@@Noeysearles So we started off with just MWC and did skip some lessons since it was evident he’d mastered the concept at this level. We didn’t skip any lessons in Math Mammoth though. I just didn’t have him do all of the problems in each lesson. He was still able to finish MM level 1 by the end of the school year.
@@onecaffeinatedmom ok cool. We got halfway through MWC 1 last year, so we're going to pick that back up, but I've been wondering if we should do something else, because it isn't challenging my son at all. But there are aspects I like, so combining them sounds interesting. Lol Thank you!
@@Noeysearles You’re welcome! Yea, that’s one reason why I decided for my son to just go ahead and move him to MM for level 2. I think he’s getting a bit more of a challenge with it even though MWC is definitely comparable as far as topics covered.
@@Noeysearles If you're observing that it, could be the case! On that note, there is no harm in adding a bit of a challenge. With both my oldest boys, I noticed that they needed to have that bit of a challenge in their studies so they don't get bored with it. For them, boredom has equated to eventually putting in little effort lol I would say that now our math setup is rigorous enough for them. I haven't done a video on it yet, but we do Math Mammoth primarily and Beast Academy online 2-3 times a week (about 20 minute sessions) for an added challenge.
This was fun! My older girls use MM, and I do like it for them well. My little boys have used MWC, and I am not sure how we will move them forward in the future. Both such good curriculums!
Are the pages perforated for easy removal for the reader books and word and letter tiles? I am a busy mom of five soon six kids and I am so scared to teach my upcoming first grader to read. We were using All About Reading but it’s becoming too much for me with so many kids to keep up with so I am looking for something simpler.
How manageable do you think math with confidence is for 3 students for a first time mom homeschooler of a 3rd 1st and kindergartner? My kindergartner is supposed to go to first but they wanted to hold him back due to him not picking up on math as well as others. Kinda worried about it being a little too easy and if I could introduce level 1. Idk 🤦🏼♀️
We love Math with Confidence! My son just finished level 2 & we will be jumping into level 3!!! Super solid curriculum. Gathering suggested manipulates the night before really helps with the lesson flow!! ☺️
I agree! It’s definitely a solid curriculum and yes, that’s the one thing I always tell others about this curriculum, prepping the materials before hand is super helpful.
Kindred spirit! I too am most excited about teaching the arts to my kids. I am determined to give them the rich fine arts education that I wish I had received prior to college. ❤
Thank you so much!!! These are actually the two I’m debating between for next year (although a different grade), so it was awesome to see a comparison of the two curricula. I think we are going to go with Math Mammoth, as well, as my son just wants to do the work and be done, and gets annoyed if we have to play games before he can do the work lol. Thank you!
I definitely think that it’s important to note that Abeka’s workbooks are not meant to be used alone with out any instruction. Even at the 1-3 grade level. It’s is imperative to have the lesson plans that are very well laid out. If not using the lesson plan books then the video lessons are excellent. Too many time when I hear that Abeka just doesn’t teach the concepts clearly and it’s just memorization, I question if they are actually using the lesson plans or even watches the video lessons.
Yea, I think someone else mentioned that in another comment. No, I wasn’t using the teacher’s guide and videos. What it came down to is the fact that this was not the first spiral approach math curriculum we’d done. My son has done a lot better with a mastery approach. There were many other factors considered before making a switch: us living overseas, I would’ve needed to place another order for the videos and teacher book (international shipping is a pain) Budget: in addition to international shipping, Abeka was not the most budget friendly for us when calculating the cost of teacher book, videos, and student book Learning style Overall academic goal for math for this particular child, etc. I say all that to highlight that sometimes, even if you may not have purchased all the bells and whistles for a curriculum, you can still pinpoint what isn’t working for a child or your family. We decided to go with Math Mammoth and it turned out to be a great decision. While you may question how a curriculum is being implemented, which is a good question to ask, I think you also have to take into account other factors that may be involved in their decision to switch.
We love MWC but only used math mannoth’s blue series!!! Nothing wrong with abating the curriculum!!! I feel the MWC games are awesome for mental math especially when played often!!!
Hello everyone! I hope you found this to be helpful, especially since this is the time of year when a lot of homeschool parents start researching curriculum and solidifying choices for the upcoming school year.
Great review. As I'm looking through examples in the Daily Grams on the Easy Grammar website, I was wondering if the material in the Daily Gram is covered in the Easy Grammar text. It seems like the student needs to know a lot about verbs, nouns, pronouns, capitalization, contractions.... etc. in the Daily Gram examples. I understand all of these parts of speech, but if it's not been covered in the Easy Grammar book prior to the Daily Gram lesson page, how would a student know all that is asked of them in a Daily Gram? Does that question make sense?
Yep makes total sense! I do think in order to complete Daily Grams (at least independently) they’d need to have already been exposed to various topics in grammar. We started using this system in 3rd grade so I’m not sure what the grade books prior look like. I will say that the topics you see practiced in Daily Grams are covered throughout Easy Grammar eventually. What I have done is basically treat Daily Grams like an introduction to certain topics. I’ll explain the correct answer to a question but not go in depth until we reach that point in Easy Grammar.
It’s so nice to hear from you again! Do you plan to eventually transition your younger boys from MWC to Math Mammoth? If so, what grade would you make that transition? I have loved MM for my math minded 8 year old, however it is not going so well for my 6 year old first grader and I’m thinking about changing her over to MWC which would add manipulatives and games. I don’t want her to hate math, especially as a first grader! But I do love MM and now that I’ve done 3 levels I can see the progression and it is so SOLID! And it has been around to kind of stand the test of time versus MWC.
let me know how you use Real World Math. I just discovered it and want to use it too at random times. My son has asked when he gets a cell phone (when he is mature enough to be responsible) and I would love to show him how much it would cost and how it impacts income etc. Maybe have him plan a meal that he would eat when he leaves home for college or job and have him estimate food cost vs reality when he goes to the store and calculates? I do not even know if this is in the book I just saw the cover and hoped it has something like that.
We found math mannoth dry!!! He definitely needs a strong math foundation m!!! I make sure my daughter who is going into the medical field is strong in math!!! She fights me but then I tell her a heart surgeon needs strong math!!! We broke up language arts for my teens and I love it as they aren’t doing grammar unless I see they need it!!! I don’t question it with their writing assignments but I see that they have it down!!! We love MWC!!! I feel it gives a good foundation!!! I love to mix math curriculums when needed!!! We love memory work!!! My teenagers do it as well but I’ll make up memory statements of things I want them to learn!!! I bought a lot of crafts for us to do as a family and we’ve been loving it!!! My teenagers are doing the lord of the rings literature study by were’d you learn that!!! I agree with you on her literature studies!!! I love it when my kids can speak with native speakers!!! It sounds like your schedule is working for you!!!
😂 oh yes, Math Mammoth is absolutely dry, but it gets straight to the point, which seems to be the common preference with our boys. I agree that MWC gives a good foundation, which is why I am still keeping it as an option for my younger ones. Memory work has been really helpful! I do wish I had been more organized with it so we could be consistent with it sooner.
Is grade 2 of easy grammar structured differently? I got the easy grammar grade 2 teacher edition but it looks just like the daily grams you are showing here!
I enjoyed seeing what resources y’all are using. Just subscribed. We love the answers book. I’ve heard good things about generations science. I also have a channel mainly about homeschooling and it would be fun to be friends and connect here 😊
I just purchased this exact book for my 5year old. But still need to get the teacher edition for myself. I’m so excited to try this program I hear nothing but great things!
This was such a great review than you so much! Im really enjoying the authors podcasts recently and have been curious about the curriculum. Are yall still using this in any capacity?
This is my second year using the school nest planner and I really enjoy it! I am like you and I plan ahead and then go back to notate what all we got done
Very nice. Finished The Story of the Volume 1. Skipped volume 2, Did volume 3 in Mystery of History. In which I really like Mystery of History. Now were going back to volume 2 in one of them. Id like Mystery of History but you cant by the CD already recorded. You have a nice selection.
