Listening to America (previously the Thomas Jefferson Hour) is an educational and journalistic initiative dedicated to helping Americans better understand one another through exploring our shared past and collective present.

Led by noted historian and humanities scholar Clay Jenkinson, Listening to America travels the country’s less visited byways, from national parks and forests to historic sites to countless under-recognized rural and urban places. Through this exploration, Clay and team find and tell the overlooked historical and contemporary stories that shape America’s people and places. Stories about the future of family farms and agriculture, the water crisis in the West, the changing nature of work, the decline of rural America and more.

I listened to this podcast Aug. 25 via Prairie Public Radio. For the first 45 minutes I was willing to "hear" and "consider" the viewpoints of the "other side." But the interview with Mr. Stern from my perspective left the rails when once again the political middle finger was flipped at those of us with a conservative viewpoint and are backing Trump. I get it that MTG is a lightning rod for the Left; I don't support everything she says. But the Left has its lightning rods: Ilan Omar, AOC, Maxine Waters, to name a few. Waters has gone so far as to "incite" her supporters to physically confront conservatives. And yet, there are no admonishments from more thoughtful progressives. There is great criticism of Trump not being civil; where is the progressive's civility? One last point, Jenkinson contends that behind closed doors conservatives like Rubio embrace more moderate positions. I say that also applies to progressives. So long as neither side is publicly willing to advocate "middle of the road" without fear of repercussion we will remain polarized. Unfortunately, that is how it has always been since Day One.

You know, it's easy to say Jefferson flippped, but how about what the Federalists did? Under Hamilton's guidance they were deliberately trying to start a war against France. I think given that, thtat Jefferson was entitled to change his mind.

I wonder out loud if a movement back towards the Fairness Docterin would be a good place to start making us all feel better about America? That could be the first ground roots movement to get us going.

Teaching Jeffersonian thinking is lopsided unless it's combined with Adam's federalism and Washington's public minded stoicism. We need all three perspectives to make government work. The right answers to ethical government are found by abductive logic answering the question, "what do these perspectives agree on?". The answers have uncertainties but are bounded. They should include incremental improvements as we get wiser with experience. The above is exactly what Madison did. It's tragic that lawyers don't read the Constitution like a philosopher of ethics in government wrote it.

Just because one disagrees with the official version of the Kennedy assassination, doesn't make it a conspiracy theory. The preponderance of evidence points to multiple shooters. The Warren Report was so obviously a cover-up. Perhaps one needs to stick to the official version so that one's future books can continue to be published.

"we should allow people to sue the ammunition industry and gun industry" what a completely asinine and ridiculously foolish thing to say. Clay you are quite silly in this idea and I don't for one second believe you actually think this.
@Greenriver592

I agree with Mr. Jenkinson on this. I also think assault weapons should be banned entirely, and all other weapons and ammunition should be strictly regulated.

@@Greenriver592 "assault weapon" is a empty (fictional) term employed to generate a pre-determined response from the fearful and/or ignorant. Literally anything can be used as a weapon in the commission of an assault. There are claims of "verbal assault' for crying out loud. This terminology is not for serious or logical conversation. As for the overreaching regulations you desire, that is just complete ignorance and foolishness. To offer up such a claim is laughable in a world such as this. You wish to empower the criminal element while crippling the innocent out of some self righteous moral superiority that is despicable. This is not a full on socialist nation just yet, and God forbid it ever becomes fully lost.
@Greenriver592

@@robbyjohnson6241 You are just playing word games. An AR15 can fire at least 45 rounds per minute,. Add a bump stock to that, and you have a fully automatic machine gun. Growing up in the 50s and 60s, no one had these types of weapons, or wanted them. The vets returning from WW2 had seen enough carnage from these weapons, and many never hunted again because they couldn't see causing unnecessary pain and suffering to any creature. Well now, thanks to the gun manufacturers and the NRA , these guns have flooded our streets, and can be purchased by any unstable individual who wants to go out in ablaze of glory, and take half the people at Walmart with him. Many of these weapons make their way down to Mexico (were they are illegal) and have made the cartels almost unstoppable. Is this your idea of a well regulated militia? More than 43,000 people were killed by gun violence last year in the US. Think about how that would feel if a loved one went to the store, or to a concert, and was gunned down in a mass shooting. It is time to fix this problem and stop hiding behind a misinterpretation of the second amendment.

@@Greenriver592 there is zero data to support anything you've claimed here and the bulk of this diatribe is just fiction. Attempting to sell this argument under the broad term "gun violence" is quite comical. Do a little actual research and look at how the numbers are cooked on that data. As for the tired claim of "misinterpretation", this is the weakest claim of all. People who claim this simply want their way like a petulant child covering their little ears to avoid reality.

What are you talking about? This podcast wasn't pitched as some sort of solution to all the cultural issues. Take what they say as Gospel? The author of the book, Disorder...is a guest, on a show & the topic they're discussing with incredible civility is Disorder in America. It's presented as nothing more or less. Gospel? No. It's an invitation to consider all of our history, the mythology we heard and juxtapose those tropes with where we are culturally and where we could go if we were all willing to do the work.

Starting at 51:20, Don't make the mistake of "moral equivalence". The Indian was never noble, and the black never heroic. The Founding Father's always wanted to eliminate slavery, per the Constitutional passage to outlaw the international slave trade, and Jefferson's signing of the law into place in 1808.
