Amazing! The only thing that bugs me as someone coming from central europe are the manicured lawns. Less deep green empty lawns with grass, more bushes and flowers like we have here. Natural grass is the way to go!
I grew up in Tilburg and just found the Bicycle Dutch rides. The Tilburg rides used to be my stomping grounds and 50 years later it's a real joy to be able to do these rides at home. Can't tell you how much I enjoy them.
What amazes me every time I watch your videos from the Netherlands: Overall people have a much higher cadence, e.g. use easier gears. I wonder if the pedelec/e-bike boom will make this worse. In Germany, especially in Munich, people use much harder gears, then suffer fatigue and have to let it roll for some kind before starting again. Overall this results in more stiffness and hence riding shorter distance. It took me some years to learn 85-95rpm cadence in easier gears and now I'm almost every time the fastest non-sportive cyclists in town. It would be really a shame if electrified bikes with max support would cause to "unlearn" this skill.
Those are suggestion lines, they are there to make the road optically smaller for motorists to lower speed. These aren't bikepaths. Pardon, my comment^ was for the lines BEFORE that point. The lines after that point are there to signal where the side of the road is.
@@LeafHuntress Interesting. In Germany sidelines are continuous. We have dashed "bike protection lanes" (Schutzstreifen) but they are making everything worse and more dangerous as car drivers are allowed to ignore them and also illegally don't keep 1,5m distance when they pass.
@@LeafHuntress that's not what they're for, they're there to visually narrow the road, it doesn't add anything, just makes sure people don't drive too fast.
@@RolandRides we have the dashed bike lanes too where people drive 80 and above while overtaking you with barely any space. lots of accidents happen on those roads, I know multiple people who've died or got hit on those types of rural roads, sadly even The Netherlands still has a lot of work to do, not to mention the limited amount of land the municipality is allowed to use for the road.
I grew up in Tilburg and went to the Steffenberg (klein semenarie) in Haaren. Rode my bike along this way (then on the Bossche Baan) many times. Thanks for these videos.
Wow that route until you get to Den Bosch looks quite unpleasant, even if you have some dedicated space there's still so much loud traffic and too many roads with just painted suggestion bike lanes
Yes it is :) It is the home of the "New Kids", a popular show in both NL and Germany. Joost Klein also made a reference to this show in his song Europapa.
That transition at 0:44 from a fietsstrook to fiestpad by merging away from the road, then crossing the road at a more acute angle is wonderful. It explains to me how I can make this work here in the US. Thank you!
It's really the best you can get with urban planning in America. I find it ironic that this isn't on the east or west coast. But somewhere in the rust belt.
Haha true the only bikeable areas in San Diego are the beach towns west of the 5 and downtown/east SD. I dont mind the ride up the PCH either with the various bike lanes built by each city in north county. Really want to stay for a month-long vacation in NL now.
hmmm interesting route seems you had to share many roads with car traffic. I don't love that but the cars were going slow no? Is there automated speed enforcement in the Netherlands?
Did you miss the modal filter at 12:40? This is the old road that can only be used by residents, for all others it is a dead end. The main current road runs parallel, a few hundred metres to the right of this old road.
There is no automated speed enforcement on roads like that. Those are typical smaller roads between villages and farms. They aren't ideal and I must say they do feel a bit dangerous especially at night. But the idea on how to slow down cars is basically to 'narrow' the road by having large trees very close to them as well as the two lines on the side also visually narrowing the road, which makes driving fast feel more dangerous. Honestly not a huge fan of those type of roads, I suspect the only reason they are somewhat safe is because they are usually very calm as well as drivers here being used to bikers, I personally do not like them because you completely have to trust a 60km/h (speed of those roads) car to both pay attention as well as respect you and go out of the way for you.
I guess people are impressed because they do not understand the difference between hobby vs culture. In the Netherlands cycling is part of the culture.
A problem with one of those roundabouts that isn’t, shown early in the video, is that the navigation, Apple Maps and Google still refer to it as roundabout. Without paying attention to the road signs a major mistake can happen. Last time I was there was April so maybe it changed since then.
As an american, watching this video is like peering into a magical box of dreams. Our streets are so packed full of cars and overly wide, it feels so alien to be outside a car.
Wow, as a European that lived in America for a year, this city looks like the fusion of a European and American city i always dreamed of. Hats off to them, amazing!
