how long does it take for the lemon balm to come back after such a drastic harvest? I only heard 2 ways to preserve drying & tincture. did I miss something ?
@thetravelinghomesteader658
@thetravelinghomesteader658 2 месяца назад
It took a few weeks, but I also did this towards the end of the growing season. Here in Oregon the end of the growing season is around the time of the fall rainy season, so with the rain it came backwards rather quickly. But I could harvest that bush now ( in June) and probably get another harvest in a few months with watering.

Good question, I did rinse it off before putting it in the bucket. But I will admit, the rinse was as I watered it before cutting!
@kindredinspirit
@kindredinspirit 3 месяца назад
The only bad thing about the bucket stuffing is for safety purposes the entire plant being fresh needs to be completely submerged as the I submerged fresh plant will mold and the spores will taint the alcohol during straining. I’m wondering your not worried about that?
@thetravelinghomesteader658
@thetravelinghomesteader658 3 месяца назад
I did actually submerge the plant matter all the way under the alcohol. In the end, I took the time to submerge the plant in the alcohol every hour or so until it sat under the liquid on its own.

I admire you doing all the different tincture and crafts you do. I day dream it then life gets busy and I forget. Congrats on the swarm. Idk what call it so bare with me, but we have a bee farm behind our house. Usually they get truck loads of bees in. So far they haven't. I have noticed we never ever see the big bubble bees. Usually the farm gets the skinny body ones. Our trees and stuff are full of the great big bumble bees. The northern lights here were iffy at best. I grew up in Alaska and have seen my share of it. Oh wow ya yall had lot more then we did! If you sit out at night with it and just quiet down your mind and body you can literally feel the tingle in your body of the magnetic pull

Its not convenient or the best. But multiple uses for aquanet hair spray. Got to use the unsented. All it really is is alcohol and lacquer. The alcohol steralizes and the lacquer seals. So works beautiful for minor burns, fire starter, we have even temporarily coated cuts on the outside of the camper till storms are done. And if you go to hospitals or just regular doc. You can request everything from sizzers to bandaids free

Just got looking you need diaper pins and cloth diapers. Multiple uses in one. Great for the lady's each month, as diapers ofcorse also clean ones make great for sewing thread you can splinter apart and doubles as large injury coverage till better can happen. I just got with a family of 4 and we are doing the main garden at my house. She don't have enuff yard for the garden she needs and I have the yard but my body don't like me no more so need help with a garden. My husband and I figure if shtf, we will go down with the house. We are getting way to old to move around. So we decided not only to prepare for us and then extra. So like this family of 4 they are good at baking. If I bake we.will starve! But I do can everything under the sun. Good ideas about the get together. Would be good to try it here. We are a real small community and most of us all prep and don't tell each other

Watching her stuff WHOLE lemon balm plants in that bucket, knowing she was making a tincture, gave me so much anxiety. (I needed some lemon balm to get through it!🤣) Anything that isn't submerged in vodka, will mildew and rot, and destroy your entire tincture. So if you've watched this video and plan on making your own tincture, please make sure your plant matter is uniform enough to be fully submerged in your alcohol. (100 proof is best, as it will extract both alcohol-soluble and water-soluble compounds from your plant.)🙏

Is there other alcohol that can be used or maybe an oil?
@thetravelinghomesteader658
@thetravelinghomesteader658 4 месяца назад
Good question! As far as I know you can use a carrier oil of your choice like olive oil or coconut oil, but then it would be an infused oil rather than a tincture. But you may be able to use another clear alcohol but I’ve not tried another as of yet.
@RockKnocker17
@RockKnocker17 3 месяца назад
Any alcohol can be used, but you cant drink isopropyl(rubbing) alcohol. I think vegetable glycerin can be used also but dont take my word for it. Any liquor can be used for tinctures, rum, gin, whiskey.... a whiskey lavender tincture sounds really good,,, my next aftershave???

Not sure where you are but when you over winter bees you should have insulation on the top minimally. my guess it got cold enough so that water started condensing on the top of the hive and rained down on the bees killing them.
@thetravelinghomesteader658
@thetravelinghomesteader658 6 месяцев назад
I live in Oregon. I did have a layer of wool insulation in a pillow case as had been recommended. But as I have read, some standard beehives are thinner wood than others, so I had been thinking on making my own with slightly thicker plywood.

It hid my notices that you posted. Happy see ya back. We have a bee farm behind us. What on earth would they give them that smells like straight sewage? It's mainly only in the spring when the bees get delivered. I know here in upper North Dakota they have to ship them out and back in each season. But there has been steady trucks rolling in daily getting loaded.
