Sorry have to disagree. This should be a reading progression. As a Lb you have a gap responsibility. With that being said you single step with the direction of the nearest back to you and proceed to read the guard to that side and pursuit in an angle if the play moves away from you. The purpose of a defense scheme is to get as many defenders possible to the point of attack: which happens to be where the ball carrier is at or a spot he is moving towards! Taking three players out of the play, by having them rush into nothing but air does not seem logical espescially when football is regarded as a game of numbers. I understand at this level you want to keep it simple and dumb it down to a certain degree. But keep in mind fundamentals ought to be taught right as they should become patterns and than habits or instincts. Teach these kids something for four years and than let them advance to a higher level of play, only to learn that they have to develop a whole new feel for the game from scratch. With this concept of downhill play, the kids won't be able to process to a state, where the plays become slower as they are reading and running through their progression. The end game is the triangle where you're peripheral view, is able to detect and read the offensive backfield center and and guard to either side at whole.
Lol wow this brought back memories to my high school days, I played wlb in a 3-4 defense and I went with my keys pretty much every single play especially because in the 80s teams were primarly run heavy offenses.
Coach, I know it’s been a few years but thank you for this content. Running this 3-5-3 defense with a mid school program for the first time. My question for you is, your dog backers don’t always fill the gaps during pinch. Do you have them read the line for a key before going? A lot of inexperience on our team. I almost want to just fill all gaps but hate to lose backside if they do go. What’s your take? Thanks coach!
First I love the idea of the 6-4 formation, we run a 5-5 formation on our semi pro team, only thing I’d say you could change is, when you noticed them coming off the line, they weren’t all in sync on getting downfield, my thought is if you’d take your 3rd guys on each side, have them pull and circle out around the outside guys and collapse that outer edge so it takes away the sideline for the return if he decides to cut it outside or back across the other side of the field
Very impressed by how recessed your OL is, barely legal! Does that help the influence by giving the defense more time to read, or hinder it by reducing the pressure on them to read quickly? I'm thinking mainly about the direct influence of the OL on the DL in front of them; I think the LB see the same thing regardless of how deep your OL is lined up. I coach children and wonder how susceptible they are to influence at that age and experience level. Like, to hook the end, should I teach influence as the standard technique, or just have them go for the outside hip and teach influence only as a secondary technique against the better players?
When I played, we used a 52 Monster defense. We later on went to a 4-3 but when we shifted to our over and under fronts or eagle front, we brought our strong safety down as a Monster. We slant away from the Monster because most Teams want to run away from numbers. So we basically were forcing the offense to choose to run into our numbers or fall for our trap by running into our slant or stunt to the boundary.
What do you call this formation. Ive seen it called many things looking for something definitive. I’d rather follow basic verbiage concerning formations rather than make my own up. 2x2 with a sniffer. 3x1 with a sniffer.
Great stuff Coach. I love the combination of theory behind why you do this with very specific examples of technique refinement. I'm a rugby coach, and I will be starting to use my GoPro at training next week!
another question I have is having personal constantly flipping to the strong side, how well does that go against hurry up offenses 🤔 Thinking out loud, I'd probably have the striker go to field side if the formation is 12 and balanced, or to the slot/ double TE side. The philosophy at LB almost reminds me of some 34 schemes where one inside LB is a big body LB and the second is a smaller, sideline to sideline type of player. I'm wanting to get into coaching and I've been looking at the 4-2-5 defense but also wanting to mix in some 3-4 concepts as well. a hybrid defense if you will. kinda like the Midshipmen defense.
coach this is an excellent teaching video i greatly appreciate your time and teaching for this video! thanks again! OL coach (chris palmer) howard high school chattanooga ,tn
Should be sure the LBs reassert behind the blocker, keeps from creating another alley while filling one, also doesnt let the blocker get a 2nd chance at you if within the tackle box. Dug it otherwise...
so this football team name is deffently a play of michigan wolverines with the big block M , the BIG copying the B10 and then blue as in lets go blue...........and this is a team in illinois im not saying its a bad thing by no means its really cute and flattering but you would thank they would do a play off of Fighting Illini instead of Michigan just saying
Coach my school is going from 8-man to 11-man do you have the complete def playbook on the 3-3 stack. I can trade some stuff with you on 8-man. let me know thanks and I really appreciate your video's.
my suggestion is to go to an 8 lane KO coverage! spread them all the way across the field. WE go 5 on each side of the kicker. You have to think these are HS school kids, they are going to run straight, so take that put your faster guys on the outside ( from left to right) numbers 3-k-7 are your deep guys in case one breaks. keep doing your avoid drills, and tell NOW to keep the ball on the INSIDE shoulder. IT also seems from the clips that you showed, EFFORT wasn't there. HAMMER HOME that special teams plays are not plays OFF. I HOPE this helps!
2:59 Front Shoulder Intentions of QB! Very good key. Also I'd have BC or FC be on high alert for the speed out of #2 (if they're on the boundary side & #2 receiver is in slot formation off the ball. Reasoning only Elite QBs can throw the out to the Field Side with velocity and accuracy*.
Ive got my kids running these stunts and its shut down 6 teams weve played that we held at zero points out of our 9 games played thus far. weve held 1 team to 6 points, another to 12 and weve lost a game before i taught my kids these stunts. Now get this, Im talking about youth football (10U) and our base defense is a 4-2-5 . We lost our first game of the season to a team who had not lost a game in two years now. Told them we will see them at the top after that game and damit we are almost there with a 8-1 record. Stay tuned for the news win, lose, or draw.
