If you want another legendary story about A’s, look up the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake. The night the earthquake hit, the World Series kicked off, the San Francisco Giants and Oakland A’s playing each other in “The Battle of the Bay”.

AFC North is typically seen as the toughest division in the league (in recent history). VERY physical, very competitive across all four teams.

So it may seem odd since the A's didn't win, but pretty much every team now does it this way. It has gotten far more fancy and analytical, but for the most part all teams have adopted this method.

Basically if they all did everything the same the team with the biggest budget always wins. A small team with less money needs to try something else to have a chance of winning. So what the Athletics did was trying to hire players based solely on on-base stats instead of normal recruiting methods.

The thing about baseball is you get 3 outs in an inning no matter what, so what matters most in each at bat is to not get out. They were evaluating players using flawed stats like batting average and the movie focused on an easy stat for viewers to react to, on base percentage, which is basically batting average plus walks. There are a bunch of other stats that see screen time for a few seconds but it would have made for a worse movie to try to include those as well.

The people who say the A's didn't win (whilst technically correct) are missing the point. In any sports league if you have say 20 teams and all of those teams spend their money wisely then it stands to reason that the club with the most money to spend will finish in 1st place and the club with the least money will finish in 20th place. But not all clubs spend their money wisely and this is what the A's took advantage of. They were the club with the smallest budget BUT they had a winning record and reached the play-offs. That is a remarkable achievement. To put it in an English context, take the English premier league as an example and let's say this coming season Ipswich Town finish 5th in the league. That'd be an astounding achievement. Now imagine someone said - "Yeah but they didn't win..." I mean talk about missing the point LOL!

It is based on a true story but as with all Hollywood "True stories" a few liberties were taken with certain characters. For example - In real life the coach wasn't resistant at all to the new ideas and was actually on board with it. BUT every good story needs an antagonist for the hero to bounce off of. So the coach became the "bad guy" in the film so to speak.

Theres 82 games in a season to make the playoffs you have to a 500. Record. 8 teams from each conference our ranked based on record With 4 rounds the 1st round consist of the 1st seed vs the 8th seed, 2nd vs 7th and so on. The finals are the west conference team that won the 3rd round vs the east conference team that won the third round. Each round is a best of 7 series. Although back in mj's time the 1st round was a best of 5

I think the closest thing Britain got to this was Leicester winning the Prem on a miniscule budget by using data and backing that up with scouting. They identified Mahrez and Konte as massively underrated players that all the top teams overlooked based on yards covered, ball retention, chances created etc and ended up with the best midfield partnership in the Prem that year and made a huge profit selling them

Another thing to consider about Utah is that of all cities in the US, Utah consistently has one of the best home field/court advantages in the league because they play at elevation, which Utah players are accustomed to, but the opposing team is not. So for Jordan to play with food poisoning, and at elevation is a superhuman feat

"I'll be praying for you" is just something a religious person would say to someone they feel for (in the US). In this movie, I think it shows the player's knowledge that Bean's job is in danger.

Guys. Ive been in and around baseball for 50 years. This system will not win the WS. My San Francisco Giants won it with 15th/30 payroll..but we had chemistry. We won it in 2010, 2012 and 2014..never having a payroll over 10th outt of 30 teams. But it was never based on metrics, or metrics were used as AN input, but our manager made decisions based on his experience and we won. You cannot win based on stats because they do not account for the moment and all of the variables at that moment. Period.

Its a pressure cooker job and a marathon, not a sprint. All pro QBs have been cream of the crop their whole lives at least until college and have been in leadership situations for just as long before they get to the NFL. You have to be groomed to be an NFL QB and have crazy talent and desire. If your team doesn't believe in you, even if you have the measurables, you are out. If your team and management love you but you lose accuracy, you are out. IF you decline but are still pretty good, your team will get a replacement ready. Your backups don't really like you and want you to fasil so they get their shot. The media won't stop asking questions. Seems like constant pressure and not sure it would be worth the money for alot of people. At the end of it all you probably get hit the most for the longest and will have problems with your brain later in life. Tough job.

A great baseball player is one of the hardest things to be. You have to hit a round ball with a round stick ......square. It is only sport, doing something 3 out of 10 times (hitting 300) is a great. Can you name another sport or job where doing 30 percent of the time is great. Can't say weather forecaster either.

I was at games 16 and 20 in the streak. I'm not even an A's fan but I'm a fan of the game and went. This movie gives me chills watching it. It was so hype in the Bay Area when this was going on. It was a hell of a time and place to be. The only thing I've felt that was the same was being at Bonds' record breaking home run game. It's a feeling of euphoria that everyone feels and its electric. I hope you guys get to be at a game that sparks this kind of vibe!

I'm a Detroit Tigers fan first, but I adopted the Dodgers as my National League team in 1981 (when I was 11 yrs old) because of Fernando Valenzuela. My dream World Series would be Tigers vs. Dodgers. You guys should check out Mark "The Bird" Fidrych.. a pitcher who burst onto the national scene in 1976.

Maybe you guys would want to react to the mid 70s Cincinnati Reds. The '75 & '76 Reds are arguably the greatest team ever assembled in MLB. The only other team, that might compete, was the '27 Yankees.

I was 15, a pitcher in school and organized Summer league, when Fernando was a rookie. I was also a huge Cincinnati Reds fan. Each league only had two divisions back then. The Reds and Dodgers were the big rivalries in the NL West. But, ya just couldn't not love Fernando. They didn't mention this in the video, but he was a good hitter in his first 4-5 seasons. There, seemingly, wasn't anywhere a person could go, in that rookie season, where people weren't talking about Fernando. What a fun Summer that was. I became a Mets fan after that.

BTW, do not make the mistake that many non-Americans make. The conflicts in the 1960s you saw in the documentary were not between Mexicans and Americans. It was between Americans (Mexican-Americans) and Americans.(Eurpean--Americans). Chicanos are Americans.
