The Right Car is hosted by Matt Campbell, a motoring journalist and presenter who has almost 15 years of experience helping people decide on their next set of wheels. Matt goes through the stuff you want to know - but also the important stuff you NEED to know.
After working at Drive.com.au, CarAdvice, CarsGuide and now contributing to CarExpert and GoAuto, Matt decided it was time to launch his own channel aimed directly at people who need help choosing their new car. And that's where The Right Car comes in!
Very interested in this car. Plug in hybrids eligible for novated leasing tax benefits for a couple of more years should being down cost a little more.
Looks amazing to be honest and fuel efficiency! Buying a Porsche Cayenne isn’t the most practical choice. Not surprised this car was the most popular selling car in China in 2023 and continues to break records.
Great review Sir! Can't deny that this is absolute bang for your buck. People do get caught up in brands etc but if you are impartial then this is great value. I own a h6 ultra as well and the tech in it surpassed every other car. Budget wasnt an issue it was simply that the others were so ridiculously overpriced. So glad i went with the h6. it's been such a pleasure to drive and the heated seats, steering wheel etc have all been awesome. Would definitely get this as well if i had a larger family.
One aspect of review that many people don't do is night time driving and wet conditions (light/medium /heavy). If safety is the concern, I believe driving in those conditions will test the car capabilities to handle such challenges. And also, for myself, in the car is where I can listen to my favourite jazz tracks and oldies, etc, so sound system is also as important as the safety techs. But, rarely ever mentioned in the review. If the sound system is not up to my standard, I will go to next vehicle, especially nowadays they're all built in with the info display.
Brilliant review! Matches my own findings. And it is so unbelievably quiet. Seems to be the best SUV value offer on the market atm. Especially as it is a Plug In Hybrid .
Currently own a 2014 Kia Sportage Platinum. Never one issue with this car and love it! That's why I'm seriously considering buying another Sportage and going HEV this time. Your review was so well done. The detailed info and how you organised it are exceptional. Kudos, mate!
Possibly. However the BYD dealer network. currently sucks balls if you’ve spoken to anyone who has actually had to interact with them. Also. 20,000km service interval on any kind of ICE car? No.
Yes I interacted with them, as picked up my sealion 6 on Monday. No issues, and even had one staff member go above and beyond. My experience with other brands has been mixed Ford lied about the financing, Skoda lied about the software updates, BMW sabotaged the car. Subaru was quite good in all aspects.
It is not a traditional ICE engine, so far my car, has done 90km in hev mode and 143km in pure EV mode. Expect in our usage case 1km HEV to every 4km EV mode. so petrol engine will not get a heavy workload. Still will get oil changed more frequently as I do with all my cars.
At this price, unless you are a Toyota tool, it would be completely foolish to get Rav 4. The nasty plastics, 20 yo tech, the 30 yo hybrid tech, BYD is just on another 2 levels above any Toyotas.
so u need to allow for the price of the wall charger then plus instalation as well so another couple of grand on top of the price of the car getting a bit exy then
Car comes with both granny charger(1kw 240v) and vehicle to load cable. I use the granny charger to top up battery after wife drives it to work and back and shopping run. It takes about 3hts to go from 85% to 100% soc. Usually do two hours in the morning and a top up in the afternoon while the sun is providing me very cheap electricity. Note first 3000 buyers get a free wall charger 7kw single phase (you need to pay for installation).
Watching your videos over months I have a very good confidence in them and what you report. Well done. With tyres I’d go Continental or Michelin. With rooftop solar at home this would be a no brainer for me. Rented ATTO 3, 2 rentals of the same Tesla Highland model 3 (2000 km all told including a 4 day 1500km Easter country trip) tell me full EVs are not for me. The Tesla was a horrible disappointment.
Sounds like this will be an important model in the mid size SUV wars at a very competitive price and servicing and warranty package. Good Review thanks Matt
Byd DMi is perfect for me everyday use bcos the poor ev charging facilities in Europe. For day to day use it has the battery range for what I use and for longer trips I sometimes do the dual mode is perfect. I can drive hard on petal and still without the petrol engine kicks in. Even when the engine kicks in you don't really feel it bcos it's stays really quiet for charging the battery. I don't like the Toyota hybrid, battery range is too short and you have to go gently on the petal to drive on quite ev mode. Otherwise the petrol engine kicks in and noisy.
The LX500D looks perfect for my use in the NT. Long highway trips, corrigated dirt road runs, and a lot of boat towing. As far as "off roading" goes, I would take it on most trails as long as the vegetation does not overhang onto the track. Never took my 200 series on those trails either. Not a big fan of door sctratches
Impressive EV range and hybrid fuel economy figures in terms of the size and weight of this car. It blows RAV 4 out of water IMO, for lots of people’s bias toward Chinese car: reliability and dealership network, well, time and market feedback will tell, For me, it is definitely a RAV4 killer. I hope there is HEV model as convenient home charging facility is not available to me. Ready to see more of this car on the road in Australia in the future.
Getting a free wall charger for my new sealion 6. (First 3000 purchasers) But it will be sent by BYD in the near future. Did not come with the car. Car does come with a 1-1.4kw granny charger that plugs into a standard wall socket. Took 9.5 hrs to fully charge battery from 25%. Since then wife drives to work, then the supermarket and then back home. Last two days it fully charged in about 3hours. During the day free solar. And if I have to, in the evening,we use off-peak at 18cents/kW between 9-12pm
The whole Chinese EV is a plague, Australia needs to stop them. One of my friends asked me to pair my phone with his BYD and I didn’t. Almost felt like my phone’s data was going to China. Sorry but I would rather not buy any Chinese EV and would keep money in my account.
Thank you for this great review :) I own a 2015 Akera, purchased new with 70,000km on it. I've loved (new) things (to me) like radar cruise & blind spot alert - biggest annoyance is the noisy cabin, think is more tire than engine noise (... tire monitoring & sport mode i've also loved!) Anyway, it occurs to me that at this mileage - I might have a decision to make as to whether to keep it (down to being worth nothing) OR use the $20'ish K trade-in that I might be able to get on it towards a 2023 (low milage) - what do you reckon, keep vs trade up? General things you mention like no touch screen, cabin, engine/road noise - do other models (e.g. RAV4) answer to these issues? Would have been good if you said like 'I don't like this in the CX5, the xxxxx doesn't have this issue'. Haven't quite worked out what I'd be missing out on for the G35 GT SP vs the G35 Akera. I've really liked the Akera options, but then again that's all I really know. Really keen to hear you opinion. Thank you...
Thanks! Is yours a petrol or diesel? If petrol, keeping it could be a fine option. Diesels have their issues. It’s always a great question - keep your car and drive it for its life, or get something new. If it’s doing the job for you, and you like it, and you’re not afraid of spending a few grand in a few years to keep it running, then it should be a simple decision.
Ouch, BYD is this really how your going to treat your customers? Auto Expert John Cadogan ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xcv9Tk-jON8.htmlsi=jV1Y_WwC0wK-NDqo
Great review, thank you. Really appreciate the test you did on pure EV, which I feel is a big question mark for a lot of people looking at the EV only use scenario. To be fair, I'm much more interested in the BYD Shark but can use this as encouragement that the Sharks EV only range will be as close to what's on paper as advertised. Thank you for all your work on reviews.
Growing in popularity in Latin America and Brazil. BYD is constructing at the site of old Ford factory a plant to build 150,000 cars per year in Brazil.
Thanks! Glad you trust my work. And yes, I can understand that. It mightn’t be a traditional way of dealing with customers and after sales, but if the product is good enough I’m sure it will be something that they will improve.
BYD have treated me well thus far, 1 month in. Cannot say the same for Skoda(VW) HQ who outright lied to me regarding mib1 map updates that never happened. Their service centre near me kept trying to rip me off they quoted $13k to replace turbo and water pump, or BMW service Centre where X5 transmission plug mysteriously fell out after a service..destroying the transmission as it was being driven home at the time.
My husband loved this car, and after research on all brands, we put a deposit down for this. And yes, we own a Camry, but we dont stick to brands, we go with whats best for us.
Its base model outshines many other cars with "full" options or top model. I think Outlander PHEV is a better car, although it's considerably more expensive.
Mitsubishi outlander costs here 15k US dollars more, so still the cheapest SUV alternative is the tiggo pro. Unless you buy off the second hand market.
This has just increased my anticipation for the local Shark launch now. With the FBT excemption for leases taken in the next FY, these look VERY easy for a lot of people to get into.
Too affordable for all that tech at a low price so that is also why america is putting 100% tariff on chinese ev's so the price is higher than non chinese ev's with low tech.
Or think of it this way US/Japanese/European car companies had the tech 20 years ago but failed to develop it. It was more profitable to charge high prices for old tech for which they already had lots of factories. The Chinese simply built hi tech factories for BEV. PHEv and sell those cheaply. Leaving legacy companies with old factories that are becoming worthless. See Ford/GM sales of factories in last few years as they become regional players rather than global ones
I have the fantastic BYD Seal premium but my wife has severe range anxiety, (we had a problem with two different broken charge stations on a recent road trip and we finished up having to spend quite some time and distance finding one that worked), so I’m thinking that this car, or one very similar, may be the better choice for her. We have an appointment to look at this car next week along with the Peugeot 408 HPEV.
