Thank you so much, you have given me a lot to think about AND to try out. I like your minimal approach and what you said about developing one's own personal esthetic rather than being too overwhelmed by other artists - something I am definitely guilty of.
Enjoy your trip when I travel I have a small sketchpad and pencil with me and when I see something of interest I sketch it in pencil and later on I'll redraw it and add what colour I want
its good to have time to rest and plan next adventures. i've been so impressed on how you were posting so much content before, traveling, painting and editing videos. So much work :) It must felt very nice to feel appreciated to teach in art school for some time. Have fun!
Looking forward to seeing your next post. I’ve been checking in frequently to see if you’ve provided any content… you’ve been missed! Hope the exhibition has gone well for you 😀
I was starting to worry about you two. Glad to hear you are okay and doing lots of fun things. I look forward to seeing more of your videos when you find time to do them. Good luck with your oil painting class. Please consider coming to Arizona to conduct a watercolor class. 😊
Good to hear from you James. Hope your exhibition is going well. Looking forward to your painting tutorials and the next episode of “travels with Tanya and James!” Noël in wintry Ballarat.
I love your technique with watercolors! Can I ask what palette/tin you’re using? It looks ideal. Thank you so much for your video and showing your process!
Hi Marianne, I’m really glad you enjoyed the video and the techniques. The pallet I use is from the little brass box company. I have done a video on it about a year ago so you can have a look at that and find out all about it. Best wishes, James
Hi, I’m so pleased you’ve enjoyed the techniques. I do find it a fun way to paint. I’ve done a few videos on Portrait painting so have a look at those, I hope you enjoy Best wishes, James
@JamesPotterAboutArt I am only a beginner . I always wanted to learn waterpainting when I retired. And I'm loving it , so I was painting some gum leaves the other day using your technique ,wow ,they turned out so lovely. Took a photo of a waratah in flower , and playing with that at the moment
@@ahairysituation121 That’s really great. I’m so pleased!! Watercolour is such a wonderful medium. It’s very difficult at times, but when you make a breakthrough and improve, it’s incredibly exciting. Keep going. Best wishes, James
Hi Mimi, It’s a really beautiful Palette and one of my best investments that I’ve made in Watercolour painting. It’s made by a company called the little brass box Company. I have done a video all about it So hopefully you can find it. I think it was about a year ago that I made it. I hope you enjoy it. Best wishes, James
Glad you enjoyed that and that you’re going to give it a go. It’s a really good experiment and it does make you realise that colour isn’t everything. Have fun. Best wishes, James
Hi Mairi, Glad you enjoyed walking around Edinburgh. You’re right, it’s definitely Princes Street Gardens! I do have a tendency of shortening things to make things easier to say. Best wishes, James
Hi Barry, That’s great that you’ve got something from the video. It’s really important to be free with Watercolour. Like with most things in life when you’re trying too hard, it doesn’t go well. Best wishes, James
when i need something therapeutic, and like to see beautiful scenics (my homeland is a busy city! ), your touring videos are my go to! I love that you talk through your adventure;I find I learn a little more everytime 👏
That’s really great! I’m so pleased that you enjoy our journeys. We’ve had a little break recently, but we will get back to it soon. Best wishes, James
James: I'm missing your wonderful videos and lessons! I hope you are on a wonderful holiday? looking forward to more of your travel adventures and paintings.
Hi Robin, Sorry to be absent for so long! We’ve had lots going on and it’s made it a bit tricky to go on our trips, but don’t worry we will be back in our campervan soon. Best wishes, James
So so beautiful! Maybe you can do a video where you show and explain us how to paint these portraits How do you measure when you do your scetch? And how do you decide which colors you use for all the different parts? That would be awesome! ✨ Thanks for your inspiration!
Hi Marleen , Glad you enjoyed the Portrait. If you go to my RU-vid channel, you can see the full version of this Portrait. Where I try and explain everything. There’s also some other Portraits there as well. I hope you enjoy them. Best wishes, James
Hi Ritzi, Glad you like me chatting. I really enjoy trying to articulate what I’m doing, sometimes it’s difficult to put it into words but I do my best. Best wishes, James
Hi, That’s really great! Being more relaxed in your painting is so important. It’s difficult to do anything if you’re uptight and worried. Hope it goes well. Best wishes, James
Wow! I am loving this. Your explanation of the "knife edge" nails it....that is exactly my goal. Every now and then, things come together. Very serendipitous! I would LOVE you to do some portrait videos....I am just now coming to the point of wanting to learn how to get started with that. so glad I came across your site!
Hi again, For me, the knife edge idea is a very important one. It Gives you an overall view of what you’re trying to attempt, which is so vital. If you don’t know where you’re going, how can you get there? I have done a few Portraits so hopefully you can have a look at those. Best wishes, James
Very much enjoyed this. I will start with apples as soon as I get home. My greatest struggle is water/paint ratio, and timing. Watercolor requires patience…not always easy when I want to get on with it! Thanks.
Hi Ritzie, That’s really great that you enjoyed the video and that you’re going to give the apples a go. Timing is an important part of Watercolour. Best wishes, James
Hello James, I hope everything is alright as I haven't seen a new video coming out recently. What a great Idea you shared when the paper runs out! Is Scotland always so windy? Looking forward to new videos coming out. Take care!
Hi Anna, Everything is all fine here, thanks! Just lots going on. I will be back and get back into regular posting. Thanks for your concern. Best wishes, James
@@JamesPotterAboutArt Hello and thank you for your reply! I'm glad to hear all is good with you, that's the most important thing. Looking forward to watching you again! Best all.🤗
That’s so funny. The traffic system is the worst part Edinburgh! From a Painters and visual point of view it is amazing, there is a lot of beauty in the city and I like the hills around and in the city, but the weather is terrible!
Hi Alan, I’m sure I could pop along at sometime. I have joined the Edinburgh Urban sketches Facebook account. So maybe we’ll meet up at some point. I’m actually planning to do a project on painting Edinburgh soon, so you might also see me around town. Best wishes, James
I look forward to seeing you around ,I also do Watercolour ,and really enjoying your videos ,Regarding Urban sketchers we meeting various locations ,The Botanics , National ,museum ,also various cafes ,,for people watching and sketching ,
Hi, Glad you enjoyed the flowers. I think impressionist flower painting is by far the most interesting way to paint them. I enjoy the interpretation of the flower rather than just copying it. I hope it helps your painting. Best wishes, James
Hi Jay, That’s really great. I’m glad you’ve got something good from the video. I think you’re right it is much more fun painting and mixing in this way, which is why we paint anyway. Keep painting Best wishes, James
Thank you so much. I’m retired and starting to learn something new. I’ve been watching watercolour painting videos for beginners. Your sharing is very inspiring and has given me the green light and direction. Thank you very much.
Hi Kenny. That’s really great that you’ve enjoyed the video and got something from it. I think Watercolour painting is perfect for when you retire. It’s very challenging at times, The benefits are so worthwhile with a feeling of great satisfaction when it goes well. Keep going! Best wishes, James
Just wanted to say how much I have enjoyed all your videos which have movitated me to try and start painting. Its been a struggle to get started but i will get there. Please keep sharing your paonting. Hope you and your family are well and enjoying the summer in Scotland. Cheeers
Thanks, Steve Glad you’ve enjoyed the videos. Sometimes it is difficult to start, but I tend to think it’s because we put too much value in the painting and it makes it off putting. Try not to make it so important and just start. Best wishes, James
Very inspirational, I personally love line and wash, I was born with an artistic talent, but I don't see that personally had a bad abusive life . For some reason Art takes me to peace again. Which I love. I have awards for other things. That I feel gelousy came in the way. Now I'm back to Art I feel like it's too hard but easy. If that makes sense lol. I appreciate your work and think your demonstration is amazing for beginners. ❤
Hi Heather, Glad you’re enjoying the videos. It’s an interesting point about finding art hard and easy. There is a lot of tension in painting and I think that it’s that that makes it hard. I hope you keep on going with your painting. Best wishes, James
@JamesPotterAboutArt Thank-you very much James. Yes watercolour is a tricky medium, if you are just learning . I was always sketching, but I find the more I practice the better the results, although not always. I did a throw paint on wet in wet and let it run , and just guiding the paint etc for a forest scene amazing to do, and turned out I liked it. But your inspiration is so helping others. Thankyou 😃
Hi, Glad you enjoyed the video and that you’ve come to the realisation that you shouldn’t over makes your colours! As you’ve noticed the colours are much more interesting this way Good luck with your painting. Best wishes, James
