With an active performing and recording schedule, and a growing studio of students, Shawn Tairyu Head has dedicated himself to bringing the shakuhachi to new audiences around the world. While he embraces the traditional melodies of the ancient repertoire known as honkyoku, his classical conservatory training and Western spiritual perspective make him equally at home composing and commissioning new works that explore the unique sonic possibilities of the shakuhachi. As a performer, composer, and teacher, his goal is nothing less than a shakuhachi revival.
I'm late to watch, but thanks! That is a nice video! And I hope I can spend some more time in Japan at some point cause, yes, the tea is really something that you simply can't replace!
I’m on the trial Shoden and loving it 😊, actually getting ready to switch to the full Shoden lessons. I went in the Perks and noticed that I cannot upgrade, could it be because I haven’t been a member for a month yet? And when I subscribe to the full Shoden, shall I still be able to enrol in the giveaway (even though I already am a member)? Thank you! It’s fantastic to be able to learn like this.
Thank you so much for your comment. That's strange that you can't upgrade. I would go to the membership page and there should be an upgrade button. Then you can choose the full Shoden or Chuden etc. You don’t need to do anything else. All members are automatically entered in.
Ok I got it sorted. There seems to be an issue with the RU-vid app in iOS : no upgrade button. You actually have to go on the desktop version to find it(force it it you’re on tablet) and uninstall the RU-vid app for it to work. Temporary bug for sure, but in the meantime if someone else had the issue, here’s the fix 😅. So glad to be in the giveaway … it would be the perfect excuse to come pick it up in person. There’s a reasonable chance that I might be going in Autumn, starting from Tokyo then going North (3rd time in Japan - I’m hopelessly hooked).
@@audreyhermans8903 Oh RU-vid and Apple. When will their software stop the arguing with each other. Thank you for upgrading and continuing to support the channel. I am glad that I have infected you successfully with the Shakuhachi virus. I’ll be honest it only gets worse from here. But it’s wonderful to have somebody who’s enjoying and loving this instrument and to help it lasts for longer in the future. Hopefully chat GBT sensei will be in your favor!
Thanks for the great content! Unrelated, question, I’m just about to buy my first shakuhachi (I’ve already watched your video on it 😉). What tuning should it be? I understand D (1.8) is the “”standard”” but I would also love a E (1.6) to play Ghost of Tsushima’s songs. Is there any downside to any of them?
Great question. Let’s say you were going to join my membership and learn how to play shakuhachi for 5 bucks a month (shameless plug)🔌 you would need a 1.8. But let’s say you want want to play my version of ghost of Tsushima which is on the 1.6 (the original game uses a 1.8) you could so that. ;-)
@@TairyuShakuhachi Oh the membership part is out of the question! I’m just waiting to get it (and return from my 2 week vacation) and I’m most likely joining! Thanks for the quick answer and insight!
Hello there! If I keep my mouth 100% relaxed and natural, it slightly opens to the right side. If I do a tiny little shy kiss, the aperture is centred. Which one should I do? I imagine the "kiss" makes muscles work more and can be tiring at length. I received my Shakuhachi Yuu yesterday and can produce no more than a tiny whistle-like sound.
@@TairyuShakuhachi Thank you for your reply. 🙏 I've just intentionally produced a A and a C notes for the 1st time (and checked with a tuning app). I'm looking forward to following your lessons on your website.
So that would be exactly 1 year away from original giveaway. And back then I said you should do 2.1 if possible and now its finally here! And it sounds and looks amazing. I hope my luck was just waiting on this one to manifest itself haha
The ending credits or in the video? The ending credits is called Ryobo, m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_C_8ezZYUBI.html&pp=ygUTUnlvYm8gc2hhd24gamluYXNoaQ%3D%3D The bit I play in the video is just improvised
Would it be possible to make a video comparison on different sizes? Tone, sound quality. What works and doesn't work on different sizes. Typical uses and style of music performed. History. Difference in technique, if any. Physical limitations for players etc. ? I tried to search for such video but wasn't able to find anything comprehensive.
@@FelixSaint just To clarify you mean on the different lengths of Shakuhachi and the type of tones they produce and what pieces fit well for them and what have been done historically
@TairyuShakuhachi Precisely! In my mind , for some reason it feels like most non 1.8 were made as a jinashi and makers just went what sounded right. But i feel that is wrong and there might be traditional significance for various sizes as well.
Is all traditional Japanese music in 12-tone equal temperament? Since pitches like C#/Db share the same name. (In european classical music prior to the 19th century there were temperaments where C# and Db would've sounded different, thereof their different names.)
ok, I need a much, much simpler lesson. I bought a shakuhachi, to help in meditation practice. Don´t know the first thing about it, don´t want to, don´t want to play tunes, no specific goal, I just want to experience it.. Up to now, although I have had many a practice session, I can only get a blowy sound, not a flutey sound. I think I now spent 10 hours blowing into a tube.. It´s supposed to be a bit frustrating, but not pointless.. How do I get any other sound then pfffffff..?? I found how to cover the holes, how to hold it, that´s easy.. but then pffff.. I can find this lesson nowhere, do others not have this problem? What is wrong with me? What I managed to gather is, close holes, blow, change the angle until you get a sound.. Not how much air I need to expell, not how to hold the mouth -this helps a little-.. I did get a glimmer of a flutey sound buried deep beneath the noise.. However, I cannot seem to reproduce it.. I am starting to think maybe my shakuhachi is broken, but it cost 200,-, looking damn official.. so... It must be me. Or it needs more time, but, possibly more than I have in this lifetime.
Hey Shawn, these are awesome, I'm a fan! Do you think you could maybe do a cover of Yasuo's flute animation? This is a character from a game called league of legends, and I think that what he plays is the shakuhachi, however there are no covers/tutorials out there for this very simple song. I'm sure a lot of people would enjoy and be interested in watching you play it as it is a very popular game and this particular character is maybe on of the most popular ones with a huge fan base. Thanks!
@@TairyuShakuhachi looking it up again i realized there are a few different versions, the one im reffering to is this one: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-BGd7wSM3xKA.htmlsi=b8p50m45Gh7G0Rkc I think the notes are: D G A G A A A# A G D - D G A G A A# A G
Hello and thanks for all this nice content 😊! I have a 2.0 (C4) shakuhachi, so it’s not a standard 1.8 … shall I still be able to follow along if I take the 20 first videos session? Thank you
