A charming piece by a charming group! As a student of the late great Joseph Viola co-founder of Berklee College I can really appreciate the stunningly beautiful sound of multiple saxophones playing together. I have always wanted to write for such a group but have never gotten the opportunity. Though I do have some disappointing news for the "contrabass" player. That's actually not a saxophone as that instrument does not taper sufficiently to be called a saxophone. The true contrabass should be precisely double the size of a baritone sax and consequently the bell should be double the diameter of a baritone sax bell as well. I'm not sure what one would call that instrument in the video but it does make a good substitute and seems to blend well. It's also more practical as it is smaller than an actual contrabass making it easier to transport & play.
Excellent potential in this group, but a tendency to sacrifice both intonation and articulation, and with them your otherwise perfect group sound, by rushing through the music, thus throwing both its lyric and its dramatic beauty away. It's not necessary to race Bach in the name of "effect" instead of paying attention to what the composer has to say in his ideas, both lyric and dramatic. Continued Best of Good Fortune in re-tuning up and re-articulating up your group sound and expressivity.
I actually can imagine how hard this thing is to play. After struggling for a couple of years with a sopranino -- a really good one -- I sold it. Fun to play, but I never had a call for it in any ensemble. Didn't expect to really.
