The Institute of Design (ID) at Illinois Tech was founded in Chicago by Bauhaus émigré László Moholy-Nagy in 1937. It has since pioneered human-centered design, systems design, and a methods-based approach to design. Today ID is home to the only US design school devoted completely to graduate students-the first US school to offer the PhD in design. Uniting science and rigor with creativity and rapid iteration, ID focuses on the systems that shape modern life (including cities, education, finance, food, healthcare, and technology) and building new worlds from them, together. Blowing my mind how you've word-ified so much of what I've been feeling/seeing. My goodness! I only just found the term "sociotechnical systems". Gonna have to thank GPT-4('s data transformed from a source of humankind, but of course - sometimes term-finding is all I really need. Terminologists, where art thou? Ontological engineering? Faceted, analytico-synthetic classification(Woo Ranganathan(Boo dewey decimal) lol)[OWL, Protege?)? Okay I'm only 21min in lol back to watching. More terms :0
Loved her book The Grid. Fascinating to learn about electricity’s history, current issues and possible future. Happy to see Gretchen still talking about our future with electricity.
brave statement - it would be nice to see the various projects go somewhere, perhaps a place we who are not so highly educated can go. I work and have worked with many designers but we are not restrained by our tools we dont even need much in the way of communication for our projects to work, just understanding However, perhaps the finished item is not what this is about?
Chris, thank you for a disciplined humanistic discussion about a very difficult subject : institutional racism. None of us think we are racist, but we are inculcated in social, political and economic systems that benefit majority/minority and exclude minority/majority populations from capital, opportunity and advancement. Your ideas and responses show that minority/majority communities can define/regain their own agency, reduce systems and polices informed by racism, and create new futures that could possibly scale to civic systems that help every person reach their potential.
John Gerty, Class of 1973 The environment you are graduating into is perhaps the most challenging one college graduates have ever faced. What you have likely received through the Institute of Design is a mindset informed by curiosity combined with an intellectual resilience and flexibility which will help you to meet the challenges of this weird new world. You are about to find out how quickly fifty years can pass. Congratulations and good luck.
So much love to this graduating class, in particular my foundie students from Product Design. I wish I could have been there with you in Chicago this spring, but what do you know, I had to work a closing shift at the meat department of a grocery store in Florida because that’s my pandemic life now. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
What a pleasure it was to work with Dale on Thinkering Spaces. I think of him and his quiet, steady, inspirational leadership and determination so fondly. My deep condolences to Connie.
This video was excellent. Really gets you thinking about the number of design challenges a psychology graduate student could also begin thinking of. Cheers, please continue posting these design videos it is an excellent resource!
Could the names of all of the speakers be added to the description? Paul is identified by first name only and some of the speakers are not identified at all. Thanks
