Welcome to my Wild Backyard.

Thank you for joining me as I share the stories of the fascinating creatures that visit my garden. Some are bold and flamboyant, while others are tiny and shy, but each of them play a vital role in the ecosystem, and everything is connected in the great cycle of life.

For me, this is a journey of discovery. I’m continually amazed by the endless diversity and complex lives of the creatures around me. I’ve learned that even a single native shrub can attract a myriad of insects, birds, and mammals.

By growing native and endemic species, we can create a haven for wildlife in our gardens, providing crucial food, refuge and habitat.

Ultimately, the goal of my channel is to inspire curiosity about the wild, natural world around us, and to encourage the cultivation of native and endemic plants, to help protect and enhance biodiversity.

Thank you for joining me on this journey.

2 or 3 month ago I freaked out when I saw a spider in general. It changed when youtube suggested me a video about jumping spiders that quickly lead to tarantulas. Now I not want just one, but 3 tarantulas and counting. It's the Brazilian Black, the Mexian Red Knee and the Caribena Versicolor. The huntsman still gives me some chills but actually their "face" somehow look cute event they look a little bit grumpy

Well done on overcoming your fear of spiders. They are other worldly kind of creatures that can give some people the shivers. I think they are amazing. There are so many weird and wonderful kinds of spiders and jumping spiders are my absolute favourites. I am acutely aware that some species can be deadly but to be fair to the spiders, most are harmless. I hope to find some other wild spiders in my backyard and bring you their stories. ❤️🕷️🕸️
@MADxHAWK
@MADxHAWK Месяц назад
@KathrynKermode Well im from Germany so I don't have to fear deadly spiders. Most of them are quite small but some of them can bite what might be like a mosquito sting at worst. I had a spider mom, the size of a pinky fingernail with legs, that moved into my bathroom and layed eggs. Was very interesting to watch her over time. Sadly she moved on after her spiderlings hatched. Now I hope I will find a juvenile female brazilian black and Mexican red knee tarantula at the moment they are rarely available here. And I need a breeder with papers cause my country requires a prove of origin. Only breeded spiders are legal to protect the natural population what I absolut agree with. So I rather wait then getting an illegal caught one.

Move to Qld if you want to cure your arachnophobia. There's so many big Huntsmen up here you'll get used to having them around you. I much prefer them in the house than the cockroaches they eat. BTW, mate of mine got bitten on the back of his hand by one. No big deal, bit red and itchy around the bite area for about a week and that was it.
@KathrynKermode
@KathrynKermode 2 месяца назад
Haha, Qld-the ultimate spider boot camp! I must admit I do prefer it if the spiders live outside, but I would pick a Huntsman housemate over cockroaches any day. Thanks for sharing the story about your mate-it's good to know their bites aren't too bad.

So cool to see your spiders. Looks like a great 8 legger to have around. Here in Kentucky, US, we have lots of wolf spiders. They are funnel web builders and a healthy population of wolf spiders means fewer black widows. Thanks for sharing your world with us.
@KathrynKermode
@KathrynKermode 2 месяца назад
Thank you. We also have wolf spiders here, they are very interesting. The female displays a high degree of parental care, carrying her egg sac with her wherever she goes and once it hatches she carries the tiny spiderlings on her back until they disperse, often by aerial ballooning on tiny threads of silk. The Australian Redback Spider is another icon and a close relative of the Black Widdow. The Redback is commonly taken down by the Daddy Long Legs which is without a doubt a permanent fixture in the top corners of rooms in all our Aussie houses.
