We're the Farnsworths. Our lives are anything but ordinary, and we are proud of the unconventional paths we’ve taken over the last 20+ years. They’ve brought us much adventure and joy.

In June 2018 we sold everything and moved into a 37ft travel trailer that we affectionately named "Wendy." We loved it so much that we eventually upgraded to a fifth-wheel toy hauler and purchased a home base in Phoenix. We follow travel nursing jobs all over the US as a family and road school our children. It's something we never imagined we'd be able to do but travel nursing has given us the time, freedom, and money to be able to do so.

We are passionate about helping you achieve unordinary paths in your life and nothing fires us up more than hearing your stories. We're so glad you're here. We may not know what comes next, but one thing is for sure...it won't be ordinary.

Hi, I know this is an old video. But I am trying to apply for my first travel contract. I applied to good samaritan as well, for an ICU position, but they called me and said I would be floating, and I would be rarely at the ICU, and i would have ratio of 1:6 in the med surg, or ER hold of 1:5. Is it something common for travel? My whole background is ICU, so I never had more than 2 pt in my career. I am overwhelmed that all contracts will keep me at med surg with a lot pts. I came from union hospital and even our med surg nurse had a better ratio than 1:6. Any tips for new travel?

We have just decided to sell our RPod and switch to tent camping. We are 70 years old but decided we can do this. Why? Finances were what made us decide to sell the camper, but honestly, the more I prepare for camping without a camper, the more excited I am getting. We can do this!

Thanks for the review. I was at Hilo Medical Center for 2 weeks with sepsis in 2019. The nurses were the best people there. Most of the doctors were obviously just learning. My experience was horrible from beginning to end. I completely understand why you would not return. When a decent doctor comes to the island they never stay. I have been a Big Island resident 35 years and it doesn't seem to get any better.

Finally, other people are seeing it. For us locals, HMC is not a place you want to go for major surgeries or advanced care. Everyone goes to Oahu for 2nd opinion or for any type of major surgeries. So much complaints of borderline malpractice and plain incompetence. My father went to the ER because of chest pain (3rd time in a week). First 2 times the travelling docs thought it was a heart issue and treated him for it. Since his heart was fine, they released the next day. The 3rd time visiting the ER, it was diff. Condition much worse but this time we had a local doctor at the hospital, dr lee-ching. He quickly identified that it wasnt his heart, but his pancreas. But because it was left untreated for such a long time, the infection spread to his kidneys and liver. Within a few hours, he passed. I still think that if we initially had competent docs, or atleast docs that werent overwhelmed, or local docs from the community that might actually care more for their patients, my dad would've had a lot better chance of surviving. It really felt that the traveling docs had zero compassion and didn't try near their best. Thats why ahortly after dr Lee-Ching became me and my family's pcp! There are many Hilo families that experienced the same issues as me.

I’m in Kailua Kona right now in a Surg Tech contract. The staff I’m working with are amazing! So kind and welcoming. I’m included I. Anything I want to be included in. The docs…well, let’s just say they are OVER travelers. I almost cancelled my contract two weeks in. I was able to work through it with the directors of the facility and it all worked out but it’s pretty tense with some of these docs. The lack of supplies and trained staff is difficult but the people I have worked with have really made the effort worth it. I go home in 31 days. But who’s counting. Lol

I’m in Kailua right now in a Surg Tech contract. I tried to bring my dog with me and couldn’t get him on a plane. I will NEVER do a contract without him again! Your numbers and assessment are spot on. Glad I’m having this experience but counting the days until I can get back to my dog and back on track financially.

it is and will forever be known as "Hilo Hospital". no matter how many billionaires fly through trying to make everyone love them as they buy up as much land as possible on the island. old crusty white dude aside, pretty accurate review of our hospital. Having had multiple close friends who've worked there.. im glad they found better places to work lol.

Haole in the Hawaiian dictionary means, 'foreigner' but since the early 1900's it became the derogatory term for any white person from the mainland mainly because there is some throw back from the overthrow of the late monarchy. Most locals still resent the overthrow by the united states so that is why most locals don't like mainlanders. Well that and the way foreign investors buy up all the land and hike up the prices. Oh and if your husband ever decides to come back here for another contract tell him to remember these words to the next nurse to acts all high maka maka (snobby to him) Kuli kuli no waha (cool-lee cool-lee no va-ha) it means shut your mouth in hawaiian. My aunt told that advice to a traveling nurse in the early 90's (she was a caretaker nurse) it worked like a charm. Also for advice for budgeting from a local here don't listen to half the people telling you stuff about budgeting on the internet they are full of crap. there are some great spots for supper cheap stuff in the islands. all you got to do is ask.

What is the process of getting your pet a “ticket” to fly as cargo vs. baggage. Is that what you guys did the day of at the airport or do you pay for that before arriving at the airport? I’m a bit worried because I won’t be flying with my pet, but someone will be picking up my pet.
@NoOrdinaryPath

We booked it at the same time we booked our flights about 6 months in advance. Hawaiian airlines directed us to the right place to book her on the phone. We knew in advance she would was a cargo ticket. :) We went to the airport a few days before to confirm the crate was the correct size. :)

think he was being very kind........ wait for the Attitude you may get when you bring up a discrepancy. sorry to make it sound like there are not mostly good Intentioned workers, etc.... but the downsides are WAY OUT OF KILTER. The " Its' all GOOD " attitude is not acceptable. If you want all the fancy "bells and whistles" you desire; then you need to form a better work Ethic.

yes, very plantation mentality......... the care all around this Island extremely poor in many instances ........ can't even get a Dr.s office front staff to be competent... and some see how much unwarranted charges they can sneak on. One thing they all seem to do immediately is either gaslight, lie, and always blame someone else ! not until you threaten them with calling the Ins. Co. or MEDICARE to complain, do they try to backslide and apologize and admit they have an issue in their business. Its part of the fabric here, honestly. Can't own up to even making a mistake...... also they are either not too bright, and or right out of high-school, or their bosses do not TRAIN them properly. Had all these above mentioned things happen more than once in the same office for the same issue. and another catastrophe in a different Dr. office. the nest week. The Insurance Co. here are disastrous. OMG BEWARE - BE PREPARED AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE, DOUBLE CHECK EVERY APPT. MADE AND DETAILS NEEDED, before you go. and don't leave until you get Answers to your questions. and always make a reference to Date and Person whom you talked to. TIP of the ICEBERG for the so called Paradise.

As someone who spent five nights of horror in said facility, I can attest to the fact that they hire cro- magnon orderlies ( 7 in a group)who scream like banshees at around 3 am without supervision. Had I not been tethered to a drain tube, I would have walked out . During daylight hours the place is just like any other hospital, professional and competent.

Sounds like Hilo maybe a little bitter towards travel nurses; with a thinking that you are 'taking' people's jobs. Either way very unprofessional and tacky of them.

Great video - I also did not realize the bottom is a broiler despite growing up with ovens that were exactly like that! I have used my RV oven a lot (the sales guy pointed out that newer rigs were being made without them) to bake a Premade lasagna while we relax outside, scones for breakfast (also frozen and ready to plop in the oven in the morning) and did notice it takes much longer to cook. We have the food thermometers, but the temp gauge is a good idea as well. We boondock with some frequency and while we have a generator, using propane helps!

From a patient’s perspective this hospital’s emergency room is rude to the patients often. Some staff don’t show much respect toward patients, especially if the patient has mental health issues or if they think the patient isn’t represented by family. I’ve filed a few complaints against some staff for threats, abuse, and outright rude behavior. I don’t normally complain but this hospital is turning me into an outright Karen. I’ve traveled as far as Waimea because the service at HMC can be so bad. If it was possible I’d never go to this hospital but unfortunately it is the nearest to where we live. With that said, it is a very busy place and some of the staff is really great. It’s luck of the draw on who you’ll get and how you’ll get treated. The guards are really nice though. Always a smile.

Good to know! We jumped through an extra hoop then. I think the little extra we paid our old vet to send us one was worth the peace of mind for us. I did not ever speak to someone in Hawaii about that specificly so they may be right. That was how our vet and myself interpreted the checklist.

I know the priblem .its that damn equalizer hitch you got on the truck . Yess you do . Im looking rite at the famn thing 743 frame time . That truck os too small for the camper the camper tries to pull front wheels of truck up but thecequlizer hitch prevents that . Problem.is though when truck runs out of pavement it hits dirt or vise versa the truck hiys pavement the trailer pushes down on equilizer hitch the stess goes back to frame of trailer then breaking the weld on hitch frame to trailer or even breaking the frame at nose of trailer . So if you want a bigg camper you need a dually truck that can handle the tow hitch weight . Or GET A SMALLER TRAILER!!! Not a hate message just trying to help you .
