It isn't widely mentioned, but note that Southgate was going to bring on Trippier and Gallagher before the winning goal was scored in the 88th minute. As in, he was content sitting back and possibly taking this to penalties again. Just like vs Italy in 2021. Just like vs Croatia in 2018. That just sums up his mentality as a manager. Afraid to be bold. Afraid to take risks. Got here because of his players individual magic. He has definitely gotten rid of the toxic culture that existed during the Golden Generation but at the end of the day, he is not a top tactician and does not deserve to be a champion.
Hey mate I know this is 3y old but wanted to comment. I know low block is typically more narrow and compact, while a high press is often more wide. Can I stay wide in a low or even mid block to maximize the space for when I do end up winning the ball? Want to isolate one of my strikers/wingers since I think I’m favorable in the 1 on 1, just wondering if this really contradicts my stand back approach from a low/mid block to be so wide
Great insights. What I do not understand is why in possession, England lacks deep run behind Spain's defensive line. The situation only changed until 60th minutes after Watkins was on. The English side would have been more threating.
Literally ever manager that has managed Kane: alright he lacks pace and a threat in behind but is a wonderful passer and poacher. Play him with a direct runner to optimize the attack. (Son, prime Dele, Lucas, Sterling, Rashford) Gareth Southgate, 2024: Nahhh let's have Foden and Bellingham take turns as the #10 and Saka hug the touchline wanting the ball to feet.
Great analysis. Sometime it’s not about the formation it’s about the players decision and football intelligence. On paper England outnumber Spain in Midfield with a a box midfield[Rice, Mainoo, Foden & Bellingham]. But some how this didn’t turn out to be an advantage. Little movements - made the difference. Well done Spain
Netherlands were too passive england literally passing through them. Spain aint doing that. The England CBs really have to be comfortable playing under intense pressure. I think they are especially gonna target Rice who's really not comfortable playing with his back to goal. I predict england going long a lot of the time. Spain favorites for me.
Very confusing. With the Eng Ned graphic and the cursor here there and everywhere but talking about Spain England! It was correct in showing Kane stationary throughout - let’s hope he’s stationary on the bench on Sunday
Germans are great at roughness pressure but it does nothing against a team tht is better balanced and tht plays better like spain. Spain outplayed germany. Germany were hitting shot hard at nothing while spain easily outscored them
I said it here first.portugal would have ben the only team realy possible to beat spain. They had the strongest defence and played well each time but ronaldo did not help up front at all and ruined their game
@LeicesterTradCatholic portugal was amazing to if they had a beter center forward. Im not saying ronaldo is awful either.he just needs to play deeper in midfield and help out because he is useless ij the box
Whichever team has the bigger hearts will win. For England, Southgate might keep a few in his locker, like we have always known his defender mindset. Shame on him and it is despite of Southgate, England somehow managed to reach the Final.
Like virtually every one of theses analysis's from "experts" they never discuss the human aspect. Spain on paper might well edge it but England have shown they have got very big kahoonas and we have not seen Spain really have to show theirs yet. We shall see...
Wtf are you talking about? Being down against France? Beating home team Germany (that had played well in the group)? And you talk about kahoonas for barely beating Slovakia? lol...
@@ModernFootballAnalyst well how do you explain yesterdays penalty + Dutch momentum break through ref incorrectly giving a free kick for Gakpo taking the ball of Mainoo. How about the yellow for van dijk instead of not giving a penalty and not even a corner. It’s blatantly obvious if you remember that this is a billion dollar industry and matchfixing is unfortunately something that is possible in football
@@arno9233 The ref and the VAR are french, I am not sure how that is can be a good UEFA decision knowing the last Spain game and also the rivalry between Spain and France, but maybe im just getting crazy and nothing happens, or maybe the french also want England to lose, is who knows hahahhaha
@@arno9233I just hope it's not held against England. The ref was suspended for 6 months for being bribed and being an assistant for another ref who was match fixing. Apparently he was the one that whistleblowed it and that's why he's been trusted with big games like this. But I don't know what to believe and it's still very suspicious. Bellingham had called out this ref before and got in trouble for it. English fans were worried about this ref and it turns out he decided to be unfairly biased towards us instead of against us.
I love to hear Americans talk about football. I don't know if it's just the accent but they view football in a different way than the Europeans and they almost have to know what they are talking about because of the terrible reputation that Americans have in the football world which means they won't get the benefit of the doubt.
Thanks for listening I lived in Europe for a while so I’m happy to have gotten to experience everything first hand and not just talk about something I’ve never experienced in person
Very good analysis! Clear and slow paced commentary supported by illustrative images. Question: which software did you use to add shapes and other elements?
It’s debatable but England were lucky with that penalty. And not scoring an open play goal till the very last second. Spain have been playing like England have in the first half against the Dutch for the whole tournament. I don’t like playing what if, since it’s a sport and anything can happen. But Spain to me are the winners.
The biggest problem half of 1st 11 is not performing at all. Defender holding ball 2 long n not going forward every time their got d ball. Folden n Saka not performing d last match.
Problem with the team is we are really attacking with no balance in an attacking formation sitting so deep down our midfield is in the defensive area. Southgate doesn’t have a plan B if England are losing that’s the problem.
Gareth Southgate Tactical Analysis. When did Southgate ever have tactical insight? Bemoans failings of the team, yet has picked virtually the same players over & over again despite the line up not functioning. He's a footballing coward whose priority is not lose a match rather than being set up to win it. Hence why England always fail because we're not Italians & don't have the requisite skills to close out a game with staunch defending. Last night's rear guard action reminded me of the keystone cops. The Spanish would stroll past our defence at will.
bro are you slow in your head? im falling aswell watching this video. I wish i would have the patience to learn here but you boring and slow as hell :(
@@ModernFootballAnalyst I actually can’t watch anymore, in fact I’ve turned over to watch the F1 for me it’s all over as regards the football, I’ll probably watch the final, but despite trying to be positive despite all the negative stuff about the team that’s gone before, I really wanted England 🏴 to come out and give it the beans and as I’m sure so many of the fans are feeling now, it’s just rubbish to watch the team try to play they have not a snowball’s chance in hell of any future progress in this tournament, and I’m dumbstruck for any thing to say that is positive about this squad, it’s the manager it’s the team it’s the whole bloody lot and tomorrow as is usual, those little England flags people have on their cars, are all going to be in the gutter like the England 🏴 hopes and aspirations, let’s face it, who, do we really, think we are!!
England have had success in the past using two out and out wingers, getting plenty of crosses into the box for Kane and others to finish. Southgate dropped Rashford and Grealish who fulfilled that role on the left, and replaced them with Gordon and Palmer, but hasn't started either player , for some strange reason. As a result , England have had no threat from the left wing, and scoring chances have dried up. The defence has been sound, but the attack has been woeful.
they didn’t look knackered when they were sprinting to celebrate their goals😂 it’s all mindset and it comes from the manager and leaders on this pitch. southgate doesn’t inspire and neither does kane, he shouldn’t be captain. really the captain should be bellingham because he’s the only player that is fearless.
this is great analysis and something that so many other pundits and analysts don't pick up on enough. it really demonstrates how static we are and lack any kind of movement. but this isn't really new, it's been like this for as long as I can remember. there's this obsession in England about 'keeping width' as if they just should all stay in the position on the teamsheet (as if having players in close proximity is a bad thing) and actually the focus should be on the momevement, as you highlight. when people do think about the movement it's so often simply about 'getting in behind' teams in the context of direct/long passes, rather than using it to stretch teams, or working short passes with lots' of quicker movments to get in behind. I'd quite like to see Foden, Palmer and Mainoo all playing together, I think those 3 in particular all look like they want to be on the move all the time and have the technical ability and understanding to work off each other well and move the ball quickly in tight spaces.
interesting that you picked out Bellingham for making those channel runs beyond Kane and the defensive line. I feel like that's something he hasn't done anywhere near enough of. I'd be intersted to see some stats on that.
