I wish the SF Fillmore show was up here. It was incredible. Thank you for posting this. It’s the first I’ve ever seen of Prince with Tamar since that night. ❤️

Of course, The Roots are smoking, and Princess is holding down the pocket on the vocals. It's always interesting to see different folks' interpretations of Prince's work. I like this because they are anchored (remain true) to the original groove but are finding subtle places to inject their fun and style. We are not watching someone do an impersonation of Prince, and we are not watching someone try to project their aesthetic onto Prince. There's this happy medium or navigation between what the band and singers love about Prince and how they hear and feel Prince as opposed to how others hear and feel Prince. Because of this, we get the pleasure of awesome talent combined with sheer love to produce an ecstatic moment of purple enjoyment. Thanks for sharing!
This is one of the very rare cases in which I love another artist's version of a song equally as Prince's. Prince's version is a study of holding tension and finding pleasure in the anticipation of the thing, whereas Warfield's version is an experience in the release of tension to be engulfed in the actual pleasure of the thing. Further, it seems that the two versions reverse the gender roles. Often, males are more inclined to indulge in their desires whereas females are taught/required to be more reserved in their physical desire. Yet, Prince and Warfield have created a sonic and emotive dance in which the roles of lovers can be liquid and shifting as needed by the lovers and not limited by any arbitrary rules that society imposes on individuals and their romantic practices. In short, after Prince teases and stimulates the listener with the tension of anticipation, Warfield opens herself, literally and metaphorically, to give us all of the passion to create a wonderful bookend or full circle moment of desire.
