These ceremonies seem weird to me until I remember going to Catholic mass as a child and eating those little wafers while pretending we were eating the body of Christ.

it's not healing, it's a blessing ritual, similar to sak-yant, as far as i understand. gold is the symbol of the blessing - golden leaves, golden mask, some videos even show monks inserting tiny pieces of gold under people's skin. as one commentator put it, "it's like having the blessing with you at all times" to the previous response - it's as much of a scam as eating a cookie for your holy communion.
