How is 5 groups of 3 less complicated than 3 groups of 5? If either one is more complicated, its the one that requires you to use your pen and arithmetic more. There's an episode of iCarly where Carly has to help someone with math homework, and she makes up a "new" number, between 6 and 7, and goes through the effort of teaching it and reassuring it to who she's babysittinf or tutorinf or whatever. Just so he fails his test. When I was a kid I taught myself addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions etc etc all by a system of 3's based on the knuckles on my hand, and rhythms from the music i heard as a kid. I already knew English words for numbers so it was easy to translate it into a base-10 answer for tests and projects. Now its second nature, but I have my own names for the base 3 numbers up to the thousands, its no less mathmatically true. This gives me the same vibes as "dont speak your home language in school". What? Why? So only the adult from a different culture who learned my language wrong gets to speak it, when theyre teaching it to me? Get lost colonizer.

What this actually does is set kids up to have a poorer understanding of multiplication and its properties. They are essentially telling kids that the commutative property doesn't exist, which is one of the most important things to understand in math. lmao
This common core is really handicapping our students. I’m a retired engineer who has worked with many levels of engineering math. The common core is silly.
Now I understand why in videos where kids are asked basic addition and multiplication questions, they end up getting it wrong. They're being taught this common core BS that confuses them and they second guess what the answer should be. Kids nowadays are being gaslight into providing dumb answers.
Put another human being in the line of danger to protect others. Makes total sense. A Crossing Guard is a human traffic light. Motorists are extremely rude and disrespectful.
Who ever came up with this common core bs is responsible for kids being dumb as hell in math. How are they suppose to know how to solve geometry or calculus??? Also what about ACT or SAT test?? You do know those test are timed so kids have to draw boxes and what not for 10 min to solve a problem?
I can still remember 2nd grade 20+ years ago. "What's 5 minus 8?" "Negative 3" "No it's 0, don't jump ahead like that" I wasn't smart at all mind you, I was just exposed to slightly more advanced mathematical concepts ahead of schedule because I was playing a lot of videogames. Turns out that if you give a kindergartener Mario Party they can figure out single digit multiplication pretty fast
Me who was just briefly mentioned to that multiplication is repeated addition, and then memorized the multiplication table in 1st grade. Essentially, never taught to show work for this and was meant to just “know” it without thinking… Instead of going through all this technical, grammatical whatever the heck this is….
So. You don't know the difference between 3's and 5's. Because they are numbers. And make different combinations. 5 3's, may not fit in the same place 3 5's may be made for. Yes. Numbers are Things TOO. And certain Things, go together in certain Ways. Hopefully you'll find that out , the easy way 👍 , you got this
wait till you get to multiplication of double digit numbers. they dont do cross multiplying anymore its crazy my son had a problem I answered it with cross multiplying he said that is the easiest and fastest wy he's had learned to do this , he then showed "new " math common core way of doing it and it was so convoluted and confusing that it took 3 times longer to answer the question.
The first explanation is just as valid given the commutative property, which they also teach in common core. Another case of the teacher only having a superficial understanding of what they're teaching.
To me; it seems that Common core is more concerned with rewiring the way the the kids think, more than arriving at the right answers. The only reason i could see them marking an answer wrong when it's right, simply based on the method they used to arrive at the correct answer is; to make sure the kids are more focused on following the directions of authority, and less focus on being correct.
Mathematics is a language, like any other language. 5 x 3 can be interpreted in 2 ways. 5 of 3 or 5 replicated 3 times. One must make it exact. In essence, both are wrong. Numbers are adjectives, not nouns. You cannot add adjectives. I ate 5 apples 3 times. I ate 3 apples 5 times. You have to say so to be exact, in the English language and not in a mathematical language. 5 x 3 has no sense in English.
