I'm using my grandfathers family cast iron shoe repair" last " as an anvil ,hitting it with a steel desert spoon. Both resonate to my ear. Does that answer my original question?
GBL news from Thacks: 2nd and 3rd Gig of the year for all my classes next thursday at our Arts Beats Showcase event. We have all our feeder primary schools coming for a day matinee with our community coming in the evening 5-6pm - It's gonna be a cracker (We have some Wild Cherry, Bruno Mars, Jason Mraz, Laufey, Beatles and Santana ready! ) Rehearsals are in full swing and there is a buzz in the air! (I'm crazy but everyone seems to be willing to follow my madness! ) Will make sure I have more footage for you all too!
This is amazing @mattthackray9236. Our favourite part is that you're bringing the feeders in - brilliant! You're already casting the vision for their future and they're not even at your school yet. Looking forward to a full report!
Sorry lads, life had other plans was pumped for today. But broken laptop, conveyancers, in-laws, foot infections - last minute doctor appointments all conspired against me - it wasn't to be! I even had the sequin jacket ready!
This is HUGE! So many teachers focus on the content of understanding the concepts of music, but for most students, the difficulty lies in structuring an answer and using literacy skills to formulate their thoughts into a coherent answer. I love this!
I must've cropped that out when I took the screenshot. I'm sure it's there but just a really long way to the left? I'd love to know how Aristotle pronounced "paradigm" though...
First criticism: math is already plural as well as short for mathematics- saying maths feels idiotic for a lifelong English speaker. Secondly, Western music has roots and no singular contributor. I’m a huge proponent of Pythagoras and perhaps he did introduce notes and their ratios to humanity via the quadrivium, but Western music came from Europe and infected those countries they invaded.
I agreed with everything Pete said today! But seriously, I love that GBL is developing a folklore that we need to go back to if we haven’t been following. Blindboy is proud of you/us 😍
Thanks James. This comment is now part of our folklore! We'll refer to it as "That comment from James about our folklore", which sets us up for "if you don't know what we are talking about, you can go back and learn more about the folklore of GBL". Thanks! #folkloric
Pythagoras' ratios weren't perfect or even correct. They are off by multiple decimals no matter which way you try to stretch the maths, hence the issue of tuning temperament.
That’s hilarious! Physics aren’t perfect and that’s why pianos and guitars don’t entirely conform to math (which is already plural) Math is the discovery of Man while instruments are his invention and the larynx holds better pitch but if you want proof that the math is better than the calculator just remember that we’re taught to estimate and the values of irrational numbers; the wings of the bumblebee are a different concord altogether…
How can math be plural? Sport us a concept, sports is a variety of different sports and plural. Maths is a collective noun meaning a variety of different ways of computing ,measuring by geometric means, summation.
Congratulations on the Thesis, really looking forward to learning from this and putting it into action. I'm at a very early stage of my education career (with no other music mentors), so this information is invaluable!
Good discussion - didn’t know that word ‘Neo-liberalism’ found the discussion really interesting. Also, intrigued about your connection to Music Therapy. Will google Brad Fuller and wonky donkey😂 - and have a read 😊
Thanks Matt - I didn't know much about it when I set out on the journey either - turns out it's a big deal. I look forward to chatting some more about all of this with you.
Thanks for commenting - as I'm sure you can tell - we feel the same. That's why we're getting involved and "Having Our Say" by completing the survey. This draft shows evidence that the writers are taking feedback on board. We just need to keep feeding back...
This is amazing - totally gonna steal all of this 😂 as good artists do!- loved the ‘gumbo ‘idea and ‘like a version’. units of work - and framing it as preparing for a gig is genius!!! - Love the content❤
Thanks for doing this. I’ve been teaching internationally for 12 years and returning to teaching music in NSW. It feels like ive entered a time machine. Nothing seems to have changed. Totally agree not enough about improvising , songwriting, storytelling and culture building. I’m inspired that you are keen to be an agent of change and feel motivated like you to make a music curriculum our youth deserve❤🙌😎
This is great - clear, detailed - and evidence based - there is no reason why every student shouldn’t be getting good bands if they follow this advice.
Can you guys share the infographic on your Facebook page so that those of us who aren’t on Twitter can share it from the source? Also, you can tell that you guys know what you’re talking about because you’re all wearing glasses! On a more serious note, Brad’s done a lot of research about research, is there a chance that we’ll see a Future Cats series (maybe as blog posts) focussing in on researchers that you guys think will have the same sort of impact on music education once they’ve had the time to establish themselves?

Terrific work, gentlemen! I have enjoyed watching these from a distance. Such a beautiful closing point that NSW could potentially have a world-class syllabus. A second consultation period (not during Term 3!) would go a long way to making this a reality.
