Help me understand why you would video instead of giving the situation your full attention. This is an error in judgment IMO.

It’s all about surprise. In my encounters, I made sure they saw/heard me before they got that close. Id have rang that bike bell more and yelled louder than that. They have bad eyesight and only when that closest bear saw the pack move did it confirm its suspicion you were there. That’s too close - he could have sprinted at you to charge a perceived threat instead of fleeing. They were juvenile siblings, so fleeing was still natural to them. An older bear might have come at you. Bear spray saved me twice in Alaska in the latter situation when they were surprised and I did not know they were there.

I got that close to one biking in the backcountry at Yellowstone, unfortunately it was when I stopped to take a look at the scenery. So I would have had to jump on my bike and started peddling. As it was I made sure to keep my bike between me and it, finally it lost interest and wondered off.

The guys handled the situation very well without shouting or anything but looking how fast the bear sprinted I think I'd just leave my backpack where it was and not attempt to retrieve it 😂

You also let them get close by talking softly, not being loud and making yourselves seem bigger, like you are supposed to...

Good thing these were a couple of young Grizzlies. I’m always amazed that the priority is getting a good picture or video of the bear as it closes distance…

I wouldve been worried that was an old carcass site they were rubbing in and would get defensive and aggressive. Grizzlies scare the sht outta me.

This stuff scares me as an Aussie. We have nothing similar to this at all. Crocs are much easier to avoid than grizzlies. And snakes are pussies. Same for spiders. Won’t mess with you if you don’t mess with them.

Grabbing the backpack by bending down was a really stupid move. These guys were very lucky the bears didn’t interpret that as a threat.

Just remember it is the bear's habitat, not humans. Don't take too much credit. Had they been hungry this video wouldn't have been made.

Glad to see you had bear spray ready in hand. I wonder if the bear had been sprayed previously and saw you coming closer with it, and made a hasty retreat. I hope I have it handy if ever needed.

You do realize by all accounts and classes you should have hit the spray soon as the bear crossed that dry patch.
