My channel is all about building and maintaining ponds and water features. I believe everyone should be able to afford having a beautiful pond, water garden, stream or waterfall in their garden or on their patio. The aim of ozponds is to provide insights and inspiration on how to create your own piece of water paradise, without spending a fortune. If that sounds good please subscribe, visit my website (ozponds.com) and let's see what we can build.

You might need to watch the vid again. The rubber hose from the pump inside the pond is connected to the pvc that feeds the bog filter via a Barb fitting at the base of the filter.
Thank you. I have some areas drying around the pond because lack of rain that naturally would make a bog area. Should I put rocks there to get bacterial growth? Do rocks need to be porous? 3/4 acre pond.
Hey, Oz, I am on a local environmental advisory committee here in the US, and we have a couple large ponds in parks. I have launched 3 floating gardens, and they are doing well, but the task seems too much for what is really feasible to clarify the water. There are fish, turtles, birds, etc. all in and around. Given this, what is success? How much floating vegetation do I need to add? How will I know when it is enough?
@@Ozponds Thanks, that is a great way to look at it. I also have a turbidity tube, for measuring the water clarity. Is there a level of clarity that I should be aiming for? More clarity equals more plants able to grow at the edges (because light can penetrate X number of inches into the water), which results in even more clarity, right?
@@erichneal3062 that is true. But what is causing the turbidity? That’s more a mechanical filter issue, capturing sediment. One benefit of light not penetrating the water column is it’s very difficult for algae to grow below the waters surface.
So what you are saying is that the way to improve filtration in Lake Burley Griffin in Canberra would be to spend $600k on two solar bees? But seriously, I'd be interested to hear how you would do LBG
Probably a bit unrealistic to expect a DIY enthusiast to be able to fix all the issues with LBG. The starting point is obviously dealing with pollutants. It seems getting hundreds of thousands of people to collectively care about the environment is a big ask. Much easier in a pond where I personally control the land surrounding the pond.
I have seen floating wetlands as simple as a block of foam with willow sticks shoved through it, sticks root in a week, in water or shoved in the ground. Not sure if they grow in Aus, but in the UK they are among the first to grow in spring and the last to lose leaves in Autumn, a large growing season and they grow very fast.
Interesting, there is a lake nearby the inlet and outlet are on the same side of the lake. What very large lake to. It's getting healthier they are dragging the bottom to lessen the lake weeds
Theres a few design ideas out there for small ponds. I don’t use them in my ponds as I like seeing open water. I still get the benefits of the plants as there’s plenty on the margins and bog filters.
Thanks for the info Kev! I have a large pond that is quite murky as it loses water. It has lots of plants as you mentioned growing around it, but I think i will have to take out some of the catfish as there are a bunch in there. Also i have many oak and maple trees who's leaves will fall in the pond during fall, should I try and remove them (the bulk of them, cant get 100%)????
Sometimes clear water just isn’t possible. If it’s unlined and the cat fish are constantly stirring up the bottom it’ll always be murky, doesn’t mean it’s not healthy.
Hi Kev. Im coming close to ordering my rocks. What are the types of rocks you use. I don’t seem to be able to find the sandy coloured rock or lava rock up here. Most of what i can get has sharp edges like quartz etc
My neighbor has a large unlined pond with an 85 lpm aerator in the middle, last year it was about half filled with hydrilla and the water was crystal clear, at the end of summer during drought he had some guys come to dredge silt and remove all the hydrilla. Now this year the water is murky brown...
absolutely, this would probably be more reliable, and if they are digging a big pond they probably have space and are using a excavator. a smallish pump could also be installed, since wetland flow rate is often pretty slow. for a pumped wetland the wetland would need to be partly separated to insure the flow takes a long route out of the wetland away from the pump. I see floating filtration probably a better option where space is limited, such as a canal etc, since it would probably be more expensive and less reliable and need more maintenance.
I had greenish brown water and did a 90% water change and added well water. The pond is about 8000 gallons. The water turned dark black as soon as I added the water. Does anyone have any ideas what the black stuff could be
4:24 ❤ definitely in the future try running that elbow to the center of the bucket so that way the water flows upwards evenly. Versus from one side. Great video
Been watching a ton of pond videos as I prepare to do my own for the first time. I’m fairly handy, and I’ve wanted a pond for years. Everyone uses the unnecessary expensive equipment. Been binge watching your videos. Thanks so much for the excellent content!
