In nor cal we can shoot 1 northern pintail or 7 northern shovelers and that’s resulted in a good 65% of the birds in our area late season are either shovelers or pintails . 50% of people don’t shoot northern shovelers. But averages on refuges show people shoot more shovelers than pintails. Since so many people don’t shoot spoonys for no reason and the limit on sprig is 1 that’s resulting in us only having sprig and spoonys in our area. I dont see what peoples issues are with spoonys in the first place is though
I have a tattoo of a spoony for a reason. I really hate how under appreciated they are. There so beautiful and taste so good what’s wrong with them?? There might be more of em but all that means is more people get to eat and we control a species better. Y’all wonder why there’s so many spoonys it’s because no one a lot of people don’t shoot em so they can breed a lot more than mallards or anything else
I went fishing in Minnesota with a local once. He not only caught thirty to forty over his limit that day he said he was worried because his freezers - yes multiple - were already full of fish. I was disgusted. But we had a nice meal that night. Never talked with him again.
I'm from KY and I have to say, every "shot a cow, thought it was a deer" or "shot a goat and thought it was an albino deer" or "got caught packing a full block of salt to the stand" came from lease property owners leasing to dudes from MN. It's kind of uncanny.
We don’t have native green head mallards down here in FL. Just ones that get loose from golf courses. Those “mallard only” people would not have a good time down here😂
Could be anywhere. I've been trying to repopulate my creek with mallards but the hunters take EVERY SINGLE DUCK and then there's no ducks the following year. Who takes the last duck!?! Duck hunting has an education and culture problem.
I find 3” shot shells are etiquette enough for pretty much everything i hunt. Small ducks such as teal i shoots #5-6. Large ducks i shoot #4. Goose i shoot BB
North Dakota here. Out of state licenses are so expensive we're not getting the typical Minnesota hunter. We're getting the 'dentist with two weeks of vacation and a 5 bedroom house in the suburbs' hunters.
I watched this a few days ago, and something just really..... Got stuck in my head. Being able to produce more notes and becoming "gassed" seems completely ludicrous to me. If you are having to call that much and that long.... There's something wrong. Plus, calling, you can only be Heard a couple hundred yards by the birds. But trying to cut air usage when calling is really silly. You're assuming that everyone's lung capacity, throat diameter, etc are all the same AND everyone's calls take the same amount of air. I can guarantee that I can blow my buddies calls waaaaay longer with one breath than my own. Goose Rhythm and realism win. Now, before I get massacred by the masses, I've guided for over twenty years in the Midwest (including Rochester, MN) and was one of Fred Zinks first pro staff and was for over 22 years. No, I'm not just blowing smoke to stroke my ego.
65 ducks in 12 minutes/11 guns in SW Oklahoma for myself (winter wheat field with rainwater puddles at the lower end of the field, birds never left to get a drink)- gun barrels never cooled down, had the dog at heel because couldn’t pick them up fast enough…. Watched the birds come to the spread for the half hour after- 61 widgeons/4 mallards. Did that in 4 volleys. Geese showed up an hour later- had one group and shot 5. Called it a day, never realized that morning it was gonna be a memorable hunt.
I hunted from 1998 to 2003 every day of waterfowl season (public and private) in Western Minnesota. Never had one issue- really suprised to hear this.🤔 “Minnesota NICE” was what I encountered. Must be a new type of individual now hunting the Land of 10,000 Lakes.
