Welcome to Doubleboost... home of my machining and metal casting shop and the famous Jet Powered Go Kart. Here you'll find in-depth project videos on casting, tempering, molding, welding, TIG welding, dividing heads, sand casting, milling, lathe work and thread cutting with aluminium, bronze and brass. Stick around and you'll get the occasional look at some amazing steam engines
We need another "Bob"repairs video. Nothing against you, John. I just like how you 2 guys play off of each other. The genuine comradery between you is great.
For a mechanic who is an amateur machinist that's not bad. I have picked up some outer threads and it's a buttock clencher the first few times you do it. As you say, no distractions while you are doing it. Haven't picked up an internal one yet but that will be even more "exciting". Self taught mechanic/machinist in Land Down Under.
Ahh Paddy Freemans! I used to run my boats (I had a remote control electric Tyne tug and a remote control sailing yacht) as a kid with my granda in the 80s and 90s!
To anyone sitting on the fence in regards to supporting John on patreon, Ive been happily supporting him since he started his patreon page. The quality and the amount of content he makes available cant be beaten. Id highly recommend doing it because you really are getting value for money, especially compared to other larger youtubers. Also hit the subscribe button its costs nothing.
@@doubleboost There are big gaps in the sound from about 6 minutes in at my end? It comes back at about 15 minutes, for me at least. then back on again at 17 minutes, it's very intermittent, some crackling and popping? Am I the only one? Just checked out the second video and that's perfect. There are still gaps in the sound also @ about the 7 to 8 minute mark

Hello John I learn how to use Dial Caliper as a kid and I do also have cheap digital one my father is a retired machinist and so he taught me how to use diffrent tools growing up .
Hi John , the burner coil must be 70+ years old so it needs some TLC to be stripped completely & then heated to dull cherry red & dropped into a citric acid solution , repeat 3 times at least & leave to soak over night in the acid , blow out with compressed air & you should be clear, a longer pre heat is needed for that big old coil too , if you keep a primus jet pricker handy it'll save a lot of heartache , swearing & cussing etc , still looking forward to roaring blue flames 😂
Excellent tutorial on the digital calipers. Back when these first became popular and readily available in the 1990’s I was a “makers man” for a leading marine equipment manufacturer. The digital callipers was my number one hate, not because there was anything wrong with the callipers it was that machine men in the shipyards tended to rely on the caliper that had been rattling around their back pocket or on the headstock rather that the calibrated tools available. Also as you touched on with the earlier models coolant affected the readings as it managed to work its way into the tool. There was also a lot of counterfeit digital callipers available in the local markets, these did not end of harm to the reputation of the genuine tools from the genuine manufacturers which sold at around five times the cost.
Hi john, I'm not sure if you know , but most blowlamps were paraffin but some were petrol ! Bloody lethal ! We used blowlamps regular up until the 60s , I'm not sure but i think yours may be a petrol one , Take care , enjoy your video's, Thank
Petrol itself has changed over the years. I have found old blowtorches with castings labeling them as for use with gasoline that won't run right without the addition of about ten percent ethanol. Without the addition they run as your torch did, a long white flame. With the addition, the short cone of flame is possible.
G'day John. I never had a burner like yours, but we did have a portable primus stove, which you pumped the pump, and you had a single burner to cook on. We would have a small metal strip with a fine wire on the end, to clean the Jet occasionally. Excellent video segment on measuring & how to use the calipers, but alternately the Micrometers are the correct tools for accuracy. Great video. Thanks Ted
Might be worth adding that there are two 'gib' screws that adjust the slider fit that need to be adjusted for accurate measurements, and it is important to get a consistent feel for the pressure used to take the measurement
Yeah, by the time that thing's lit (and not malfunctioning) I've got a $25 weed burner/roofing torch and 20lb bottle dragged out with the job half done.
