The flutes coming on the "She [Philia] is true and eventually honest" at 2:28 give me goosebumps and an unexplainable feeling of spring freshness (that's a pity, that I don't like this word), truth and desire for marvellous actions and creations

You have no idea how happy I am to see someone speaking about academia as something which requires passion and curiosity to be genuine. I have become disillusioned with the world of academia in the past year after struggling with my mental health and being punished by the system for it. I lost my sense of self as it was defined by my measurable academic successes and failures. It is the sentiment in this video that is bringing me home to myself, a perspective that my dearest professors have brought out in me.

Hi, I was wondering when you could make more videos like these..? They're splendid, and I find your form of story telling quite addictive and substantial. I hope you're in the best of health, and maybe sooner than later, you'll make another one. Till then, I'll wait, hopeful, because these are pieces of great art and understanding, and I consider myself lucky to have found your channel. Thank you for these, even if you do not decide to make any more of them. Love, P.

I love your videos so much!!! Fr, they’re so helpful in inspiring me so really thank you from the bottom of my heart for these gifts you amazing human! Keep up the amazing work!!! 🤘🏻🤓😭🥰💕✨📚📝🖋🎭🖼🎨🎼 (Personal note: I was always made fun of by my family and friends for liking classical music and literature in general but of recent years I’m finally feeling seen with in the rise of academia aesthetics and have seriously come into myself. I’m so grateful for this subculture! I really hope it helps the younger generation coming up now not have to struggle like I did and embrace themselves younger. I want them all to see that they shouldn’t have to change for anyone or feel bad for what they like.. it’s in a way who we are and it’s so painful to see anyone shy away from being anything but fully themselves.)

I always come back to your videos to help me in times of being tired or depressed and growing stagnant or wishing to. They motivate me like nothing else and I’ve shared them with my few friends, they loved them! I’m telling you, and please understand when I say this, that I’m not being dramatic, they move me to tears. Even though I’ve watched them many times. It makes me feel overwhelmed with joy every time. I can feel such life in it!!! I can feel the love, the passion and depth of all the words you share with us being like these books and things in which you explain so well. I hear the echos of all the time spent within them. Those moments shared by us in this life. The good the bad the difficult and easy, together and alone, all that we think and feel in these caverns of our heads. It’s lovely to be amongst the people who get this feeling so well 🖤🖤🖤 Thank you so much for sharing your art and thus a bit of your soul with us, truly beautiful!

Ngl, dark acadmia ruined my mental health. But that was mostly on my part. Social media can be toxic, not dark academia by itself. People can be toxic when dark academia becomes an ego thing that makes them feel better about themselves. (Source: I am that toxic person) I was into dark acadmia for years and recently I started talking about how shitty the movement was and I felt deeply ashamed for being part of it because that's exactly what I thought it was: pretentious. But this video made me realize that it isn't dark academia by itself that is toxic and pretentious, it was me. Just because I stockpile "difficult" books I know I'm never gonna read to feel better about myself doesn't mean that everyone in the community does that. I was the one who tried to squeeze myself into a box I didn't fit in. And my ego prevented me from realizing it. But to be fair, social media really makes it easy for people to do this. Dark academia influencers often present themselves like they have their whole life figured out. They have found their identity, they have found their meaning in life -something many lost young people are desperate for. If you stay in the dark academia bubble long enough, you may be tempted to think that this is the only way to achieve fulfillment in life because you are not confronted with other options that are viable for you. But still, this is a warning: See yourself critically. Because the line between expressing yourself and trying to be someone you're not (thus denying important parts of yourself) gets blurred by the ego and you need to be mindful of what kind of media you consume and if it's benefiting you. In this video, it was said that dark academia people don't exist to please a crowd and get validation but I disagree. This is what social media is centered around, like it or not. Reading difficult books by yourself and posing with a stack of them in a tight-fitting outfit on tiktok are two entirely different things. And unfortunately, on many social media sites you only have to pretend to read those books and you still get all the validation. What I've also seen in the community is that pop culture gets shamed alot. Basically stuff like "omgg normal girls watch How I Met Your Mother while I read Ulysses 🙄🙄💅" and that's when being "smart" becomes an ego thing. And it is so easy to fall into that trap without knowing it when consuming dark academia content online because you don't always think critically about what you see and what the implications of these displayed behaviours are. Warning signs that dark academia has not been healthy for you include: -being very afraid of being perceived as 'stupid' -feeling like you need to be pretty/have a certain wardrobe to read/live a fulfilled life (Back then it was 'pretty girls can't be smart', now it could turn into 'ugly girls can't be smart') -denying other parts of yourself that don't fit the dark academia stereotype -when you find yourself shitting on pop culture for being 'unintellectual', thus looking down on other people while making yourself feel better (Yes, it's okay to shit on parts of pop culture if its 'shallowness' is actually harmful. But simply the lack of depth is not a valid reason to put people who like it down. You don't know people's stories with it. Maybe their relationship with the thing they like is more profound than jt seems. Don't judge too soon.) -you start getting higher and higher expectations of yourself to fit the dark academia stereotype. E.g. you might be tempted to think that your life won't be complete if you don't attend an Ivy League school and then put yourself down because it is simply beyond your capabilities (which is totally ok). -being annoyed because you find the district you live in ugly because you've been so exposed to the best of the best humanity has to offer (baroque cathedrals, expensive Ivy League campuses) that everything else looks like trash in comparison. Be aware that a modern style apartment is cheaper to produce and can house more people efficiently which makes it affordable for people to live in. Would you let a family be homeless just to put some more baroque embellishments in the door? -do you feel pressured to go for a stressful but well-paying career that will suck out your soul to afford expensive statues and antique furniture so you can make your house look more dark academia? Would you do morally questionable things to get more money to afford that stuff? On another note, the only aspect in which dark academia itself is actually toxic at is it's relationship with priviledge. Not everyone has the priviledge to live near baroque buildings (which are expensive as hell, obviously). Not everyone who attends an Ivy League school actually deserves it/ has worked for it. Chances are, if your parents can afford to sponsor a building, it wasn't your abilities that got you into the school. And dark academia often assumes that Ivy League students have certain positive qualities (intelligence, critical thinking, refined taste) which is plain wrong if not dangerous because it masks the social injustice of the best schools being unaffordable for most people. Ok I'm done rambling, maybe someone finds this helpful or interesting Don't judge my english skillz thx
@noaag
@noaag Год назад
jsyk, your english skills are flawless, and that you would even bring it up only reinforces your point that DA can make people insecure about their intelligence. i applaud your introspection, willingness to admit faults, and the effort to save others from the traps you fell for. these qualities are so much "smarter" than being a person who reads well or succeeds academically. (you write well too.) sorry for necro, i hope this doesn't make you reread your whole comment and go self-critical mode on it, always happens to me when someone necros my wall of text. but if it reignites your interest in the topic, maybe tell some more people your story, you clearly know what you're talking about and you know things people need to hear. much love.

@anyasundae8488

no, I think Dark Academia is pretentious because it’s based on and romanticizes a system that is inherently white, classist, and elitist. you personally may wish to combat these values but at its core DA feeds into conservative values with little to no resistance. how many of your favorite classics are written by people of color? how much of your favorite art is not european? how much of the literature and art you analyze is not through a white perspective nor for a white audience? DA is inherently pretentious, the entire aesthetic is based on IRL academia. EDIT: just wanted to add on, 90% of the dark academia aesthetic is based on actual institutions that not only favor the rich, privileged class but also make mental illness and an unmanageable workload normalized. no, it is not quirky to be pulling all nighters studying. that type of unhinged academic fervor shouldn’t be normalized at all. having mental breakdowns and being sleep deprived for the sake of academic validation shouldn’t be normalized, either. dark academia does both of these things without any mention to how damaging they truly are. mental illness isn’t quirky. overworking yourself isn’t quirky. these institutions nor the professors that teach there give a diddly crap about the students’ health, which is why romanticizing them is insensitive.
@anyasundae8488

but please, continue to rest on the throne of your privilege. i’m sure your whiteness will be able to get you much farther in life than me!
@noaag

@Stephen937 If you read books because they're good, then there's no reason you have to limit yourself to books written by white people. if it's important for you not to be racist, then listen when a person of color explains racism from a perspective you could never understand firsthand. DA conflates academia, intelligence, and white culture into one pseudo-racist mess, where the smartest, most academic books are the euro-centric ones. this is obviously problematic and as a fan that bums you out, OK, so the thing to do about it is use your critical thinking skills, not deny the racism in our institutions. nobody said "white institutions are racist because they are white", they're racist because they oppress people of color. all your strawmen ignore racial power structures and fall flat because of it. nice try though, im sure you thought you had em with the ol' "people who identify racism i am ignorant to are the real racists!" it's called white fragility. read a book about it. and as your fellow white person, please stop embarrassing us with bad faith, ignorant arguments about race relations. recognize the tunnel vision you get from your place of privilege, and in general? just don't be a dick. this is a dickish comment.
