What about people who have advanced osteoarthritis with knee pain and really need knee replacement surgery. Can they do squats using a lower weight? This is my situation now.
I am having a problem that after the first rep I flex my left wrist and it remains wrong for the rest of the set. And the bar starts to slides a bit leaving it unbalanced by the end of the set. The squat is the only exercise I still fear, I am getting the hang of the power clean and will certainly get it right before a halfway decent squat.
2:23 Holy cow. I thought this guy was great because he looks in his upper 70s. He's only in his early 60s? I'm 60 and he looks a little younger than my dad. Strength is #1, but you also have to pay attention to cardio and diet. Don't put all your eggs in one basket. I bet he has a garbage diet. He has to sit down between sets? Keep moving. Stay on your feet moving most of the day. That's important when we are old. Eat right and maybe that gut will get smaller. That's just as bad for healthy aging as being too skinny. But hey, if longevity isn't important, and you're only interested in winning powerlifting competitions, do what you have to do and gain more weight.
I feel like Rip just walked in on me masturbating in the garage and is giving me a 2 hour lecture on why it's inappropriate to do certain things in shared spaces.
do you have suggestions on volume for us Fat Bastards that were sedentary during our careers and now (I'm 65) want to get stronger/lighter for retirement
I simply can't comprehend people getting jammed up squatting AFTER the invention of the half rack and power rack. To me, this is like being crippled by polio in 1995. You have to be an idiot. I can't count the number of people lifting at gyms and online who don't know how to set the rack pins at a useful height. 😂 It is something to see.
Good on working out...but 165 to 225 and a 315 squat.....something not firing if i went from 230 to 275 pretty sure ill have a 500 lbs squat instead of a 405 squat as a newbie. Im a intermediate now around 210 lbs.
Rip? I started listening to your podcast and also reading your books! My question is: can you go into detail as to why sets of 5 are better than sets of 8 or 10? You say on the podcast that your trainees got stronger and bigger faster? How much faster? Can you kindly provide stats? Maybe for some of us going a bit slower might make us a pussy but it’s better to go slow than not at all? As Bill O”Reilly would say What say you?
How much weight should I use in a pause squat, my current max squat is 233, i'm 62, 5'9" 180, don't sleep enough, don't eat enough and drink too much, thanks for the help
All excellent advice, obviously. Also, listen to your body and don't be overly macho. It's better to do a bit less than you had programmed for the day, or even way less, than push something because of ego and pull a muscle or something that might take 8-12 weeks to properly heal. For me, this is really the hardest thing, to give myself permission to say "not today."
