As a South African I applaud and think this is a great great song. It brings a tear to my eye for 2 reasons. Firstly - simply because it is emotional in a good way. But secondly... I have obtained a Aussie PR Visa 2 years ago and I am in the painful process of finally deciding whether to do the move. I love my land to bits but the fact is that it is dying and the logical thing to do for my future will be to move across. For me this song partly represents this struggle. Especially the part with ".... I became Australian" and "I am a child of her depression, I saw the good times comes" . For me the word depression means giving up on my homeland but the good times being living in what I know would be a good country as I have visited 3 times - the last time being to activate the PR visa. Even on that trip I had to tick on the plane "Moving permanently". Even though I wasn't moving then by law for the visa I had to do it and was filling it in on my second leg of the trip from South Africa to Singapore at Singapore airport gate to Perth. Couldn't stop crying and thinking of South Africa and the memories. Then the part of becoming Australian. VERY emotional - because whilst I don't think I could myself ever in my heart become Australian I know I will have to assimilate which I can see is easy because I was already kind of on that path on my visits. Luckily our cultures have similarities (but also big differences). I'd be the kind of person to assimilate outside but inside my own house - still practice the traditions of my homeland - South Africa. This song just brings so many emotions - good and bad in me due to the present position I am in BUT - a great song
i am not an Australian, but hearing this song i wish my country USA could take this song as their Song...except for just one important thing, we are so divide in this country..and we have a President who is not only corrupt...but also a divider....i don't care who wins the next election as long as it not a Divider....they like you to believe we all hate each other....but that is not true....we are all Americas....i hope before i fade away into my next life...i will see my country united again.....after all we call ourselves....UNITED STATE OF AMERICA!!!!
Song was written by Bruce Woodley, a member of the Seekers. People say it should be Australia's national anthem, but they say/said the same thing about Waltzing Matilda.
