The portraits changing by era was a great idea, but it had the drawback of making most rulers look out of place or indistinct in the modrrn era. I think they should have gone with a concept of your leader changing to a new one each era to reflect the flow of time and changes in leadership ... perhaps with some civs having multiple options for different eras
