Bought one two weeks ago. Very disappointed that it did not eject the shells properly or consistently, in fact had to “push out” the spent federal shorty with a cleaning rod. Gun store “fiddled” with it but had to send it back to Savage for repair ( I hope). Anybody else have ejection issues with their 301 12ga.?
Good test, good video! Nice shooting actually. I have the same gun and shoot the Federal low recoil ammo out of it. Very accurate for a smoothbore gun.
Friend you got a nice HW 30 All you need is more practice, it's not a bad idea to clean the barrel when you get it out of the box, thank you for your video.
Thank you! I’ve since put a Hawke Vantage 4x32 AO scope on and my accuracy has much improved. I cleaned the barrel when I first bought the rifle and haven’t had to clean it since 👍
When I purchased my hw 30 from aoa here in az. I was suggested a nikon 3-9x40 a.o. could not be more satisfied. Perfect glass for this bit of kit imho. Unfortunitly no longer available.
Thanks for posting, I liked this video. I would not recommend a .22 HW30s for a beginner. I suspect it would be harder to shoot than a .177 due to the very low MV, but I could be wrong. Overall though the HW30s makes a lot of sense for lots of people!
Thanks for watching! I agree the 177 makes more sense in the HW30S as the 22 version does have a slow velocity. The 22 is just an advantage for someone in Canada as the faster 177 version requires a gun license and the 22 version does not.
It could be good for pests though. And .22 is a fun caliber: m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Bzm1bus_Fpo.html&pp=ygUMaHczMHMgc2t5dHRl
Dont lean so far foward when you shoot & u wont feel it all the way down ur back..curl ur shoulder around it pull it in tight & let-r-rip huge diff. in felt recoil..dont be scared of it & make it your BITCH!!! lol
Yeah… you could absolutely tell that slug was BRUTAL! Not surprised 💥 I’d bet if you shot the shorty slug prior the all the other shoulder abuse I’d be even less uncomfortable. Still gonna punch though. GREAT review 🍻
Question, how do you go about calculating ft lbs of energy? (i.e. how could I do it as well?) And if 22 had to be used for any defense, is ft lbs of energy generally the most important factor?
There are several energy calculators online, just need to input velocity and weight of the bullet. Can’t speak to use for self defence, they don’t let us talk about such things in Canada :P
I haven’t got a scope yet purely out of stubbornness but the more I think about it the more I know I should. I keep looking at maybe a simple 4x scope from Weihrauch or Hawke. Thanks for watching!
@@MigsOnGuns Hey man, I definitely recommend trying a compact scope. A couple of good options for the HW30; Hawke Vantage 2-7x 32mm AO (there is an IR version of this scope also), or Hawke Airmax 2-7x 32mm AO, which is similar but with a finer glass etched reticule. Just make sure whatever scope you get is focus adjustable eg has an Adjustable Objective or Side Focus feature with a distance range which starts suitably close for low power airgun shooting eg ~10m. Scopes which are not focus adjustable are typically fixed at 100yds (the distance which will be 'parallax error free') and are better suited for shooting further out using higher power guns. Also, a graduated type reticule to aid with holdover is quite useful for airguns and good quality mounts prevent unwanted scope movement.
@@Beesa10 I agree, and I’ve decided to get a scope. Currently waiting for the Hawke Vantage 4x32 AO to be back in stock. What rings would you recommend? I’d like rings as low as possible and to have that little recoil pin thingy that fits in the rifle rail.
@@MigsOnGuns I use SportsMatch mounts which are good quality, made in the UK and they have that arrestor pin thingy (the pin can be removed using a punch if required). They make lots of different variants so you need to spec carefully before ordering. The ones I have fitted are two piece, double screw, 11mm dovetail, 1" tube, medium height and the 32mm AO scope clears the cylinder/receiver of the rifle by approximately 5mm which is comfortable and looks about right. They also offer low height mounts also but without careful measuring I'm unsure if they would work.
@@MigsOnGuns I checked the heights of Sportsmatch mounts out of curiosity, their low mounts are 6mm lower than their medium ones so it looks like low height ones would not be suitable. The website suggests a few mm of clearance underneath a scope is desirable to allow fitting of lens caps/dust covers which is a good point. The model number for the medium height mounts is TO4C
@@MigsOnGuns starting at 4:00 minutes. Winchester faster than claimed FPS. One exceeded 1480. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-e3Kj-BFjVHo.htmlsi=7eJ99PQdESn2fR7B
Thanks for watching! If a guy could only have one gun for life that had to do everything this just might be it. Thankfully we’re spoiled for choice these days haha
Hilarious how people complain about a shotgun in 12ga are "uncomfortable" to shoot. Need to gain some weight, use a shoulder pad, practice more, drop gauge size, or..... Dont shoot 1.
410 is hard to come by and expensive. 20 gauge (at least for slugs) has as much or more energy than low recoil and shorty 12 gauge. I have no practical reason to own the 301, it’s just for fun.
HW30 is an excellent, high quality little spring rifle and great for use as a garden gun. It has an 11mm dovetail rail and is worthy of a scope should you wish to fit one. Try a selection of different pellets and with practice you will find it's capable of surprising accuracy, it also has enough power to take small game at short range (although I would recommend something more powerful for a dedicated hunting air rifle). The beauty of the relatively low power and low noise is it's very easy to cock, safe on your ears and you're unlikely to upset neighbors. If you have space, with due care you can even set up a range indoors. For less cost, another good beginner gun is the Daisy 880 multi pump pneumatic.
@@MigsOnGuns Yes, Hawke scopes are decent. I've got an HW30K with Hawke 2-7x 32mm & SportsMatch mounts, also an HW30S which I use the iron sights. I will have to try a Williams peep sight. Cheers
Migs, I'm a long time user of airguns in the UK. Your review is totally refreshing in that it highlights the fun you can have with a quality low-powered air gun. I can see a case for using a more powerful air rifle in a hunting situation, but one of the beauties of lower power is its usability and fun factor for all the family. Many thanks.
Nice video, thanks for the review. I’m getting ready to pull the trigger on a Weihrauch HW30S .177 Deluxe soon. I have several more powerful air guns but I’m wanting to this for plinking. You’ve got a nice rifle there
I think one of the best springpowered rifles, maybe the best. Own a .177 HW30s too and with a (great) no name "high performance" spring from SWS/germany now perfect for my use. If you buy a springrifle for the first time, I would buy a quality rifle like this. Otherwise you get a wrong view about the sport and maybe you will be bored after a short time, because it will not work fine and your results are not so good as they could be. I own a lot of guns, but the HW30 is one of my favorite. I can shoot it nearly everywhere, in between, its lightweight, "führig"(cant say it in english ;-) ) and the record trigger its one of the best on the market I think so. Its not really cheap, but you get a rifle for life. greetings from the birth-country of any Weihrauch :-)
Hey man, me again. I love this gun so much!! Would you dume a big favor and test different loads through a turkey choke? I'm thinking of using whinchester super x triple aught buckshot for deer. I know, prabobaly gonna hurt like the dickons, but noone else has a spasific review on this shotgun with these rounds. P.S: You need more subscribers!!!
Thank you for the suggestion, I hadn’t heard of that ammo. According to Norma’s website, they advertise the Eco Speed’s energy at 160 ft-lbs. And that’s with a 26” barrel so I assume that energy is best case scenario. Definitely one of the heavier hitting 22lr rounds but wouldn’t have been enough to compete in this test.
@MigsOnGuns I like you have tried a lot. Not sure might have a bit better access. As my government is not quite anti as Trudeau seems to be. Though we have plenty that are. You a fan of Eley? This was your first video I saw. So I will have to watch some more to see.
@@yesihavebedbugs2786 Haven’t tried Ely yet, little too expensive for my frugal budget. I did research them though before making the video and I couldn’t find any that would be able to compete with the ones tested here. Thanks for watching!
@MigsOnGuns I sent my rapid fire in. They tested various lots and I bought the lot that tested best. It is not the most powerful. It is consistent, the most consistent ammo I have found. And still cheaper than center fire ammunition is. Though not sure how that would work across borders.
I get all my.22 rimfire ammo from Clearwater cartridge company. Grew up there. 12 years old, 1970, got a rugger 10/22, real American walnut stock. $49.00. Tierney's I.G.A. groceries store was my ammunition place. Mom and Dad had a charge account. Mom would let me go get two boxes of mine mag's, and Mrs Tierney would hand me a clip board with a paper and said 2 boxes .22 cartridge's @ .57c each and I would sign my name. I would Head out the door and start loading up my one and only 10 round magazine and place it in the mag well, carried the rifle in to the store on my shoulder, with a nice leather sling. Walk about two miles down to the canyon and start hunting. Good ole days! Still shoot the 10/22 regularly. Never had an issue with the ammo that comes from Clearwater cartridge company! A.K.A. C.C.I.
