This is impressive skiing. I think the the timing depends on the turn. When skiing longer GS turns, the top WC skiers do appear to do what you termed a "ride" (in which the stance leg stays long; you described it as a "mostly static outside leg") after the sting, waiting to flex the stance leg until they approach the transition. By contrast, in shorter GS turns, and in SL, there doesn't appear to be much of a "ride". Instead, it appears they begin to gradually flex the stance leg as soon as the sting is over (typically just at or after the apex), flexing continously until they reach the transition. Thoughts?
@skidadTV
@skidadTV 15 дней назад
Absolutely true @AaaBbb-br2ts there are infinite turns that can be made. In a SL or shorter GS turn the outside leg does need to flex during the ride phase. The reason I still think “ride” is a good term is because while the outside leg is flexing the pressure on the outside ski remains relatively constant. The “pop” at the end of a turn comes from maintaining outside ski pressure to completion. If you had a gradual release of pressure to completion there would be no “pop”. Of course there are slight variations on everything, so by no means am I saying the outside ski pressure is absolutely consistent apex to completion. Try to “ride” and see how it affects your turns at any radius. Best of luck and check back in
@AaaBbb-br2ts
@AaaBbb-br2ts 14 дней назад
@@skidadTV I completely agree. If you flex too much or too aggressively, you soak up all those launching forces you get from the bottom of the turn, and lose the float-you’ve made your legs like a long-travel suspension on a motorcycle. And you don’t want to lose the float. So it’s a matter of adjusting the degree and timing of the flexion to get just the amount of float you want. I don’t fully understand this stuff but it seems that, in slalom, you don’t want a lot of float, since that takes too long. And you don’t want to wait until the end of the turn to flex, since things are moving so fast in SL that you’d need to retract your legs suddenly, resulting in a more jerky transition. By starting the flex at the apex, and finishing at the bottom, you get a smoother, more fluid transition. By contrast, GS is different. You have more time, so you can delay the flex and still get a fluid transition. And I’m not sure about this but in GS, particularly on the less-steep sections, I think racers like Odermatt sometimes deliberately use less flexion to get more of a launch, which they turn into a big lateral redirect. And speaking of redirects/stivots: I know this is OT for this video, but I saw your interview with Reilly in which you were talking about rolling the skis on edge at the top of the turn vs. delaying edge engagement until the “sting”. What I’ve noticed is that, particularly in steeper sections, racers like Hirscher and Schiffrin will indeed stivot during the float, such that by the time the skis have landed they’re already mostly pointing downhill, so there’s not much high-C edge engagement. But what I’ve also noticed is this: Regardless of whether they are floating or edging in the high-C, the timing of the tipping seems the same: They are rolling those skis up onto an angle in the high-C, regardless of whether the skis are in contact with the snow or floating above it. I.e., what’s cool is that they maintain essentially the same tipping mechanics regardless of whether they are on the snow or above it. And I see you doing just that during you own float (e.g., start about 2:18 in your video). At least, that’s what it appears to me. Like I said, there’s a lot about this I don’t understand.

Hi, I noticed your (and other good skiers’) outside foot is in forward of your hips when pressured in a turn. Doesn’t that mean you’re pressing the tails of the skies rather than pressing the center? Or the forward lean of the upper body counters that “feet in front of hips” and, in total, through pressing the tongue of the boots with your shines, you’re in the middle position? I always think that the outside boot and hips should line up on the vertical line from the slope to be in the centered position. I’ve been wondering why good skiers are in this “feet in front of the body” position that looks like they’re only pressing the tails at the first glance. Or the forward lean of the upper body counters all that and you’re in the centered position? Sorry for messing up, just a curious question.

I like to focus on keeping pressure on the tongue’s of the boots. If it looks to you like the position is back, try that but keep the ankle flexed

Wrong. The focus should not be on stivving the top of the turn, feathering in, or “clean completions”. The reason why Zurbruegg was fast was not because of his “completions”, it was because he was going deeper into the turn, allowing himself more room to work and bend the ski into the fall-line. What he called “elevation” when analyzing Windingstad was mistaken for depth. (The horizontal distance from the panel). Zurbruegg had nearly a meter more depth than windingstad and that’s why he was able to be done with his turn earlier, and releasing the ski deep into the next turn. It’s a steep pitch, so stivving snd redirecting is okay, but it’s not what should be looked at or analyzed.

Hi Joe, watching this video maybe 3-4 times and I think I got what you saying. Before I was a little confused about what exactly ankle rolling is. And I think I got it this time. So ankle rolling is then you apply gradual pressure at the top of the turn and when you pick up the speed that early edge change and pressure gets skipped to being light by using more ski pop which gives you the ability to change your edges in the air, so you don't use your energy, you just relax and change edges then you sort of aim your skis to the apex . As you land your legs act like spring and pressure mainly appears from your mass so the time that you apply pressure becomes way sorter. Funny but as I get tired I start to ski this way more without understanding what's actually happening. Not in the the way that I completely don't have I clue but in the way it right way of skiing or bad. Great stuff, thanks for your videos again!

Otherwise known as "The Phantom Move" because we can't see the inside ski lift in real time. Slow motion camera work comes to the rescue. I have been explaining this to anybody who cares to listen since I first noticed a slow mow of Lindsey Vonn skiing Slalom at Levi in maybe 2012? Another excellent video Ski Dad, right on the money. One of the best exponents of "The Phantom Move" is the Japanese skier Miku Kuriyama, here what you see in real time is not real, as with several aspects of skiing, it's an illusion. Slow mow gives us the real insight. Enjoy: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GbSXDx2QwOg.htmlfeature=shared

I have been looking for this Video since 2005 when I took up skiing again after a 20 year break. I found it by typing "Yes but how do you get your skis on edge" into YTube search & it came up about number 70 in the list. This video is excellent, especially the emphasis on "time spent" in the transition as opposed to "in the fall line". Well done. A gem.

Dad again great video. You have your own approach to explaining things you see in skiing. And I like it a lot. But it gives us less experienced, a lot of confusion. I think to understand you need to try it out first and monitor yourself so you get what Dad tries to say to us. I'm sure that good experienced skiers get easy with everything you try to say in your way. If I watched your videos a few years back I couldn't understand your thing too🙈 Luckily for me lot of things came to me naturally as progress I do some things but do not always understand but I get straight away everything that Dad says and everything becomes clear to me. Like this subject for forward move, I can be more forward or less and it gives me confusion about how much I have to be forward, do I have to be forward all the time, M I wrong if I am not always forward event if Im balanced, now you answering to my confusions and I were happy about it. Thanks one more time.

I have a wider right foot, One of the things my boot fitter did is make a 1 1/2-2 inch slice on the bottom of the liner to re leave some of the pressure, Then I skied t for a couple days and went back and had some punch work done. I really like your creative way of tackling the problem!

Great explanation! Thanks a lot! I observed very high vibrations on your outside ski. I have similar behavior on my ski on high speed turning Dose it mean the ski is running over the speed limit of it? Thanks
@skidadTV
@skidadTV 2 месяца назад
It could be the speed limit of the ski The speed limit of the ski is the point where you can no longer keep a balanced outside ski pressured So it may be the conditions or the tune, not necessarily the Ski itself. Or most importantly, the skill level of the skier

I've been called MacGiver many times for my ability to make something work out of necessity. I would have gone into a good ski shop and either buy a new boot board and have the shop grind them, or have them grind your existing boot boards. A hint for you boot boards and interior of your shell is to use one sided teflon tape. If you ground your shells there will be rough spots, along with where rivets or screws in their little pockets in the shell are rough surfaces. You liner will be much easier to put in or take out of the shell with the teflon tape.. You would think the liner would slide all over the insides of the shell, but it doesn't if your foot is properly sized for shell. Because I use Atomic Redster plug boots (a racers ski boot) that has laces, I should be able to open the shell and step into shell. However, unless the boot is very warm I usually put the liners into the shell first and then slip my feet into liner. Two other tricks to get boots on is to have a heater warm up the boots in your car or carry a small hair dryer to warm up the boots and dry off your feet before putting ski socks on. Never use the same socks that your wore in the car or train. I use a very thin merino wool and silk pair of ski socks (Terramar brand). I put a battery heater in the insoles which works great and I don't get cold feet. If you ski a lot, say at least three times a week your feet will shrink along with some of the liner packing out and you might have to use a pair of ankle nylons,, or very thin silk liners. I bought a device from a ski shop that has a hook that goes into the liner in the back and also rests on the heel of the boot where the rear binding attaches. I push down on the plastic device and the boot comes off much easier. I'm sure Joe knows this, but once you are done messing with your boots with some pads, tape, etc. your feet will actually be comfortable and can leave them on all day long. If you have to continually tighten your boots at the top of the lift and unbuckle when you get to the bottom, your boots are sized too big. You may be able to mess with your liner, but you may need a smaller shell (i.e.new ski boots).

Your videos have helped me a lot, especially with directing my limited focus to the end of my turns (to think about finishing the J shape rather than the entire S), and I've found your instruction straightforward to understand and novel in its framing of advice/lessons both old and new. In this video specifically, I want to ask about the lead change you mention at the end. Is this something you're mentioning as something we should aim for, or just pointing out as an indication of our ski/edge change? I'm curious since I've seen elsewhere that an inside ski tip lead should be minimized.

They all ski narrow short skis and on piste mostly as the piste is so good. Even the tourists get put on rental slalom skis and a lot can't carve anyway. But that's still easier than wider and longer to pivot on and race skis look cooler than narrower all mountains so...... So a 75 vs mid 80s doesn't change much really, just radius. But you are right, if you like offpiste and wider, it's fairly unlimited. Surprised you hadn't seen a Ski Mojo before?

Ischgl is great, like it so much more than Solden. Solden is actually a pretty big ski area but the layout is not great, so many people get funnelled into a few runs like pistes 1 and 30. Palinkopf in Ischgl often has the best snow and blacks 21 and 22 are super fun! And the final pitch back into town brings back so many memories! Absolute shitshow after 4pm and there will be a bunch of people from the bar cheering on those who struggle to get down, absolutely nuts!
