People seem to forget how much engine temperatures have on tbi's. Got a bad temp sensor on the intake, it'll flood the engine. You can actually control the afr's by changing the thermostat
Maybe it's just in the vid for comic relief . But surely thats not the air filter you're using ? Looks all packed up . And btw. Running an air filter open to the heat in the engine compartment is counter productive. But you knew that ;) . Still want to know what happened with the throttle body riser .
You are right this is not the optimal air filter to run on this truck. On my 454 I have the stock set up pulling air from the fender. I am working on the throttle body riser but have been busy with moving and school (Just started grad school). But I will be back with video updates with everything very soon!
Wouldn't the computers adjust the air/fuel mixture once it determines there's "too much air"? Or are these older trucks able to be modified in this way without a tune?
The computer has the ability to adjust long term and short term fuel trim. This particular modification helps reduce a choke point for the air that is before the valves. Therefore, we are not increasing the maximum amount of air available in the cylinder but when that maximum amount of air is available. The fuel trims will compensate for this but with any engine, maximum performance cannot be achieved without some kind of tuning. I appreciate the questions!
@@rustyroadtrips any difference i ask because I had to add it not because I wanted to and the injector spacer but I wish I could of added one at a time to feel a difference
@@joshup1275 I have done some CFD analysis on the injector spacers and those will allow more air to flow in a stock set up. You will gain benefit from this at higher RPM. The Salad bowl is suppose to promote air flow by removing 90 degree turns that the stock set up has. The one I made in this video was small and only reduced the angle slightly. If I was to spend the money on something it would be the Injector spacer. Let me know if you have any more questions!
@rustyroadtrips I made a mistake on putting 3 inch y that killed my low end but made it up on the top but I noticed a big difference with just the intake, tbi and injector spacer else was factory stock but I wish I could of added the tbi spacer then injector spacer to see if they did any difference to performance
that cheap spacer in the other video is convenient though for a van with about 360,000 miles to install, even if this thing on this video worked, dont think it would fit. I dont want to do much with my hightop conversion van, but it does have a bigger 2.5"-3" exhaust, catalytic convertor made for a 454, 3.73 gears, k&n air filter. That was 100,000 miles ago. My air filter is smaller than yours, with the paper one, I would give it the gas from a dead still stop, floor it and it would cut off, the K&N I mean wow that helped, you hear that wooing if you floor it in Overdrive by accident from all the air rushing in.
I start from 10mph because I had to pull out of my driveway and there is no good spot to stop in the road to start at zero. This was for safety not accuracy. Thanks for the comment!
The point of this test was mainly to see what affect the spacer had. Adding the new TBI was something I wanted to do because I had a rebuilt one laying around. I have done CFD on the intake assembly with and without the spacer installed and it does make a difference. The difference will not make this engine produce loads of power but the spacers are a cheap upgrade. Thanks for the feedback!
@@rustyroadtrips yeah people have much different views on the subject. One guy has a spacer that goes below it, not above, he claimed it did nothing after a dyno test, but his had only 166 HP... Some did say it depends on the upgrades. my g20van stock supposedly has 210hp 300ft-lb of torque. mine has a added 3"exhaust and a k&n air filter which made a huge difference.
If you really want your TBI throttle body to perform check out the Gagetman Groove. You will be amazed. Here are some links on youtube for you. I love mine. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-WXGj5QxkQJQ.html
By googling stage 1 chip for you vehicle you should be able to come up with some good results. I have heard some good things about jet chips and harris tuning if you want to look there first.
I don't know if the throttle body spacer does anything for air flow, but what I did discover is that it pulls the throttle cable back through the fire wall, thus giving you more throttle response at a mechanical level.
What I noted with these spacers, the throttle body sitting higher, the throttle, cruise control and transmission cables had to be raised a ½ inch. Two half-inch spacers were added with longer bolts for the bracket that holds the cables. I never had seen anyone who has had to do this.
What do you mean youve never seen someone who had to do it? You just listed a few things that had to be done to compensate then stated they never had to be done
Man you did a good video. Can you do a video on the wiring going to the cruise control. My cruise control works then it want work. Trying to figure out what wires are hot(12v) all the time when ignition is turned on and what what wires get hot(12v) when you push button in to set the cruise and what wires are hot(12v) when pressing the brake?
I did this, not certain if the OEM air cleaner will fit under the hood but I had two new fuel injectors saved from 2015 I don;t remember buying so strange. But my truck acts like 100 more horsepower, might not be just because of the spacers alone the fact it may have had wrong injectors for a 350, Firestone put in one used fuel injector, who knows if it was for a 454 big block I have no clue. But it paid to install these spacers.
Do you have to readjust the TV cable and the other linkages if you put a TBI spacer on? In theory could you just stack up a few injector pod gaskets and get the same height as the aftermarket spacer?
I did not get to test the Throttle Body Spacer as it melted. I have some new designs and materials that I am working with and hopefully will be able to test a prototype soon. I would imagine that the TV cable would need to be adjusted but idk about the throttle cable. In theory with enough gaskets you can space the injector pod up, but I think you would end up spending the same amount of money as the the aftermarket unless you have extra gaskets. Thanks for the comment!
I had a signifigant WOT power gain using a 1" open center spacer, 454 TBI unit and 454 air cleaner that uses power bowl rather than that spacer that shrouds the TBI inlet. I had a 3704 manifold bored to 2" at the time.
I like the idea! My current issue with that is the fuel lines run through the housing. The larger the spacer the closer the fuel lines get to colliding with the housing. The current spacer is designed to be as large as possible without colliding the fuel lines. I am working on some ideas to work around that but development has been slow but stay tuned for what I come up with!
Hi, I have a 1994 3/4 4×4 7.4 liter , all original including brakes. This thing burns gas, too much! The breaking is inadiquate and the book in the tire section says to not exceed 120 kms. That is about 65 mph. I live in Alberta, between Calgary and Edmonton people are rolling 130. I am using about 8 to10 miles per gallon. The distance is 185 miles. I haven't driven it any distance and have a small car to go on that trip, because of costs. However I am going to need my knees replaced and the car won't work. So the pickup has to be modified. Do you have parts numbers for the chip or any other parts listing I could use to get the truck to be a little safer and cheaper to run.
I love that youre trying new things with the TBI trucks. Most people just do the carb swap or insult you for not buying a vortec. Nobody has 'really' tried to push the tbi unit. You should try out doing an adjustable fuel pressure valve mod (i believe theres a video floating around how to do it.) On top of these things.
I would suggest getting the tbi spacer it’s lifts the injectors 1/4 giving you more space for air flow. The airaid cold air intake and throttle body spacer also work great in conjunction. I have all 3 on my 94 1500 and have improved performance and mpg.
@rusty, I have a '94 3/4 ton GMC Suburban with a 454. Would this Injector spacer give any help to my setup (original engine and tranny) but still keep it a towing beast?
@@rustyroadtrips That could definitely help on a 2" bore or larger TBI. The only TBI based engine I still own has the Edelbrock TBI to MPFI single plane intake and the TBI injectors with pod get removed entirely. It is on an aluminum headed 406 with 29 lb/hr injectors. Makes 150 HP more than the factory 320 hp 350 made. That TBI 350 was rather nice for a stock TBI engine. It had a 2" bore TBI, 46 lb/hr high pressure injectors with the 30 psi regulator good for ~ 80 lb/hr, GM 113 L98 aluminum heads and a GM 6395 roller cam. 50+ mph across the water turning 5,200 rpm. The 406 runs closer to 65 mph turning a lot more prop.
Try getting rid of that plastic ring and then making the two openings look like velocity stacks. I mean grind them down to be a smooth rounded edge to help the air flow into the opening.
I am not familiar with the 1996+ cruise control systems. I found cruise control to be a great upgrade for highway driving! I would look up a schematic for the 1997 cruise control system and see if you can source the parts to make it work. Hope this helps!
Could you help me with my 2-door silverado, I want to install the cruise control, it's also tbi and I have the CC module and its multifunction lever but I don't have the wiring
There’s a reason they make those spacers with aluminum and not plastic. 😉 I would use a spacer on these tbi engines for the mpg gain, you’re not really going to get much in the way of power on these. You can buy an aluminum spacers with all the hardware and gaskets for like $40.
With the aluminum spacer on the bottom works good and putting the injectors up higher works good and it dose help with horse power some there's a little difference
The cruise control stock on the column is different so that might be more effort to change out but the box on the fire wall should be the same as it is still a TBI.
Hi, If you are talking about the clip that holds the cable on that is here: www.summitracing.com/parts/rnb-90093?seid=srese1&gclid=Cj0KCQjwgMqSBhDCARIsAIIVN1W_vGLub2j3VXFcjsRS_apdZmQbVUzpFz26o5tAqMnjCbM-len5O-caAoN_EALw_wcB . If you are talking about the cruise control cable stud i did not find a specific part for that in my quick search but there are other throttle cable stud options or you can pick one up at a pick and pull near you. Thanks for the question and I hope my response helps!
Hey would you know since it's not letting me reply directly to the video, if this sort of a job would be possible on a suburban k 2500 with the 454? I'm not sure how similar the systems were between the 350 and the 454. I know they were pretty similar motors though
