It seems the development section is the subjects of this sonata just in different harmonies (different scales/tonal centers), I wonder why that is such a "development"... As in, why is that such a big event? I like it personally, that it changes harmonies. But why is that enough for a development section? Isn't it trivial, that if we repeat the subject we should do so in different harmonies in the development? I am not seeking a historical reason, I am seeking a musical one, to me a good piece is good regardless of its history. If someone could help me understand it will be much appreciated!!
I cannot really understand the didatic in this video, as you did not demonstrate, you just say and suppose the student to be aware of what you are seeying. It would be better to put more few seconds explaining what happenned in each step of your thought and also to repeat to one way amd other, side by side, as if you interpose your explanation bettween two sound, it becomes impossible to understand the difference. The use of U P8 and P5 is also bad as didatic, I could not understand instantaniously. I could not understand also why F to C is 12th, 12th what? semitones? degrees? And, its not clear why octaves, unissons ans fifths are to be avoided
Sorry for the trouble. These videos were designed to accompany a course at New England Conservatory and are intended as review for students enrolled in the course. They are not intended to cover the material from scratch. If you're interested in a video series of that kind, I invite you to check out Alan Belkin's channel which includes an entire course on tonal harmony. That said, some of the concepts you're asking about are explained in the previous video of this series.
Thanks! This video was created long time ago when I was still an undergrad (I believe), but I have a doctorate in music now. I appreciate your support!
I like to think of them more as principles to keep in mind. You might treat them as rules at first, but with experience you will come to see them more as flexible voice-leading strategies.
This is seriously the most under algorithm channel on RU-vid. I am going to watch all these videos. I have a lot of music friends who I am going to share this with!
Thank you for these informative videos that are so well made and a lot better than other I have watched. I'm trying to review these topics for my Berklee Tonal Harmony 1 class that I'm willing to test out of. Very good work, maestro!
Never mind...can't find the messaging function (maybe they removed it). In any case, I love your animations. It could be fun to collaborate. I'm a composer and would love to write music to a short animation, even something simple.
