That’s so cool! Correct me if I’m wrong, but they started one engine at the stand, switched off the APU... and then after push back did a cross bleed start and thus had to provide a little bit of thrust with the engine that was already started. That’s really rare, very cool that you got to experience that.
Hey there! As you have noticed they started one engine while still at the stand and not while pushing; this was probably due to the APU being INOP therefore a stationary ASU (Air Start Unit) was used from the ground to provide air pressure in order to start one of the engines. With one engine running AC electrical power was then available which allowed for the GPU (Ground Power Unit) to be disconnected and the push back was possible. Lastly as you have stated in order to start the other engine a cross bleed start had to be performed using bleed air from the running engine however with that engine being idle it did not provide sufficient air pressure to start the other, this was simply rectified by increasing the thrust which then increased the engine bleed air pressure to the necessary PSI. Aircraft are allowed to operate with the APU being inoperative if necessary, in such cases ASU is the saviour. As you can see this was quite a long procedure. If the APU was working both engines would be started as normal as time is of the essence in the industry and only wasted when there is simply no other choice. Regards and nicely spotted!
@@pirek97 The GPU is a Generator that provides electrical power when on the ground. Reasons to use a GPU ( common once) : - Start the APU - Power down the Airplane ( Engines and APU switched off) - Charge batteries - if the APU is not Available ( Emergency power supply). Note - Airplanes like the Boeing 777 have : - Air Turbine Starter ( high pressure air used to spin the APU to Max Motoring speed ) - Electric Starter Motor. In this case the APU Battery will power: - APU starter Motor ( Electric) and all other components to start and monitor its operations.
Indeed however I'm not sure the airplanes share the same opinion haha. A new runway is being built and the new terminal should be fully functional some time literally changing the whole airport to a brand new one.
