I'm a New Yorker who plays the Puerto Rican Cuatro, and on this channel I hope to express myself through the instrument and teach you how to play it as well!
Disclaimer: I am not a professional, I'm just a self-taught musician with experience in performing, teaching, and a decade of playing various musical instruments.
I like that you're a more delicate player with the cuatro. I find that sometimes cuatro musicians get too hard on the strings and because of the fact each string is coupled with another, it can sound a bit muddled.
Man these videos are so great, I started learning guitar this year but have been wanting to dabble in Cuatro, as a way to connect with PR now that I've moved away permanently. Gonna buy one next time I visit and come back to these videos. Mil gracias!
Shalom/Hola, It’s a blessing your explanation of the cuatro chords. By any chance do you have a download document showing the correct cuatro chords? I’ve practicing the cuatro but still get confused on the chords and scales. God Bless, Mr. Ángelo 🙏🏻🙏🏻
The inspiration of a good instrument it will push you to work and do what nobody can do when you learning without this beginning is nothing what he said is wrong do it yourself or pay to learn most important is the tempo and rhythm without that don't waste your time beautiful music learning you want to kept but not easy required a lot of skills and practice
Remember the part about playing quietly on your 8 things to know before learning cuatro vid? Well, forget that part. A gig like this is not the time to play quietly, my friend! Play that thing like you mean it, and strum some chords!
For sure! Sadly the sound setup there wasn't great and we ended up having to use a mic that people use to talk, so it wasn't super loud. Definitely gonna play with more passion next gime
Newbie here....great video.I work in a school. The music teacher decided to loan me a cuatro to practice...i have decided....start with Cuatro and end with Mandolin
MERCI' ! THANKYOU FOR THE TIPS! I SCORED A QUATRO AT A LOCAL PAWN SHOP(MADE IN CHINA). NOW THAT I APPRECIATE PLAYING THIS LOVELY INSTRUMENT..I WOULD LIKE TO BUY A "REAL" QUATRO.(NOT FACTORY MANUFACTURED)..ANY ADVICE. THANKS!
Hey man! do you think you could make a video about some good simple songs for people that have a decent grasp on cuatro playing to practice on? Thanks :)
Just wish you had thought to ASK ppl to TRY to lower their yakking for the video’s sake, or at least to be polite so others can hear your beautiful playing!! Thank you so much for sharing your talent w us!! God bless you!!💖🎼🇵🇷👏
Hola Cuatro Boy! Gracias for these videos. I have an important question I cannot find a specific answer anywhere. How thick should the pua to play the cuatro be?
Honestly this is up to whatever you prefer! I always say a thicker pick will teach you to control your plucking better. I play with 0.6mm and sometimes 0.5mm
Hey man! I was just wondering if you'd ever make a video on how to play the main Minecraft theme, i know you've made a great cover for it, but I'd like to see a tutorial on how to play it. Muchas gracias :)
Can anyone refer me somewhere to buy a decently built cuatro (easy to play and stays in tune) for $500 or less? I'm in Chicago area, and/or can purchase online if I have some confident I won't end up with junk. I appreciate it!!
Thanks a lot for this video! Would you say that the cuatro is harder or easier to play than acoustic guitar? Provided that there are harder and easier instruments to play, that is
I would say it depends. If you've never played an instrument before, then the Guitar is easier to pick up. But if you have experience on stringed instruments, then the Cuatro is much easier to understand.
Awesome. I wanna learn more cuatro. I play guitar and it seems mostly the same. It's the style that changes and of course the sound of the instrument. I like your style of teaching. It feels very much like my way of learning so I understand it with no issues.
Great video - You're right, if your aim is just to learn - expensive instruments are not the way to go, but, and this is a strong But - if you want an investment or are really going to make this instrument your goal; go for a hand made instrument made in Puerto Rico. Most are expensive, but they hold and increase their value enormously as time goes by. Many of the best cuatro maker have died in the past 15 years and their instruments are top quality and their value have increased enormously. Hand made Cuatros are getting harder and harder to find, (amazon cuatro buyers beware) but there are several Cuatro makers in PR who sell them online, but be ready to pay a high price and check what woods they are made of. Keep your cuatro in good condition and as years go by you will see their value go up. One cuatro maker in Caguas PR has been making electric cuatros and they're selling faster than he makes them. Starting at 1500.00) They are beautiful even though I prefer the typical familiar type. Play on.
