British area bombing inflicted very little damage on an industry. before you bring up the fire bombing of japan, you need to understand that in japan much of the manufacturing occured in small factories in peoples homes. also, the japanese cities were made of wood and paper. as to the lose rates, one has to understand what the goal was. in order to invade europe the allies needed to destroy the luftwaffe, this could not be done with the british night bombing. the US bombers were inflicting enough damage on germany to force the luftwaffe to oppose the raids, this allowed the escort fighters to destroy the luftwaffe in the air or on the ground.
