No other franchise has started so string and been mismanaged quit like this . Terminator is close ...star wars is trying to catch up ...everything after THE highlander is hot garbage in a dumpster fire
_Batman: Mask of the Phantasm_ was so good. The animation, voice acting, and tone was remarkable. Making the daughter the antagonist was just bad writing in my opinion. It was a cheap way to incorporate a narrative "twist". Similar to how stories that end with "it was all a dream" is a cheap and lazy narrative device.. Revealing the daughter to be the antagonist was just illogical and bizarre and blemished an otherwise masterpiece of a film.
I have a problem with just one scene in this movie, where the crew of the Betty are delivering and handing over their human cargo, even if they did not know exactly what they were going to be used for. Well may be Call did know. But that scene is in a way making then from the usually lovable pirates that we could care about when they started dying, to go fuck yourself and die, pirate scum. It is a horrible fate for an ordinary worker to wake up from cryosleep and see a facehugger staring at him. They should've done the human cargo thing differently and this crew would have certainly endeared themselves to the audiences, and I'll try to justify that below. You see, the crew of the Betty may resemble a family unit. with Elgyn being the dad, Hillard is the passionate and caring mom, Christy is the cool uncle, Johner is the spoilt brat and bully, Vreiss is the child born with a defect but loved anyways and makes himself useful with other things. And lastly Call, the hot babysitter for Johner and Vreiss. Just a thought!
My most watched film of any genre.. I was 12 in 1982 when The Thing was released and I've watched it countless times since then. Even the score is superb, it's chilling, foreboding and creepy as shit.
The predators in AVP are supposed to be younger, therefore different build. Paul WS Anderson decided to omit this explanation from the film, the fact he did this was touched upon by Lance Henrikson in the commentary. If I recall, Paul WS Anderson was in the commentary also but didn't respond as to why he did that, possibly a regret?
This was a great retrospective and it really takes me back to seeing Explorers in the theater, which was the only time I saw it. And even as a kid I had the same problem you describe here: the kids just getting off the ground is so entertaining, even magical, that space itself becomes a letdown. Every once in a while something reminds me that Weird Al was the voice of one of the aliens and even that wasn't that memorable to me because the ending was such a letdown.
I almost can't believe so many critics hated this film and hurt it's creators when it's actually one of the best horror movies of all time (and has easily some of the best practical effects ever put to film).
I think it might be fair to say that this is literally the most iconic movie of all time. Every single aspect of it is legendary. John Williams' first time working with the LSO that's wild
Used to have such a huge collection of LDs back in the day. Would go buy imports from Tower Records in London. NOTE:- Rip them all because disc rot is a real thing.
This movie was supposed to be based on the fall of the Soviet Union. Chancellor Gorgon was supposed to be a play on Gorbachev, the last leader of the Soviet Union.
I know this is very late, but I believe this may some good trivia: 20:48 When the new scenes were filmed, Benjamin Ford was the same age as his father Harrison was when he filmed the original scenes.
I have never seen IV, but I plan to give it a viewing soon. What a shame that Christopher Reeve and the entire franchise was let down by the owners of the franchise.
Oliver you hit the nail on the head as usual! I bought the Donner cut as soon as it was released, and did enjoy much of it, but it’s an incomplete film. Like it or not, Lester’s Superman II works much better overall. It’s a shame Donner never got to make II Tthe way he wanted, but in just glad we have both versions today.
Superman is an example of a movie that excels on every possible level. Story, writing, acting, casting, music, effects, cinematography, and of course directing. EVERYTHING works flawlessly. A film that makes you laugh, cry, and believe a man can fly.
Hopefully if they do another 4k version like the extended or the longer tv cut versions giving it a much better clarity and sharpness and if possible removing the soft filter look and bring it to a much more higher definition
