Hi all, welcome to Bullhornbeach (bushcraft and camping). Yea, that's the silly little name we've called our place for several years now Lol! (there's a story behind that, maybe I'll share it someday). I'm a weekend warrior bushcrafter/camper/back to basics/homestead kind of guy and thoroughly love the bushcraft community. I've never had any official training but RU-vid has an abundance of information and that's where I've gained most of mine, except for my dad. He, in his day, was a real outdoors man. Being a high school teacher with summers off, he and one other teacher would hike for 2 weeks through South Dakota, Wyoming, Colorado, etc. with students and teach them about the outdoors. They were known as the Ozark Backpackers (we lived in the Ozark mountains). I hope to pass on a bit of knowledge I've gained from him, and so many others on YT, with whoever visits here. But mainly I just enjoy dirt time and decided to video some of it. Thanks for stopping by.

Have one for over a year. Only real issue is the AC runs all day and never really cools down the space. Added vent covers that help but I'm in Florida and it definitely struggles. I'm going try to install bigger unit. Also fridge struggles to maintain temp. I added recirculating fan and it helps but it's another thing I'm going to replace

Great video, Ive been working on my fire skills. Bow drill is scary, I got bad shoulders and back, but maybe if I switched off with my son I could do it. If I could only do 75 strokes at a time would that be enough? Also do you think you could carve a spindle from a block or does it need the circular growth rings of a branch or something? Subscribed, good video.
@Bullhornbeach
@Bullhornbeach 2 месяца назад
Thx for watching and subbing! As far as stroke count it’s hard to say. Just too many variables. Types of wood, pressure, etc… But pine was definitely easier than cedar for me. Give 75 a shot and see how it works for you. From what I’ve learned the spindle and hearth should be the same wood but it’s certainly worth trying something new if you have a block laying around. Thx again!!

I have to laugh at this. After 10,000 yrs of scientific advancement these people still want you to waste your time starting a fire by rubbing two sticks together. We have ferocerium rods, matches, lighters, but we need to go back to the Stone Age to light a fire??? Pathetic!!

Well thank you for the mention young man :) As well as using a set I really enjoy watching others achieve an ember. You've got the basis of a good technique there, I look back at my earlier sets and technique and wonder how I managed! I reckon you can add power to your bow reps by moving your grounded knee further back behind your bent knee, that will then move the bow from going over your foot and be more like sword thrust which utilises shoulder power (imagine brushing the yard one-handed across your body or by your side). I'd also not take much material off the end of the drill because the initial bowing is to char slightly and marry the surface areas of the depression and drill for maximum contact and it's also charred material. Happy to chip in more stuff if you want me to Hank. I noticed the metal bearing block you used, I have to say that I have no experience so I will be watching future usage. One final thing: of the senses your eyes, ears and touch are used and this may sound odd but I smell the scorched notch-really-as the smell is slightly different to scorched firewood and to me it's bolt on part of the muscle memory. Top job.
@Bullhornbeach
@Bullhornbeach 2 месяца назад
Thanks for the input brother. Yeah on that last one the smell really hit me. I didn’t mention it in the video, but I noticed it for sure. You may have heard me cough at the end that was because I was breathing so much smoke. I’ll definitely be smelling for that one in the future.

I think it worked pretty well. The drill works pretty good. The test is, would the tapered cutting end stand up to a little larger stick being batoned? Then the fitment would be tighter in the hole drilled. That's going to be a tough baton job though. Great video BB. Aways woundered about that tool.
@Bullhornbeach

Yea man my first 2 attempts were larger diameter. No go. It just got stuck. Unsticking it just broke the peg. Maybe I should have tapered the sticks first. May try that. But yea I was pretty happy with the results. Thx for watching brother!!

Great video and comparison of the two!! Sometimes the old adage of "You get what you pay for" holds true. I had an old Coghlan's folding camp saw for long time. Someone stole it out of our campsite, so I replaced it with Sven folding camp saw. The Sven looked like a better saw, but after using it, I actually like the Coghlan's better. So I am going to end up getting a Coghlan's to stick back in my camper.

The wiggle in the hinge joint on the cheap one worries me. Looks like a likely failure point. And you don't need a failure when minutes count to get a fire started in bad weather. My 2 cents- sometimes cheaper is just that... cheap. Thanks for the video 🤘

Talking about the back up camera? I thought “plugs” were already wired in to “play” on the back up monitor, but they weren’t. I had to cut the wires at the back top light and wire it myself. Plug and play would have been a lot easier. Hope that helps. !! 🤘

How does the A/C keep up? Wife and I are in the market for a small travel trailer like this one. Concerned that the little window unit won’t keep it cool on hot Kansas days. Normal for us to camp when it’s 90+ degrees. Want one that will stay cool even on the hottest days.
@Bullhornbeach
@Bullhornbeach 4 месяца назад
Really it does pretty good. 90+ will push it but if the campsite has shade you should be ok. Also some people upgrade just for that reason. I think mine is either 5000 or 8000 btu, 10000 would be better. I remember those hot days on the flight line at McConnell! Lol. Now I’m in Arkansas, 100+ in July and August on some days and so far I’m pretty happy with it. Thx for watching Farm!

Retention strap across the front if you want; these are nice cause you can pack in the house and carry them out to the camper for loading. Hood lifts on the bed storage. Thanks for the demo. When I watched your initial introduction video for this camper, my first thoughts on the wall unit, was that you will have issues with it. The bad thing about the wall units, is that they have to be correctly installed to begin with, and then when you park your camper in the camp ground, you have to make sure that it is either 100% level, (Which in some campgrounds almost impossible), or the camper leaning slightly to the left side to allow the water to drain outbound. We have the roof mounted unit on our Jayco, and finally had to replace it in 2022. Our local RV dealer sucks here too. I think it is just the RV dealers in general. We had a tree limb fall through the roof of our first camper, and it was in the dealer for repairs for 6 months! The WHOLE camping season. And when we got it back, it was filthy. Hand prints all over the walls and ceiling, saw dust in the floor, in the storage areas, and staples and screws scattered through out the camper. They winterized it, as it was end of season when we finally got it back. And the next spring when I de-winterized it, the outside shower was cracked because they failed to winterize it. So I had to replace that. After that ordeal, and dealing with them for over a year trying to get stuff resolved, we just cut our losses, and traded our Gulf Stream in for our Jayco. We actually went up to Indiana to buy our Jayco. And I have NEVER been back to the dealer since. I do all the repairs my self, because I do it right, and know it is done right. One thing you need to do, that no one explained to me, is every few years, pull the corner trim pieces off, clean off all the old sealant, and replace it with the Dicor corner seal kits!! This will save you some extensive repairs if you keep this camper long term. I had two corners that leaked, and over time I had severe floor and corner rot in the wood. That is a VERY common thing with these campers. So the important piece of information I can pass on to you, is every year, inspect every spot on the roof that has sealant, and replace the sealant in the corners every few years!! These campers are built as cheap as they can build them, and the wood they use is cheap and not treated wood. So when I rebuilt the corners and flooring that rotted out, I used treated wood and sealed it up with the Dicor sealant!! Good luck and enjoy your new camper Brother!!
@Bullhornbeach
@Bullhornbeach 6 месяцев назад
Thx for all the good info man! I'll def keep an eye on the roof. And like you I've pretty much given up on the dealer, at least this one, and do repairs myself if I can. You're spot on with the leveling, I had to lean it to the left A LOT and it still wanted to leak inside. I ripped it all out and "redesigned" the drain pan with a slope. Now at least it can sit pretty level and still drain. Luckily this camper is not expensive and I've been quite successful renting it out! Come spring I may rent this full time and buy another for us! ha.
