Biotopia is a small museum and science center in Uppsala. Built in 1910, the building is now rebuilt and the museum was re-opened in 2007. Today, the focus of the museum is the science of biology and geology, with regional schools and general public as its main visitors. We produce films of varying lengths and also stream live content.
Strålande djupdykning i lodjurets värld. Tack Emil! Jag ville gärna vara med på plats i Biotopia, men nu räddade ni/ jag världen från 70km bilkörande och hoppas att jag får möta den Vilda Emil öga mot öga en annan gång! Marstalla-Björn
As promised, Linn has answered the remaining questions: “Can we send human DNA out, and hope that they develop life in a different planet?” This is more of a biology question, but presumably, isolated human DNA left on its own wouldn’t propagate as life even if placed in a suitable environment. The question of how life first emerged is a matter of ongoing research, but most theories involve ideas of slower evolution from simpler organic molecules and compounds that evolve to single cell organisms before more complex multicellular organisms, only reaching fully-formed mammals like humans billions of years later. So, one would probably not send out extracted human DNA specifically with hopes of seeding life from it, but perhaps other single cell organisms would stand a better chance at developing elsewhere. Even if it would work though, we also would not want to contaminate other planets or moons with our own DNA until we're sure there's no life there already. “Would a ‘space elevator’ be possible to build and use?” The short answer is: we’re not sure. The main obstacle identified so far are engineering issues, namely finding suitable materials for functional designs. If those could be overcome, it may be theoretically possible, but we are not yet at a point where we can confirm or deny its possibility in practice. A space elevator is at its core a structure - like a taut cable - connected to the Earth at the bottom and reaching all the way into space, held tight in the same way the sting of a yo-yo is tight when spinning it about your head. Space elevators require materials that are both strong and light and unfortunately we don't yet know of any material strong enough to work for Earth. However, the gravity of the moon (or Mars) is weaker than on Earth, so it might be possible there--but it would still be extremely expensive and complicated! “Could quantum entanglement be used in space communication for low latency?” The nature of quantum entanglement (QE) is another topic that is being investigated through ongoing research projects. Translating the QE effects seen in laboratories (which are still not fully understood) into useable technology is a very large step, and so it is very difficult to speculate on this today. To be continued! “Wasn’t there a project where people could volunteer to move to space? What happened to that?” There have been a number of private endeavours advertising such possibilities, but none have materialised as of yet. It is safe to say that if humanity reaches a point where permanent migration to a space-based habitat is actually possible, it would be sufficiently well-advertised through more formal channels that it would be hard to not to know about it. “Are humans durable enough for space travel?” This will ultimately depend on the length of space travel. The International Space Station (ISS) has been continuously occupied by a rotation of humans since November 2000, with the longest ever single stay in space being around 14.5 months and a handful of others also reaching 1+ year stays, but most stays are closer to ~6 months at a time. The effect of long-term stays in space is being continually assessed by studying returning astronauts, and some negative effects have been noted (e.g. muscle atrophy, eyesight disorders, and more) but longer stays and more data is needed to assess the feasibility of humans undertaking longer, multi-year trips. Additionally, when we're close to Earth its magnetic field protects us from the worst radiation in space, but this isn't something to rely on when travelling between planets, or on planets with weaker magnetic fields (like Mars) - so this is one of the many issues we'll need to solve before interplanetary space-flight is safe. “What are your opinions on the theory of black hole stars?” Black hole stars are hypothetical objects, and so their existence has not been confirmed. Unfortunately, none of the astronomers from this panel work closely on this topic. “Can we travel through wormholes?” Wormholes are theoretically possible according to the theories describing space-time, but they are problematic from the perspective of causality (which means that cause always precedes results) and are most likely unstable structures. From what we mathematically know about wormholes, they tend to minimize their openings, and enormous amounts of energy would be needed to keep them open for anything macroscopic. Hence, it is not practically possible for us to travel through wormholes, if they would exist at all in our universe.
