508th Airborne: "a hastily written order was sent around the entire division informing the soldiers that deer were not to be killed and eaten, causing several of the unit’s cooks to speedily remove venison stew from the menu. Dozens of local girls found themselves left with more permanent memories of their presence, with more than a few of the children sired during their short stay never finding out who their real fathers were."
@@okiktour Of the monument and why there were messages with American flags pinned to it? The American 508th were billeted in tents at Wollaton Park during World War 2. I don't think people were very happy with them hunting the deer for sport. especially while rationing was in effect. People in Nottingham were going hungry and couldn't touch the deer and the well-fed Americans were shooting them for fun. It did nothing to change the opinion that the Americans were "over-paid, over-sexed and over here" but they were going to fight in Europe and give their lives, so we called it evens! Good video, BTW. A rare sunny day and I've never actually been to see the deer. Beautiful creatures, if best avoided during rutting and calving season (May-July and September-November). Don't approach them or feed them at any time, but especially not then as they may attack. Stay on the paths and if they approach you, walk calmly away. Don't shout or wave your arms at them. No dog walking, of course.
Keep up the videos mate 😊 it's always great to see all these amazing places :) I'm just starting out on RU-vid I do a few walk about videos showing off places :) I like seeing what's about 😂
