Never got to hear Phil. Sounds like a great announcer. I remember Chambliss's shot but id forgotten how close that was in dropping over the fence. You figure it might reach seats the way he clubbed it and the arc it took but im guessing 3-5 ft.
Thurmond was a great ballplayer. He do it all. One Hell of team leader & captain. Gone to soon. I remember hearing the news of his death , sad day for baseball.
Today's players are soft and spoiled. That's when real men played the game. Nolan Ryan and Louie Tiant used to throw 200 plus pitches in a game. Now they hit 70 and everyone's Like we got to get him out he's in the 6th inning. What a joke
Orioles fan here, although this was a year before I became a baseball fan when we moved to Baltimore. Thurman was a great player, and no matter how much we dislike each other (O's and Yanks), we WERE one team those few days that Thurman was mourned. Baseball is competitive, at least here, but they are one unit when it is called for (see the brawl where players were attacked, Texas and Cleveland, and Indians players protected the Rangers, and fought off the fans), especially when we lose one as great as Thurman Munson. May he continue to Rest in Peace. That is, when he is not playing with the greats, and Say Hey to Willie for us all, please... 21 June 2024 1555 Hours...
I remember I couldn't concentrate at school that day and all i did was watch the clock so I could get home. I didn't get home till the 6th inning and to my dismay they were losing 2-0. I was set up pefectly for Bucky Dent's Homerun.
Batting 8th, in center field, #24, Willie Mays, #24. We just lost him. I can't stop crying. Rest in power, #24. #SayHey. 2:02. Willie's rookie season, 1951. When the hell else would he be batting eighth????
We were playing basketball on the driveway when the radio broke the news. Everybody stopped, stunned silence. A few nights later they broadcast the Yankee game live - saw Bobby Mercer break down in tears after hitting a homer. We all cried. RIP Thurman
It was a sad day for baseball. It’s uncanny how we forget everything we do could be our last time we ever do it who would’ve thunk Thurman Munson played baseball the night before passes away the next day. Enjoy every minute of your life because every minute may be your last rest in peace Thurman.
My Mom bought five tickets for me and four of my friends (two were Mets fans) from Bankers Trust. We sat in the right field upper deck. I'm getting goose bumps writing this. It was one of the greatest days in Yankee Stadium... and it was a great speech. I met him about 15 years later, by accident, at the Consumer Electronics Show at the ColecoVision booth. I was a tech reporter covering the event. Coleco was introducing a new baseball video game for its game system. I had an afternoon appointment to interview a couple of execs, but when the show opened around 10 am or so I passed the big booth and a PR exec waved me over and said, "Would you like to meet Mickey Mantle?" My face must've feel because she turned around to her assistant and laughed, "Wow, Steve looks like a little boy!" I was ushered into the back of the booth and the ladies went to get a Polaroid camera (it was the mid 1980s) to get a pic of us. I spent four or five minutes talking with Mickey Mantle, my boyhood hero. He was nice, polite and humble. Wonderful guy. Thanks for posting.
This is a very amateurish, fragmented documentary. No narrative along the way. The only good thing is seeing the old timers and some of my heroes from the 60’s.
I was a junior in high school in Connecticut, where it’s almost half Yankee fans and almost half Red Sox fans (with a few Mets fans, too). The Yanks-Sox rivalry was local, intense, and not yet overly hyped by ESPN.
Of Course Those Birds Are "Red Hot" and the RED SUX ARE SUCKING, LMFAO!!!!!! "Those Birds Won 12 of 14!!" Like this doesn't need to be said, its obvious who is the best team in baseball right now, duh!!!!
First of all, those White Sox uniforms... Secondly, I believe this was the last day the Sox were managed by former Cubs' shortstop, Don Kessinger. The day Munson died, Kessinger was fired AND he also retired as a player. The day Munson died, Kessinger was replaced by...Tony LaRussa! Think about that: La Russa began managing the day after this was recorded, Munson died tragically, and LaRussa was managing the White Sox in 2022 -- 43 years later.
2:39 You don’t understand how many times I think of this story right here, honestly makes me emotional. Just love the game of baseball so much I wrote an essay about how steroid users shouldn’t be in HOF. You can agree or disagree with me but the point is my hook was inspired by this story. If for just a moment a little kid new to the game would think these old players were buried at a baseball field. That is such an honor because they think so highly of these guys playing wise and morally. Which is why steroid users/cheaters should not share a stage with these legends of our game who these young kids think with such high praise Anyways just wanted to share that🙌🏼 thank you Mr Shepherd
