shake. Yet, I have watched maybe 50 of your videos, some multiple times. I have learned a lot about the differences between players. I just wish you were local; Wanneroo is a long way from Texas. Looks like a beautiful place. I wanted to suggest an idea for a video. There is a very comprehensive website about Phillips mechanisms, detailing the differences between the various models, which are the best, which to avoid. But there is no equivalent for Sony. Given the large number of models beginning KSS, and the fact that some are out of production and quite pricey (like KSS-151, I believe), it would be great to see a comprehensive survey of the various models, strengths, weaknesses, availability, etc. Something akin to the Phillips site. Think on it. You must surely know more about vintage players than anyone on the planet! I have an Oppo CDP-203, and a Rotel RCD-855 that has been sitting in my spare bedroom since the 1990s. I'd imagine it needs belts and the gear. I haven't tried it, because I wondered if a bad gooey belt in use might complicate repairs. And now, a VDRS-9 is on my way from Audiomart, freshly serviced by Victor Vu in Canada. It should be here Wednesday. I bought it after watching your VDRS videos. While there's a fair bit about the VDRS-7 online, there's very little about the 9. The best interior shots are on a video from Vietnam, but alas, I don't speak Vietnamese and can't understand it. So anyway, the Sony mechanism survey would be great. Either way, keep those videos coming. Thanks.
Thanks for your kind words. I'm merely a fixer of these things. People who brought you the Philips webpage used to work for Philips and have access to all the factory info and museum. I haven't seen that many Sony heads because some are very rare (only yesterday I've seen my first KSS -280A which was ever used in only 2 players) or were never imported to Australia. Maybe in 10 years, as I gather more exposure. ;-)
Fair enough. Frankly, I'm surprised at the sheer number of high end players you work on. Perth is about the same size as Austin, and I doubt there are so many here. Perhaps you are getting them from all over Australia. You get some that are rare here. I've looked at your listings on Aussie Audiomart. Makes me wonder what hear-net-au stands for, though I'll wager "au" is Australia. I'd like to come down there someday. I like how casual it seems to be. Barefoot in stores.... I'd fit in nicely. That VRDS-9 will be here in 2 days. I hope it lives up to my expectations, and is worth the $580 USD shipped that I spent for it as a dedicated transport. I just hope the repairman was as thorough as you are. I would have liked to see the square wave from the S/PDIF output. I figure it will be beat the Cambridges, which seem to have a high failure rate judging from the number of broken units I see for sale.
@@gilko61 HEAR stands for High End Audio Restoration. Perth now has about 2 million people but it's a mining town. Up North of the state are World's biggest iron it's mines that feed China's industry. We have here a lot if other minerals and hence there's a but if wealth and high end systems. True, I do get few players sent to me from Melbourne (but not from Sydney) but I pick interesting units and that is why there is a good variety. Also, videos are from almost a decade.
Scoped the digital out of mine it's very clean, this is not an late model at all 1990. This is full of top grade components and was about £3k in the UK.
It could be some kind of fault in the output board, but since the owner only wanted the tray fixed, I wasn't going to pursue the matter further. Good to hear that it can be as clean as the earlier Sony units. Sony might not be the highest of high end, but they surely do honest and proper engineering
