Great vid, and well informed. I believe the biggest issue with afl cards is the demand isn’t there compared to like basketball or baseball ect. Using that Zorko as a hypothetical, that card was made in 2017 were he was already a 2x B&F winner, so it would’ve had some major stock value if it was an American big 4 sports card, he would go on to win an all Australian and a 3rd B&F that year which would’ve sent it to the moon. Fast forward to when this video was released, he’s a 5x B&F winner, All Australian, Captain of the lions, and they are flying and played finals the last few years, if this was a basketball card no way it would be given away on RU-vid. Fast forward to 2022 and Dayne has an infield incident with Harry Petty, and he gets some major heat as his character has been drag through the mud, if he was a basketball player that card could’ve been worth 100s of dollars too not being able to give it away in 24 hours. Unless ya pull a goat like Dusty, most modern day cards won’t see value for many years, but this is a hobby ment to be enjoyed like you said. Also, a Dusty card will be printed on the same material as any scrub players card, so there isn’t any actual $ value difference per card, just hype from what’s printed on each card.
At CGA it’s roughly $20 per card all up. For value-add it really depends on what card it is and what grade it gets, some cards are a slam dunk (e.g dusty base/insert rookie 10s) and others won’t make up the grading fee (e.g betts diecut 8.5). Great question and would prob need a full video to go through in detail
What a great start to the season! Was hoping my Melbourne lads could start 3-0 but 1 loss is still ok! I love the Melbourne Football Club and have been a fan for a very long time. Possibly the longest time. I would say that no one is a bigger fan that I am. I hope all of their cards go to the moon because I own all of them! Every single copy!
Oh m8 , I wonder if their are enough similarities to compare Footy Card markets to game cards like Pokémon and Yugioh to name a few. Please Remeber I have multiple blue eyes white dragons in my possession . Perhaps I could trade you for one of them . These things are sweet as . Another great vid as always , stay gold pony boy ❤
Glad to see Gary made it to number one . That ol bald head ahh mother trucker . They say he would polish that dome piece before every game to blind the other team , dude would absolutely dust that duster Dusty . Great vid as always m8 I hope to see more videos of cards from your own collection in the future . Cheers
It's been a while since Ive put on some good old Gary Ablett Jr highlights. I think ill watch some now! In my ranking I might switch numbers 7 and 8 but its a very close comp and I understand why you put them where you did. Always fun to debate where these all time greats rank among one another!
Would have been reasonable to mention forum groups and dedicated traders who help people get their cards each year. There is a lot of greed in the hobby and these trading groups people do a great job every series contacting their people and get very little thanks. It is time consuming as well as expensive.
I was actually hoping you would make a video comparing the different kinds of collectible markets. Another really great upload. One point that I think you maybe forgot to consider is that the NBA card market has Lebron James cards. As you may know Lebron is a very large man and therefore he is cool and good. It is for that reason I think the NBA card market is the best one. But to each their own!
Does this have to do solely with the popularity of the major american sports or is it about how the AFL governance decides to manage licensing for card manufacturers? I.e. will the variety of rookie cards for AFL to increase as the sport grows the same way the NBA has or does it appear the card manufacturers/the AFL would limit the number of them? -Jim
Bit of a mix I’d say, popularity/demand makes up a portion but there’s also just a culture of overproduction for american sports cards. Interesting point about AFL licensing, it may be that they are stricter than the US in that way. There is only 1 main AFL card manufacturer vs. a bunch of US ones which makes a difference. The variety will and should increase as the AFL hobby grows but hopefully they decide to keep a tight leash
Yeah, interesting to see also what the AFL does in response to the MLBs long history of licensing between different brands. In any case, having one main manufacturer now just emphasizes more stability in the AFL cars market. Great vid as always. Jim
Thank you so much for your insight, makes a lot of sense. Great Vid, keep up the great work and happy hunting. I’m a collector of afl cards also, predominantly AFL but also cricket when the big bash is on & UFC. Any chance would you know when Select release their cards in 2023?? Can’t wait
Thanks mate appreciate the support, big fan of cricket also but haven’t got into the cards yet. Select’s first release should be March-ish then a new one every couple months after that
WOW! A great vid to start 2023! I really liked your insight into the market for modern rookie cards. Awesome stuff! Hope you can get that loud heater fixed. That's gotta be a royal pain in the tuckus!
Amazing work and analysis. If I ever meet you in real like I’m buying you a beer shot combo and monster-ella sticks at my favorite Checkers . Keep up the amazing job !!!
How ya going DTV Collectibles , I am your 100th subscriber. I’d like to say you have the knowledge and the passion for this topic like no other I have seen in this field and I’ve been following AFL cards for give or take 30 minutes. In my card collection I currently have MULTIPLE Blue Eyes White Dragons, so I’m no stranger to having cards that are excellent conversation starters at bars. I am also a die hard Western Bulldog-er because my friend has a shirt of them and they are the only team I know exists. My question for you is if , in your opinion, the current Footy Card market is going in a positive or negative trend based on what you’ve seen with the new releases compared to past years? Do you think the positives changes out weigh the negatives overall in the long run? Since you have seen multiple Select Supremacy releases I’m interested to hear what your outlook is for the future releases of Selects and other Footy Cards in general! Keep up the great work, I look forward to your 10 week recap ! Cheers 😃 👍
Hahaha very impressed with your insights already. To show my appreciation for you being Subscriber 100 I will answer your questions at length: 1. I think the footy card market is going in a positive trend in regards to the quality of releases and the number of participants we are seeing, especially compared to pre-pandemic levels. Even in these bad economic times, every new release sells out and resells for a higher amount. This never used to happen to the old releases, and shows that there is high interest despite the fact that many cards have dropped in value over the past year. Cards dropping in value is a natural part of the cycle and the vast majority of cards that have dropped were extremely overvalued in my opinion. Key superstar rookie cards have rarely dropped in value and some have increased significantly during this same time period, and some new cards are setting price records also. 2. Yes, I think the positives definitely outweigh the negatives in these new releases. The negatives are that there is a higher volume of cards which means each specific card is more prone to dropping in price, and that releases are more expensive and harder to get nowadays. A positive is that there is a greater selection of cards, especially rookie cards, that will serve to grow the hobby for years to come. It would have been cool if Select did this earlier so there would be a larger and more liquid market on rookies from 2000-2016. In saying that it'd be a huge mistake to over-produce cards and make them all worth hardly anything, and hopefully Select doesn't go crazy with it. 3. My outlook is good, assuming that people don't expect to double their money every time a new release drops. There will come a time that a release no longer resells, but that doesn't mean footy cards will die, the market will just adapt. For example I expect that prices on new cards may come down to a point where it makes sense to speculate on new rookies, which I think will be very healthy for the hobby as speculation on new cards has been almost impossible with the high initial prices over the past couple of years. Best, Daniel
Thank for the reply , even though I am new on the topic, I find your depth of knowledge fascinating and I’m happy to hear that the future looks bright ! I’ll see you in the next video !
I like the idea of rookie patches, obviously been around for a while in NBA cards. You reckon it would matter that a lot of them wouldn't be game worn as they dont all play games in their first year? I reckon a "First round patch series" where they use the jumpers given to the draftees on draft night would be cool
That’s a good point, I think as long as it was clearly described on the card it’d be alright. Game worn for the players that played, otherwise event worn like you mention or even practice/reserves worn.
Great video as always! I’m currently chasing a couple of Optimum 2022 DPS cards and it seems that once sellers are done with auctioning cards, the remaining cards are priced significantly higher once supplies dry up. Have you noticed this? For example a Josh Ward copper might have sold for $50-60 four weeks ago but those remaining are priced at over $150. Is this a trend each year? As in, the best time to buy a card is maybe 4 weeks after the release, when hype dies down but there’s still supply?
Thanks mate! Great question, this is definitely a thing once people start selling through their stock. However if you wait 3, 6, 12 months one will likely pop up for that price or cheaper (assuming the player doesn’t break out). It depends on whether you want the card now or are happy to wait. In this specific case it may have been best to buy it at $50 as the floor probably won’t be lower than $30. So the extra 6 months searching prob isn’t worth the $20, plus there is a chance that he breaks out
price are still new release hype price. so they come down. lot of those great players high numbered. and less people were in hobby then. daicos plat to 40 if he becomes half decent player it be hard to pick one up. also every year there hype up first year player. remember last year everyone was over nik cox. plus the card will have dusty effect at moment where people if they pull it and not there club, won't be as fast moving the card on. or at reasonable price.
All good reasons for why the price is high. I think the /40 element is a bit of a trap, the rarity means something long term only if the underlying player value is there
Jeez, you'd be pretty off it that Poulter got delisted a few days ago 😬great vid man, would be interested to know if there was a way to get data out of facebook from all the sales on forums etc.. but i guess they're more in the business collecting data rather than giving it away 😂
Haha I didn’t even hear about that! That’s always the risk with unproven prospects. Thanks mate, would be great to get some data from facebook as a lotta sales go down on there. Very hard to substantiate private sales though
