Contrary to what I've read about him, the decline of his career wasn't the result of "the dismissal of the contemporary artistic trends while incorporating the excesses of the 19th century". The 19th-century manner prevailed in the period leading to WW2, gradually subsiding to the new modernist post-war anti-Romantic approach. According to the article from the English version of Wikipedia, the decline started as a series of misfortunes that randomly overlapped to the irremediable detriment of his career, mismanagement being the crucial one.

È come un motore a 4 cilindri. 3 di questi hanno una resa eccezionale ma il n.4 ... ( Questo cilindro torna a funzionare come i primi 3 nella BOURE e nella GIGA finale. Se avesse avuto la stessa resa nei primi 4 movimenti sarebbe stata una interprepazione di riferimento )
Toscanini era come disse Furtwangler un mero "battitore del tempo". Eta inoltre di una maleducazione intollerabile. C'è da stupirsi che non gli abbiano mai spaccato uno strumento in testa
Quella di Toscanini,avendo avuto un padre di Parma,che oltretutto gli somigliava, è collera incontrollabile dovuta a trigliceridi alti. In Emilia tutto doveva essere fatto in fretta,anzi subito,e bene. Abbiamo avuto un tentativo di perfezionismo,grazie a Dio ed ai partigiani fallito, poiché anche se esistesse l'uomo perfetto in tutte le sue doti e capace di suonare ogni strumento ,da solo,non è Stato e non è orchestra
