I'm learning programming and have some ideas for homm-like game featuring ideas from III and IV Basically for upgrades my biggest issue is that they were exactly that - once you get upg. Archers - there's literally only one case when you'd buy normal archers instead - if you have to buy out entire army so that an approaching enemy can't get it. What I would do instead is give each unit a feature. As an example for castle - archers vs crossbow guys. Archers deal less damage, but shoot twice. Maybe even at two separate targets if a hero has a specialty or whatever. Crossbow guys always shoot once, but deal much bigger damage and have lower range penalty. Then maybe there would also be musketeers who need an entire round to reload (basically you can shoot only every other round), but they deal crazy amounts of damage with no penalty at all for range and obstacles. Similar thing for swordsmen. Basic swordsmen are not very well protected, but because of that they can attack twice and move one-two cells further. Crusaders on the other hand are heavily armored, so they can't hit twice and they have shorter walk distance, but their shield allows them to respond to every attack (like griffins). These upgrades work just like normal upgrades (you need to build shooting range before you can upgrade it to produce crossbowmen), the only difference is that the creatures are no longer exclusively better. I'm not sure how to properly balance it, but I would also have banks for several unit tiers instead of per tier. All lvl 1-3 humans would be coming from one pool of 40-50 creatures for example. So you can have 50 archers if you can afford it (which you probably wouldn't be able to afford cuz they would require 1 wood to produce). This should also allow to make it easier to flush armies if you can't win, but don't want to let enemy buy better units. Just buy 50 peasants and that's it. A bonus idea - town specialty. You can either have "fort" or "capital" and that limits your options. "Capitals" can't build dwellings higher than lvl 3, but only these towns can build Capitol and some other unique structures for better income. While "forts" can't build past town hall, but have all dwellings available and unique defense structures. I think I would also make castles with "two gates" option so that they can work like a larger version of garrison. If there's nowhere to go behind the castle - you can disable it.
I really like, that there are no unit upgrades in H4. That way, you access all the functionalities of the units from the get go and you just gotta focus your strategy on building the correct ones. Developing towns doesn't take ages and you don't have to worry about neutral followers being the wrong version. If you resign from upgradeable units, then you would also save yourself half the time needed to animate the sprites. There are few features that make H4 unique in a good way, and I think this is one of them.
I really like the concept of no unit upgrades in Heroes 4, because its simple and puts value on the vanilla versions of the units. In H3 for example, it feels like half the value until you spend more turns and resources to reach the "real versions" of the units. However, I liked the way you formulated the paths of different choices. Subscribed.
We have quite a few wavelengths of the "living-unliving" spectrum in Heroes 3: -Black Dragon: Not artificial, has morale, counts -Crystal Dragon(+Giant?): Artificial, has morale, counts -Gargoyle: Artificial, has morale, doesn't count -Golem: Artificial, doesn't have morale, doesn't count -Elemental: ("Well-I-Don't-Know-About-Elemental-Lords")Not artificial, doesn't have morale, doesn't count
the sounds definitely need to be replaced. and why liches and priestesses have no spells? Liches should have curses and priestesses should have blessings.
"HUCK TÖÜGHG" and "SPIT ON THAT THÆNG" is CRAZY!!! Even the combined 3rd level Bloodfrenzy and 4th level Bersek Spell couldn't match that type of freak!!! 😠👹💀

So many times only a few genies left, casting song of piece for crossbowman or monks, who next decide to come closer and get massacred instead of waiting.
I was expecting that. Life is excellent but ORDER has every counter to EVERYTHING Haven. Haven shreds the offensive fractions but since Order can just sit on the back with powerful range power and excellent infantry (Golems who solo entire army it's dead due to range power), it's unwinnable.
