Thomas Bo Larsen is not a sympatic character, but I think he is a great actor. Having grown up in Denmark in the fifties and to the late sixties (when I left to become an au pair in Westport Ct) I grew up watching many movies with Hennig Moritzen he often played a more cheerful character, but he was a good actorl
6:05 this scene with the flower pot reminded me of the opening scene of Blue Velvet. An ididilic, seemingly perfectly curated garden in an equally idillic American suburb. Only for the old man tending to the garden suddenly dying of a hart attack. the camera zooms in and turns into an extreme closeup of the soil, where chaos reigns among the insects below. The peaceful human-made garden is a facade.
Death scenes as convenient - also existential theme of showing this happens to everyone. The movie funeral scene is to show how movies can influence and get you out of your mind. And I guess having him play Ellen is a way to get him to go out of his personalised mind. To see life from Audrey's perspective? Women's perspective definitely a theme because it's part of his life so much
Every night I want to cry. I don't know why, but I have a deep feeling of existential dread. It possible that this feeling relates to turmoil and suffering the earth is enduring at the hand of this cancerous species. May GOD save us all.
omg saw this not knowing anything about, with my parents. we were all disturbed by it haha. my dad a found the most humor it it 😭 my mom said don't play movies like that anymore 💀💀💀
I take pride in finding great movies that the majority of people don't like. Undiscovered gems. This is one of them. Just watched it last night and am blown away. It was a spiritual experience. The musical score is god-tier. Can't believe I never heard of it until just a few days ago. This is Aronofsky's magnum opus. Though I can understand why it wouldn't resonate with some. It's deep with many layers, and the story is unconventional and non-linear. Brief anecdote how I discovered it. I'm familiar with Clint Mansell's Lux Aeterna from Requiem for a Dream, which is very well known. I saw it when it first came out. Heard that piece on another YT video recently, and wanted to listen to more of Mansell's work. So I searched YT and The Fountain kept popping up. I listened to its tracks and was mesmerized. I watched the film the next day.
It’s too bad the Hocus Pocus sequel a couple years ago couldn’t do what this one did. Aside from just waiting too long to make it, they sanitized a lot of the dark humor that existed in the original. It was sad to see. Glad to hear they weren’t afraid to get dark with BB.
I watched this movie in theaters and this scene absolutely TERRIFIED me for some reason. I felt genuinely so uncomfortable watching it, and this legit triggered my flight or fight response. I almost left the theater 😭😭 I wouldn't say NOPE is the BEST horror movie of all time, but I would say it is definitely ONE OF the best, and for this scene in particular. I feel like a lot of more recent horror movies tend to forget the whole.. horror thing. It's all cheap jumpscares. A lot of them feel more like thrillers that just make you jump every now and then. To this day, I've never had a single movie make me as genuinely uncomfortable and terrified as NOPE, and it's definitely one of my favorite films for that reason.
omg this version of aliend is literally alien for kids done by disney...alien is not once a real threat in the movie, there are holes in the script, it is super generic, it just doesn't make sense you like it :D
Overall, I must say that you've all made excellent choices when buying these titles. I can't say that I enjoy every single one of them, but for the most part, it's stuff that I own myself or that I want to buy. I've seen them all, though. HUGE props to the three of you for all owning Altman's 3 Women. It's a masterpiece. And shame on you for all owning Uncut Gems, which is in the bottom 5 films of all time for me. I made it through it, but it's the only film I've seen that made me physically ill it was so bad.
A great film. I’m not sure why it is largely forgotten, so it’s great that you’re giving it some love. I saw this in the cinema when it was released and I rewatched it earlier this year. I’ve also included it in a recent upload as a great example of ‘Spectacle’. 😳👍
One of my top first time watches of the last couple years. Only other film I've seen from this director is Leviathan. Definitely connected more to The Return. So damn good.
I think it can go either way. Its otherworldy stuff is just a hallucination or ....its actually otherworldly, and the drug connects them to unseen forces
6.5/10.....Saw a matinee showing today with a decent amount of people. The best parts of this film is the cinematography and the lead actress. To me this film had potential to be really good, but the tone of the movie was rough. Felt like they should've told this film linearly and without the songs. Just keep a very minimal suspense score. Writing at times was cringe but not overbearble. Like you, I went in blind but actually felt let down because this could've been a lot stronger. Enjoy watching your reviews after seeing the movie Brotha
Very good review lol. I have to seriously pause my stance on amc stubs with this gem. I like the writing with the cops because they have the education of a high schooler and if they aren't detectives this is very grounded for how complex they can think when they're also rationing ebt cards and be new being a ride together pair. LOL Their dilemma also underlines how heuristic thinking by law enforcement can be skewed with one twist of identity politics against the statistics they routinely engage in educational updates over.
I honestly loved watching this movie, it felt very fresh and exciting. However I agree with you that some of the dialogue was cringy and I also thought the last scene with the cops was lame. Regarding the treatment of the gender roles, I appreciated that the movie goes all out with the controversial portrayal of women, it feels more realistic… I hate it when you can tell a director is trying to be safe and avoiding being “problematic”. To me, this was a 9/10!
This movie was almost good. It tried too hard to be Pearl and the entire 3rd act was terrible. It's "message" was about as nuanced as a facebook post lol. Like yeah dude, we get it. You don't need to spell it out for us.
I really liked this film although I agree with your message critiques. Personally, unless a film is made by a hateful director or is outright hate filled with its message, I generally try not to hold those interpretations against it. I think it's important to have films where there are female abusers, perpetrators, and their inherent victim perception. Women can abuse too, and that is important to represent. The structure of the film really portrays that excellently. It is just parts of the script that are so blunt that if the rest of the film is between a 7-9/10 that was a 5 and kinda missed the mark. I don't think it's fair to blame a film for being adored by bigots. American Psycho is a great example of a left wing critique/satire on them, yet they unironically attach themselves to Bateman. Let alone I doubt this film ever garners a wide audience to be viewed in such a way. Idk I like the film 7or8/10, but I will need to rewatch it. And it is the film after 6 months when I do, I may also really dislike it for those faults. It's an interesting film. Out of all the serial killer films this year, Longlegs, Trap, etc. They all missed the mark for me. This one largely landed it. Although Kiyoshi Kurosawa's Cure is releasing this year and from the reviews at the film festivals, it looks dope af. Unfortunately, it will likely be slept on in the west.
@@vispian7688 thank you so much for sharing your well thought out opinion of this film. Yea I think you made a lot of great points. I agree that it’s not fair to blame a film for just because bigots interpret it for their own validation. Because really any bigot can watch any movie and decide to take what they want from it. I was just saying that this film was framed and written in a way that was one dimensional enough for those bigots to actually have reason to interpret it the way that they do. American Psycho has so many layers of intentional satire that it doesn’t bother me that idiots misinterpret it. But I don’t feel that strange darling was developed or nuanced enough in that department. It’s still a good film and I enjoyed it. It just mostly comes down to the fact that I wish it was written with more maturity, understanding and intellect to develop its very serious themes more. Btw Cure is an excellent film! The west will always sleep on film that has the 1 inch barrier of subtitles unless it’s parasite lol
@TheMisfitPond I can understand that. I guess my counterpoint would be that structurally, the film is nuanced it plays with your perception. But yeah, the script could be remarkably better. At least the performances can keep it together! Sorry I completely mistyped. Although Cure is amazing. I meant his new one, Cloud, which just got shown at Venice Film Fest. Releasing in Japan this month. (He also released a really cool short horror film called Chime this year as well, which a lot of people rate highly, I have some issues with it, but it's good)
I praise the director for the direction, women do abuse their position in society as women and to let that rock in a film is very ballsy. You sounded kinda “woke”or something in this review. I like your channel but i admit i felt a bit bothered by your overprotectiveness of the image of women. There’s a ton of cases of women doing just this in this year alone and there’s nothing fake about being SA but there’s also nothing fake about female sociopaths. No offense, just respect, food for thought. Take care man.
@@skywalkersbutido6375 no worries dude. I knew that some people would interpret my thoughts as “woke” even though I absolutely hate that word and always have. Remember I did mention in the review, it has to do with the fact that it wasn’t nuanced. I have no problem shedding light on serious issues no matter where they land on the political spectrum. My issue is that I feel like it wasn’t developed well and resorted to tired out stereotypes to get its point across a la the cop characters. This could’ve been a super thought provoking piece of cinema and to me came off one dimensional.
@@TheMisfitPond i mean I don’t think of you as “woke”i meant to say i reacted to your comments as being woke, anyway nothing but respect man,me personally have my own issues with the movie. I don’t doubt the seriousness you bring to the table when it comes to these reviews and women’s issues.
@@skywalkersbutido6375 for sure dude. Of course I know that women can be evil, manipulative and lie about being abused. It’s happened plenty of times. I just wish this film brought more to the conversation than what it did that’s all. I appreciate you responding reasonably
This was not my favorite of his but it was incredible and he seems to only be getting better. "Cophengagen Cowboys". His newest might be his best. A lot can be learned from Regn interviews. Like Hansel and Gretel these are parobles or fariytales but was one take hos message.
Just so darn bored with all this alien abduction scare the audience hokum. The reality of an alien abduction is that the little grey guys aren't trying to hurt you intentionally, they're a bit similar to overactive, overly curious medics just trying to put a few tracking probes up your asshole, in your neck, nose or ears, pat you on the head like pets then send you back to bed. They're not going to ruin they're prize test subjects, they just hold you up for a while then send you back to your own timeline.
I loved the parodical but surreal nature of the cops in the LA station, they reminded me a lot of the the Twin Peaks station, but in an evil twisted (but still funny) version of the dorky and innocent cops of the David Lynch one.
Also, I’m in Avery precarious position. I’ve been watching the reviews since I found out people were shiting all over the movie and my wife is curious and wants to watch it. I haven’t had the heart to tell her.
A lot of us fans deeply attached to the OG Crow Were young the time it came out. I was 13. The OG crow created a literal cultural phenomenon between the movie and the Loss of the human being Brandon Lee. Because Brandon was a beloved actor of the Time. He had at least 4 movies under his belt and he was an over all genuine human being. Like Keanu levels of genuine human being. That’s why we are so defensive of The Crow. Then you add on the fact The Crow is a Creation of J.O’Barr’s real life tragedy he suffered in the loss of his wife in a hit and run.
