Another experiment would be trying different types of biochar. Like charcoal made at lower temperatures thats used for cooking or made in barrels with low oxygen vs charcoal made at high temperatures thats brittle that has a better absorption rate. And then compare that to activated carbon to see if using activated carbon is better or if its to costly compared to the other type of biochar.
Did you soak the biochar in a source of nutrient (mainly nitrogen) before application? Urine is the classic gardener example but manure would be the farmyard equivalent. Without this you'll forseeay decrease yeild until the very porous charcoal is saturated with nitrogen, as up until that point it's removing nitrogen from the soil.
The cows look healthy, I been feeding my dairy cows FIR (carbon clay) for many years and they look better, have way less health problems and the manure has a better smell. Biochar is also in carbon clay but from thousands years ago.
what happens if charcoal absorbs nuclear radiation? anti-radiation or even keep radiation longer? which if a disaster occurs all farmers must dispose of their charcoal that has been planted for decades at a very high cost.
If there was a nuclear contamination that farm wouldn't be farmed with or without charcoal in the soil. You don't just clean up nuclear radiation. But charcoal in the soil can prevent things in the soil from leeching into an aquifer like if farmers in some areas use to much turkey manure those nitrates may leech into the water. Charcoal in the soil could prevent that and make it so farmers spread less manure over the years. That and in california theyre using charcoal to absorb cadium or some type of bad thing in the soil to lock it up so to speak. Its not removed from the soil, but doesn't leech out i heard.
Canola is a neurotoxin, rapeseed, a member of the mustard family and should not be ingested. It is a biproduct of industrial process in Canada and the name 'Canola' is a made up word from Canada oil=canola. Taking the trouble to experiment with biochar, you might think about removing canola.
G'day fellow south Aussies love your videos and the work your putting in, I would love a follow up on your direct drill seeder video also. Both great methods of incorporation however this one is cracking good , I've loved dung beetles since I was boy this method is brilliant, can't think of a single negative and the positives just keep popping into my head, no degradation or pasture down time all just carries on 24 7 while being grazed, no diesel no machines cheapest little love makin dung rollers ever, tractors don't make new little tractors on their own! @@MistressOP No. Their error was using...RAW BIOCHAR! When you dose biochar do not forget to charge it with NITROGEN source. And inoculate with compost juice or dung water/liquid manure. Work is really smelly, and made you vomit but...need to be done ONCE! (plus biochar is absorbing the odors)
I am curious as to how you activated your char ..... and what you activated it with?. One approach I am keen to try is a concrete batching plant, and injecting with a slurry spreader. So mixing 10:1 Compost:Biochar with possibly a fish/Seaweed wetting agent in the batching plant and then via a slurry injector into the soil. It might get around the flow characteristics of the powdered form ... If your a dairy farmer, I am guessing you have a slurry tanker of some sort?.

Fair play to you's two, probably going to be a couple years before you see any benefit, until then it will simply absorb everything around it. I would recommend looking into compost tea/compost extract to really make the best of your labours so far. This will add the beneficial microbes and fungus required for healthy soil. Elaine Ingham compost tea and Johnson Su Bioreactor for making compost suitable for making tea. good luck.
